Just got these bars today. Super easy install and they look amazing. Easily a one man job. Trickiest part was removing the caps on the stock rails to remove the OEM crossbars. The bars are such a huge visual and utility upgrade over stock and significantly less cost than a full rack. Perfect for those of us who don’t use our 4Runners as dedicated overland builds.
Nice video extremely helpful. Thank you. Additional tips, get two ladders. One for each side of the truck, Get two towels, one for each side of the truck. Watch video on pulling end caps of on youtube...be very careful.....don't tighten down the front to much until the others are placed. thread your nuts before install to where you can slide them in snug on install. Drivers side bolts turn towards front of truck. Passenger sides to the back. Pull your towels out before locking down front. If you have front wing fairing piece, put on the protective strip first. ( I actually cut about 2" of mine) Took me a little longer than 41 minutes but pretty simple modification.
They look great, especially with your painted side rails. They look like they will be more useful then the factory cross bars. I like how you purchased the cross bars first and assessed them versus purchasing the side rails and cross bars..
what have you mounted on the crossbars? you wouldnt happen to have a video would you? Im still trying to figure out how to slip in the TNuts underneath the channels, where there are no slots for them to sit on.
Hey I know this vid is a bit old but hopefully you can answer (apologies if the answer is somewhere buried in the 257 comments too 😅) BUT regarding the height of these bars, when mounted to the factory rails, do items clear the shark fin antennae? For instance, if you were to throw a piece of 4x8 plywood on the roof? Thx in advance!
I actually priced out piecing the rack together or just going with the complete 7/8 rack, and it's less expensive to go with the complete rack. The complete rack includes 8 crossbars and the wind fairing.
Hi Jon....was wondering if you had any insight on the dynamic weight capacity of the side rails. There seems to be a lot of different thoughts on this.
Looks good, this will definitely be the route im going. Also I ground tent camp all the time, i use a hitch carrier to help with cargo if I need and a roof basket if I need more cargo so a RTT will just take up space.
Great video for an awesome product. Their website shows the cross bars with pin holes, not slots. Are yours a newer model? Or where can I find these bars?
Thanks for this. They look great. Will be looking for wind noise analysis. I was leaning ttoward a front runner rack but at over $1100 I have been hesitating. With the slot system I will be curious if front runner accessories will work. What is the weight limits for dynamic and static loading?
I’d be hesitant to give true weight numbers as they are still on the stock roof rails. However if also seen people put RTT’s on stock rails also. Having 4 of these I feel disperses the load pretty well
Man those look stout! Great looking product and super easy install. My Rago awning mount didn't fit after powder coating my rails and I had to remove the bars just to try and install. These bars are a great looking product and the easy install, wow. Nice job
Hey Jon, Great install, I'm also in Florida and the Crossbars make sense. There are a couple of trails in Clermont Florida and all other activities are at the beach. Side Note: What percent of tint do you have on your 4Runner? Thanks.
Hey bud! I plasti dipped my roof rack end caps, Never using plasti dip before I noticed slight chipping on my paint work I guess I should have applied more layers, I accidentally snapped one of my clips from the end caps when removing them but it's still snug on the bar when re attached. How's your plasti dipped roof rail holding up so far and around how many coats of plasti would you recommend? Thanks for sharing
Yes, you do, I have the same exact install, at 40 miles per wo wind fairing, and about 60 mph, humming sound. Ordered wind fairing, ordered all Aluminum, rails and fairing. Love the rack.

I'll probably go with the crossbars for me 4Runner, but was wondering what you used to paint your stock rails? Painting aluminum can be tricky, so what did you do to make the paint adhere to the rails?
Thanks Jon, nice video, I've been in the market of upgrading my factory cross bar. I have a Thule Force XT XL cargo box and the factory cross bar is just not cutting it, it flexes and keeps bouncing. I've been told to buy an after market cross bar like Thule or Yakima but doesn't wanna spent $500 for it. My question to you is, would I be able to use this cross bar with my Thule box. It looks sturdy but not too sure if the thule box mounting part will actually work with this bar.
They look good! I know you said you don’t think you’d get a roof top tent, but do you think those would handle the weight of one with two people in them?
The factory rails are going to be the main concern for holding that weight, not the crossbars. The crossbars Jon installed are much sturdier than the factory rails.

I’d like to start off by thanking you for the contact you create I’m sure you’rI’d like to start off by thanking you for the contact you create I’m sure your experiences. I had a question about the LFD crossbars you installed on the factory roof rack. They did not look like they were anywhere near the roof on your video. But I have seen a few comments online about scratching, form what I saw that was from the wind deflector. Thank you for taking the time to read this. I hope you enjoy your weekend Juan
Great review brother! I just ordered three rails with the wind deflector in steel. How does the finish look for the powder coating? What did you use to paint the factory rails? I’m thinking about the spray bed liner...or some simple high temp flat black rustoleum.
At 8:57 you say these 4 steel LFD xbars were cheaper than OEM. Huh? On Amazon, 2 OEM bars are $114 (free shipping w/prime), so a set of 4 would be $228 - and, being aluminum, they wouldn't rust and being aerodynamic they're supposedly silent, and if you bought 4 (vs. the standard 2) for extra support, you could probably mount a refrigerator up there, evenly loaded. The LFD "steel" (not aluminum, not stainless steel) bars are $80 each or $320 for 4 (plus $28 shipping). Stock = $230, LFD = $350. And, due to the higher wind noise (than stock) you still likely need a fairing, too (which, at LFD is another $40, so now we're up to $390. Basically close to $225 vs. just shy of $400. Am I missing something?
So if we were to just buy more 4runner cross bars you could create a sort of platform and just strap things on to them right? Won't be as nifty with holes to screw things into but cheaper.

