a Jane Austen dating show? The Courtship

- I'm fairly certain I applied to be on this show last year. A few of you have been asking for my opinions on the Courtship. NBC has a new Bridgerton inspired dating show set in regency-era England. I'm kind of obsessed, but not with what they want me obsessed with. Let's talk about The Courtship.
I made it into the second round of voting to be on a reality tv show! scroll down to the bottom of the page to vote here!: cf-ci-mon-cac1...

Cologne guy’s letter is absolutely how they would flirt back in regency era. “Come find me at the ball” is totally a romance novel setup
Cologne guy did his freaking homework and I'm here for it
I didn’t even watch it but from the description alone Amanda made me root for cologne guy.
The dude is genre-savvy and I'm here for it
that was such a sexy move honestly
I don't think you'd be boring, but more importantly, I think the production would be smart to cast you and play a little montage of you reviewing these shows on yt. They could play it off like 'she talks about knowing how to play the game...but can she do it when she's IN it?' *cue dramatic music* lol it'd be so fun.
I would be so invested in that show!
Mr Beast should do this if the networks won't do it
*grabs popcorn* Tell me more! 🤣
I want them to put her in costumes. Swell gorgeous girl be our dress up doll.
Yea. I think them saying that would be really good. I think she'd be a fan favourite. She's naturally likeable.
This is LARPing. LARPing on national television. I love it
For some reason when Amanda said she applied to be on the show I couldn't help picturing her in a suit with the male contestants and awkwardly competing for the "heroine's" hand.
I'd watch it
I need it
Is anyone else really bothered that they had the lead wear modern dresses?? Like give us regency ball gowns come on now
Yes first thing i noticed and i hate it.
I def get that but some of her dresses were sooo cute. So personally, I forgave them. It was like regency inspired, but def not in any way regency lol
I'm getting live action beauty and the beast flashbacks!!!
YEEEEEES!!!! Personally, I can't wait to see the TH-cam Historical Council gathering again to talk about this show (Abby Cox, Bernadette Banner, Karoline Zebrowska, and the gang) like they did about that video about corsets.
I’m pretty sure looking at all of the costumes the budget was mostly spent on the venue
they…they had the budget to give everyone a bespoke regency wardrobe…and they went with polyester cravats and Macy’s empire waist prom dresses?
Exactly what I thought
How how can you see it's polyester?
@@nekonyx The way the fabric moves, folds, and most importantly how it reflects the light. There’s a sheen that’s too grainy to be silk and too shiny to be organic fiber.
..the budget was spent paying for an entire casts wardrobe??
Are you sure they really did have the budjet? Or sure, maybe the production company would have had money, but did not allocate that much to the clothes. And it makes sense to me that they would not see it as a worthy investment. The target audience of the show isn’t history / historical dress enthusiasts, it’s people that are into reality tv (and maybe watched Bridgerton on Netflix which is like the second most watched show on there or something?). Also made-to-measure clothing would take a longer time to do and they probably wanted to crank out the show as quickly as possible. Idk what material regency dresses would actually be made of but I personally feel making custom dresses out of silk or wool for a silly show like this would simply have been a waste.
Amanda: says the men being from LA is a red flag.
Also Amanda: is from LA, an aspiring actor, and also applied for the show 🚩🚩🚩
I would just like to point out that the woman's dresses need to pick a fucking ERA. I sent the trailer to my Costume Designer friends and they were upset lmao
I am weeping on my chaise lounge right now lol I just want a little bit of historical influence and continuity 😭😭
costume grad here - that red dress is going to *haunt* me
the glitter stars in her hair…broke me
Pretend it’s an asynchronous romantic fantasy novel rather than a true period piece
I took it as them going for more of a vibe than true historical accuracy. It’s not PBS
I think a dating show like this is visibly needed for black women. Black women historically were never allowed to “rest in their feminine” because of our traumatic and tumultuous identity with traditional femininity and social economical class that was never built for us to succeed in. This show is revolutionary because we never seen a FULL BLACK WOMAN who is DARKSKINNED being the center of attention and treated as a desirable love interest. She isn’t treated as a mammy or a man, she simply exists and is enjoying the luxuries of life black women are now able to have in our modern era. 💅🏽✨💖
Yes oh my gosh, I never heard of this show, I’m going to watch it as soon as I’m done with this video 💕🌸💘💖
Let the fros flow
I dont know if TH-cam knew this was the first thing I would look for in the comments and put it at the top but I would like it to stay that way please
You are joking, right? Your "traumatic identity"? God, get over yourself. Meanwhile, in Africa. Real Trauma happening to your own woemn, like having their clitoris sawn off by BLACK n, and you're herein America with other black women moaning over non existent racism from the cashier at Target
@@chance2413 wtf, first she was literally speaking within a historical context, second, just because there is trauma elsewhere does not mean there is not trauma here, today, in the US, as a result of that historical context. Just be open to and listen to others' experiences, no need to shit in anyone's cocoa puffs when people are celebrating a momentous cultural shift.
I always said I would never go on a dating show but I would totally go as the best friend to lead. That would have all the fun with none of the drama centered on me.
I appreciate seeing a woman of color in that role😊
Hearing how bad amandas dad would be if he was on this show makes me even more interested in what would happen if she really was on this show lol
Edit: Petition to pester the producers of this show until amanda get on!
Yeah, this show could get really messy if the male contestants start fawning over the main girl's family members (like a sister) and or friends. Especially if the main girl has the strongest feelings for a guy who is interested in someone else. But hey, those are ratings right there, so I guess from a business standpoint it's brilliant.
And it seems like the sort of conflict that would happen in these kinds of regency novels or movies, so it wouldn't be entirely out of the setting, I guess
Yeah! It's a reality show! That's the mess we want lol
Season 2 of Bridgerton was literally about the guy having feelings for the sister of the girl he was courting. That's EXACTLY the demographic for this reality show.
It happened lmfao
Isn’t that the most recent bridgerton seasons plot? Kinda works for this setting
I hate dating shows but I would unironically watch any that Amanda was on. I know it would be fire!
I feel like she would fully Internet sleuth to become the audience stand out
my favorite part is that the costumes are on a similar level of historical accuracy as bridgerton itself. plastic rhinestones on that red farewell dance dress? we love to see it.
edit: not to mention the glittery silver stars in her hair in that scene. incredible.
No accuracy, just vibes
And I'm here for it
(Also the drama and tension can distract you from the garments real fast)
When you got to the part about the doctor trying to give the rose quartz ring and your description of what he said of the ring and her rejection of it, his reaction face made me laugh out so hard. It was a nice gesture but so pathetic at the same time.
Yess it made me cringe so hard
And the fact he said “I think your wrong”😂 like dude get the message she doesn’t like you
I was giving him the benefit of the doubt that he might just be very socially awkward (I’m autistic so I get it lmao) but when he said “I think you’re making a big mistake” WOA dude big red flags, dodged a bullet there
I loved seeing a woman of color on the show and she's so pretty too, the pink and girly colors looked gorgeous up against her skin tone. As a black woman, it's so relatable and I can finally see myself in a dateing show.💁🏽♀️💗💗💗
10:42 the shirtless guy in the pond straight from the BBC Pride and Prejudice mini series. They definitely know their audience.
I would be a terrible lead to this, because l would 100% keep mentioning the fact that l am dressed in high waisted prom dresses instead of regency dresses.
jane's not rolling in her grave, she's tumbling and taking us all for the ride
Seymour?
@@marielcarey4288 Austen, actually
@@simplykathrynrebeca oh,
@@marielcarey4288 if you haven’t read any of her books, I would recommend Pride and Prejudice or Emma they are my favorites 😩❤️
@@simplykathrynrebeca what are they about?
I normally really don't like dating shows but this show looks cute as hell. I think having the family there and involved makes it feel a lot more wholesome
Get someone like Bernadette Banner or Abby Cox involved in the show; they'll bring their own wardrobe to the scene. 😄
That would be so iconic
God, if Abby Cox weren't married I'd love to see her on a reality show. She would be so entertaining!
I’d love to see this premise used with 2-3 eligible women and their families along with the slew of eligible bachelors. Seeing the families all trying to make the perfect matches for their daughter/sister/friend and the men having to be respectful to all of the families while vying for the heart of the woman they yearn for above all of the other women? Messy! And I love messy!
I think the fact that the parents, siblings, and close friends are involved with the process is a great idea. Of course this doesn’t apply for all families, but having loved ones vet your suiters as well I think is good for rooting out the ones “there for the wrong reasons.” Or maybe even shine a light on a good guy who may not be as attention grabbing as the others. At the very least, adds a whole new angle to the show that makes for interesting tv
Daniel Bochicchio (guy who invited her on the boat) was a contestant on America's Next Top Model... not saying he isn't looking for love but I'm always suspicious of people who go on more than one reality show.
Why are Remy's dresses not historically accurate like the others'? It's mildly annoying
Lol unfortunately none of them are accurate outside of the silhouette, which is subpar at best
I think this show was going for "Reign" type historical accuracy😂😂
@@lucasmcinnis5045 yeah that's what I meant, but with Remy they didn't even remotely try
@@kaylajaispells3570 yeah probably 💀 but even in the Reign the theme was somewhat cohesive. Here they kind of like, gave Remy some prom dresses
@@lucasmcinnis5045 nobody expected a historical re-enactment here, but they managed to pull regency era halloween costumes for her family and friend, so why did they put her in clearly modern gowns?
I feel like day 1 crying gets a pass when you meet the parents and friends too, that probably makes the small interactions seem more meaningful
That dress is really pretty!! Also agree w the comments about featuring black and women of colour on dating shows (especially ones like these where they're opting for ballroom era stuff! Those time-periods tend to get nothing but white depictions, when there's more to it than that.).
So,what do they suppose to do portray her as a maid or a slave?
@@lisah8438 you clearly didn’t read this properly huh?
@@Oujibug Then clarify guess.
@@lisah8438 I think she means it’s nice to have something outside of that. These shows aren’t historically accurate anyway, so why not have a black woman be the lead? Bridgerton did it with a black man (I won’t comment on the success, not my place) but white women get to see themselves in that fantasy all the time, so why not let other women too
It's not regency at all, it is Bridgerton lol Look at those tacky fabrics, no one in the actual Regency wore that. Beautiful though! I'm so excited to watch another garbage dating show. Love is Blind left me lonely!
edit: oh god, her dresses are so modern! This is why they are just dressing a few women! They did a surprisingly decent job with the men's costumes!
The Bridgerton look: its like Regency era fashion, but from Target!
barring the super extra setting of the show, i do like the idea of courting family and friends. cause i mean if something does come from the relationship they gotta interact with them too.
More dating shows should have the best friends involved cuz they usually have the most interesting opinions
I THINK AMANDA WILL ENJOY AN FILIPINO DATING SHOW.
Imagine the old style of filipino courting where the suitors will have to please the parents by chopping wood, fetching buckets of water, and maybe who will have the best harana 😅
I think a pamamanhikan will work too
I wish I could do it just for the period style clothing.
SAME ‼️‼️
When you mentioned having a Jane Austen fanatic as the lead- there's this indie movie called Austenland that's basically this reality tv show with that, and minus the familial involvement.
OH MY GOD 😳 the one with Jen Coolidge?! I loved that movieeee
I was struggling to remember the name of this movie. Thank you!
@@marcgrafgregorio8751 yes omg, my mom's made me watch it a billion times. It's all I was thinking about during this video
It’s based off of the book Austenland by Shannon Hale! Such a fun read and there’s a sequel with more mysterious undertones.
omg other people know that movie exists??? I loved that movie. It was so weird and quirky.
I have never seen the show this is based off of, so the entire time I’m just thinking ‘oh, god, they finally made the adaptation of the Selection”
31:30 That episode killed it for my son (20 years old). He said what’s the point for the other suitors to continue pursuing her if she’s sleeping with someone? He was serious about that. Had to convince him to continue to watch until the end. 😂
I feel like that honestly depends on him. If he's a hypocrite and thinks he should be allowed to sleep with multiple women, then that's a bit ehhhh... but if he also wants to stay celibate until idk things are more official, I say more the power to him. Idk, just my 2 cents as an outsider.
I saw the application for a "Regency style dating show", and almost applied. Then i realized they didn't want a Jane Austen fanatic who would quiz them on Jane Austen stuff, and follow regency values, so I didn't bother
Have we ever gotten a dating show where the lead is a bi-sexual woman?! That'd be interesting 👀
@@deadinside8781 Tila Tequila
Hulu pulled a fast one. Let me watch the first couple of episodes then said the rest require premium to view. Not worth it. I’ll just watch your take. I’m good. :)
1. Love your shirt! It looks great on you
2. I’m liking this show. I too like that they started with only 16 guys vs. 30 for the Bachelorette
3. I feel like these guys are more genuine than most reality shows even though they didn’t know it was going to be Nicole at the beginning. I still need the singing guy and the British guy to be eliminated ASAP.
4. I think Nicole can do better than most of these guys. She’s just so top tiered
5. The guys who I think are at the top: Bochicchio (Italian first date guy), Chapman (pretty eyes guy), Cones (cologne guy)
6. There are 13 episodes in total so I do think we’ll get to really learn about these guys and Nicole more which I’m excited about.
7. I kind of wish the best friend wasn’t there. Wish it was more of a family thing.
Dating shows like these and others always put a man or woman on a pedestal as someone for other men, women, or both, to pursue and agonize over. this leads to an unhealthy mindset especially among women, that you have to earn someone's affection or compete for them like they're a prize. While this desperate mentality is sure not to affect everyone in real life, there are certain groups of men and women who will treat others as objects based on this silliness or attempt to attract attention from others just as a means of getting some status on their name; not a good basis for any relationships, platonic or romantic. Love is great, romance can be good, but tv dramas ain't love and romance is on sick-leave.
No ones gonna talk about how Amanda looks fucking great in that dress💅🏿
RIGHT?
Okay, I knew the fabrics would be Bridgerton-style inaccurate and I’m fine with that, but this era was all about the silhouettes, so WHY did they not give the lead a regency silhouette? All the men and the sisters did as far as I could tell, but the lead should have had some beautiful empire waist dresses and she just didn’t!
Swell looking fly as hell today, stay fresh big homie.
This comment is a riot thank you
I rarely watch reality TV, but I love watching you be so incredibly enthusiastic over it.
You're wonderful!
We need another video about this show asap!!!! I was so interested and it’s the first time I’m considering watching a dating show, it sounds so interesting to see the family in there too - also I’ve just watched bridgerton so I’m in the “British bullshit court” mood
On the topic of the color pink, I think you would look really really good in like, one of those dark green velvet dresses. Like the one the mom in brave wears
As someone who studies history with a special interest in fashion, the costumes fuel my anger! Pick👏a👏decade 👏and👏era
Ok I kinda want more time period themed dating shows. Like can we have one for literally every decade? And I’m not even into dating shows.
i love your breakdowns of dating shows. you would be amazing in a meta dating show where ppl compete for your affection but they know you're well versed in how things work and so the game element is elevated like crazy.
Girl trademark this
I don't watch dating shows, but I live for watching you describe them.
i'm currently working on a pompom kirby, and just hearing you say 'baby pink isn't my colour' while cutting and trimming a pastel pink pompom is amazing
Why is Ms. Remy the one in meh prom dresses completely not in the era of -everyone else- though?
You saying "if you are a doctor I consider you a real adult" just cemented that career decision in my mind
I just need people to now about the movie Austenland! Ladies pay to go on a Pride and Prejudice role play holiday, including interesting men with different incentives 😉
During the quarantine period before filming all the men got dancing, penmanship, manners and like general regency lessons. That’s how they know the dances.
Also Hulu probably changed the permissions cause the show got moved from NBC to USA not a great sign for its future
Please do the rest of the show you've done a great job of love to hear the rest
I am kinda confused on Nicole’s dress. I don’t know anything about this time period, but that red dress doesn’t seem like it fits. Can someone tell me if I’m wrong or not?
Yeah, it's completely modern. The girls' outfits are way worse than the guys' outfits, esp. In terms of historical accuracy
I love that I have never watched any dating shows but I know about so many of them through your channel. Lol..
This show has never been done before? I beg to differ! Regency House Party was EXACTLY a Regency dating show, except with full on chaperones and historically accurate everything. It was narrated by The Scarlet Pimpernel and I have seen it too many times.
It's hard to find but do it.
Okay, I’ve read this fanfiction before. One of the guys needs to secretly fall for her sister and reveal it in a dramatic way or I’m walking
Well the sister is married but there was one guy that was interested in her friend.
Close enough, surfer dude tries to link up with her friend.
Honest to god haven’t been this excited for a reality show in such a long time
I know one of the people who was hired to make the men's waistcoats (and possibly trousers I can't remember) and they got given the bear bones information and never got to fit them, so it was a genuine surprise they worked out that well.
DRESS PORN! Never heard that one and made me laugh. Love your entusiam. Great video
Just from seeing a commercial for "The Courtship", I knew it was going to be featured on Swell Entertainment.
I definitely heard "rowed Ms. Remy" as "rode Ms. Remy," and thought I missed a huge plot point.
😂 yeah very much a « whoa hang on when did we rear off here! »moment.
I just find it cute that you think all dads are talkative and fun like daddyswell, i can relate to Ms. Remy's dad too well, my grandpapa dont speak that much either
Dude, I cried hearing the story about the guy’s family second hand from you! That’s heartbreaking!
I love your dynamic with William lol, always so fun to see
The captain is a military designation because he was in the Korean military I believe
Loving romance novel Amanda! I want a shirt like that now
I also watched the first two episodes recently and really enjoyed the show! Ms. Rémy is a great lead so far. As you said, it’s in part because she seems to know what she wants and she’s able to be direct with the guys about that. The period setting makes for a fun backdrop though it is jarring to then hear some of the guys mention TikTok haha. I absolutely love that the family is there with her. It’s like Parental Control meets The Bachelor meets Pride and Prejudice and I love that as a concept.
The final dances are so funny, especially when she picked someone (Cologne guy?) and said oh you were never in any danger I just wanted to have this time and be close to you. The farewell does sound very final.
I also cannot tell a lot of the guys apart. And one thing that’s really bothersome is that we’re only introduced to the guys by their surnames but then they all refer to each other with first names and I’m like whotf is Dan?!
You say Swell daddy would be a nightmare on a show like this, but that’s also where the drama comes from no? I think you would have more fun as the lead than as one of the suitors.
Lol just because he has a Dr title doesn't make him a mature adult. I'm currently doing a PhD program and I'm a fucking degenerate
This gives me hope. Do you enjoy the program overall?
@@bunnyfrosting1744 yeah it's great. Not an MD so they'll never let me near a patient but that's fine by me
You made me chuckle
I would argue that just makes you relatable. Doctors tend to have this air of elitism around them so honestly degeneracy is such a breath of fresh air y'know? Like omg he's weird just like the rest of us.
I don't know who you are, but you're fascinating. Not sure why your channel was suggested but my guess is because I'm subbed to Karolina Żebrowska and I like The Amazing Race. Belated congratulations on a quarter million. Subbed.
I was waiting for someone to talk about this show! I had a feeling it would be you swell. We can't escape everyone talking about "Love is Blind" and here we all are sleeping on "The Courtship". I am HERE for it.
i used to like amanda’s content but now i love it because somehow she manages to make a video about every trashy reality show i consume
Original content. Good Analysis. Delivered entertainingly.
Please please please do a full long af breakdown of this full show (multi-part if necessary). I caught the season finale of this show tonight waiting to watch the sf of Temptation and the first thing I thought was 'I hope she does a good video on this
btw, Temptation Island is my favorite reality dating sow, maybe because as a female in the marines it is incredibly relatable, but also this is my favorite season of Temptation Island (4) if you want to take a deeper dive into this show. Especially with the videos the season one girls made recently
Nicole and her sister are so gorgeous, can we talk about that? They could be actresses, and they are both so charismatic, my eyes kept focusing solely on them lol
I've been binging a podcast called Noble Blood (which is very good btw) during work this week and I've probably heard over forty ads for the Courtship. The narration echoes in my sleep and haunts my waking moments. I am glad that the show seems promising, or at least entertaining! I've never really had a chance to get into reality dating shows but I can't get enough of watching reviews and reaction videos anyway. The lead and her family seem really wonderful, so I'd be interested if this is a series you plan to continue!
I need my bestie to get on this show so I can be the BFF who grills all these men on why they should be allowed to court her like an overprotective mother 😂
Also! Girl, I get the whole "pink doesn't work for me" thing! I LOVE cottagecore style and fashion inspired by history, but it feels like 89% of it is in pastels, and I can't pull off pastels!! They just look terrible on me 😭 guess I'll have to make my own lol
I really want to watch this because you made it sound so good
Wasn't there already a reality tv show in this style? Based in the colony period in Chile. (It aired in Chile, obviously)
I mean, it also was an historical theme reality show. The contestants instead of going for a female lead had to compete in teams and each episode the wining team got to live like the aristocrats and the losers had to be the peasant. (1810)
Sounds like the only dating show I would actually watch. But I still want one with a bi/pan lead and a gender spectrum of suitors.
Your remarks about Hulu almost made for a perfect into to a VPN add.
Aside, your analyses of dating shows are great, I'd like to see you create one even more than appear on one.
""There's going to be a bubble pop and it's going to be EXPLOSIVE""..."So you save that for later", I'm almost an adult but I WEEZED 💀
I've only seen the pilot but I got so excited when I saw that Mr. Hunter got a solo date. He is my favorite of all the suitors. The singing guy KILLED ME no one I know watches it and my family is sick of hearing about it but I am into it. It got moved from NBC to USA and on a different night so I don't know how much I'll be able to see now.
please never stop talking about obscure random dating shows ily
I would die for a dating show with you as the LEAD! seriously, it would have to be a show with you as the lead because I don't think it would work otherwise - at least not to my hearts content. There would just not be enough time for viewers to really fall for you AND the lead is creating the baseline of what the show is about. after all we love to hear you talk
Mr. Collin’s material that Doctor is.
amanda looks so good in this look!
I don’t normally watch these but this one I’m looking for!! This one I can get behind!!
My family choosing a partner for me sounds like absolute hell
I think you should read The Charm Offensive! It’s a really sweet kinda trashy romcom about a producer on a show very similar to this who fully believes he helps them find love and the lead who is just doing it as like a publicity stunt. And they fall in love 🙂 obviously
Watching your old videos 🙃 anyway, would love to see reactions to the stories you could tell in the context of the kind of people that usually get on dating shows, oh what do you do for work, etc
im gonna need video updates of this show cuz i'm invested in your commentary dfgfdgdfg
this was so fun to watch u explain everything so well!
Oh my Nicole is so so beautiful 🥰
Love to see her as leading lady 🤍
I don’t usually like dating shoes but the family being there the costumes and I love how diverse the cast is!
Look. I've just binged season 2 of Bridgerton and a show like that and this video about it is EXACTLY what I need. I hope you can watch the rest of it and talk about it here on the channel, and I immediately want this show to be renewed for a second, third and fourth season.
I had to pause and cackle bc I said "heaving bosom" out loud at the very same moment you did hdjsshhshshs
This show seems amazing. I would so love to be part of it, the way the friend and sister are. Standing by, judging and just enjoying the ride xD