Blue TRD Jon yeah that’s great. I got in contact w ecotechne too. Their full rack isn’t priced that bad, under 800. But read or saw your vid about rusting issues. Undecided now.
If the oem rails on the 4runner were steel then yeah definitely powder coat to prevent rust, but it’s alloy so you can paint em’ whatever way you like.

Another great video! I just sent my stock roof rails in for powder coat because I like this route. Questions: 1. I know you got the steel ones, but I also saw aluminum LFD crossbars...other than alums being more expensive and lighter, was there any other reason you went with steel? 2. If wind noise becomes an issue, do you know if I can just add a wind faring to the frontmost crossbar, or do I need to install the LFD rails to add the wind faring? I could probably just call them but thought u might know. 3. I get my Maxtrax boards today. Do you know if MaxTrax boards are easily mountable using the MaxTrax mounting pins with the LFD crossbeams? Can u mount the boards facing front to back, or is it only right to left? I’d much prefer mounting them vertical to the crossbars to reduce wind noise. I do like how you don’t have to remove the plastic rear end caps to install these crossbars...on the other side, I guess they are easier to steal??
Disregard #1 and #2...I ended up ordering 3 LFD cross bars (2 steel and 1 aluminum). As far as the Max Trax are concerned, LFD customer service assured me that there are many ways to mount the Max Trax. Not sure how the wind faring will look with the factory rails...still on the fence about it.
So sorry meant to comment back! People have said that with adding some bolts to the top the wind noise has reduced. And yes maxtrax will have zero problems mounting
Love your content Jon. Do you have any insight or have you heard any reviews on the wide version of LFD's cross bars? or why one would pick the wide vs standard size cross bars?
This makes me wonder…does anyone just add more factory crossbars? Or am I the only psycho out here doing that? Currently at 4, thinking about going to 5 or 6.
I bought a set that includes the fairing. It sat too low about 3/62 of an inch. I am not the only one who had the same problem... anyway, everytime I drove, I heard a vibrating noise and thought they went loose but werw not. I rem9ved them to return them and I discovered the fairing has dug into the paint on my 4Runner. I was hoping LFD will help with the pint, but they only offered to send me a touch up paint. Pathetic customer support and crappy design. I can confirm I was not the only one who had this issue as another 4runner forum member also returned the product.
Will these rails be able to accomodate a couple of solar panels? Thank you so much for this video. Edit: Also, did you go with Carbon or Stainless steel?
They say not to go over the weight Of the stock rails. However I’ve seen RTT’s on stock rails soo idk. I think Toyota shoots low with that number to be safe. The Toyota rails will fail before these.
Toyota rack is plenty strong. I have had 12 sheets of 3/4" plywood or 15 sheets of 5/8' Sheetrock on the roof at slow speeds and short distances many times and have not damaged them yet. I don't know how much weight that is, but I can tell you that is plenty heavy. I would like to know what is the weight rating on these cross members if they are stronger I will get those when I get my 6th gen 4Runner. Been waiting about 5 years already, this is ridiculous.
I purchased the LFD cross bars from Victory 4x4 and was very disappointed that they provided no installation instructions . Even worse the bolting system requires the removal of the end s of side bars separating the ends from the side bars the inserting all the bolts . Upon discovering that and with no instructions I went back to the vendor and asked one for instructions and two for about system that was shown on your video where no end caps or side rails detached from end caps . I want to slip the rails and bolts without any end cap removal as per your video.
@@TRDJon I canceled my order for a large rack, exact same reason, I'm not going for a overland rig. Do they make a wind deflector for the rack you ordered?

This makes me wonder…does anyone just add more factory crossbars? Or am I the only psycho out here doing that? Currently at 4, thinking about going to 5 or 6.
Will three of those support a 165lbs RTT?
Do y I know if these can hold up an RTT?
I bought a set that includes the fairing. It sat too low about 3/62 of an inch. I am not the only one who had the same problem... anyway, everytime I drove, I heard a vibrating noise and thought they went loose but werw not. I rem9ved them to return them and I discovered the fairing has dug into the paint on my 4Runner. I was hoping LFD will help with the pint, but they only offered to send me a touch up paint. Pathetic customer support and crappy design. I can confirm I was not the only one who had this issue as another 4runner forum member also returned the product.
Do you think it will hold a RTT?
I'm confused. What happened to the vs. the full rack?
Awesome vid man ! 🤙🏼 Are these capable of taking the weight of a roof top tent ??
Should be. Limiting factor is the stock roof rails
@@TRDJon thank you ! appreciate the reply, have a great day man 🙏🏼
You too!
Did you purchase the stainless steel?
yes
kinda look low profile very nice I want that for my 4runner. How much per piece of a bar?
I think the are 55-75 ish per bar? Depends if aluminum or steel.
They do look pretty sweet, and easy to install.
Yes they definitely were very easy to install
Will these rails be able to accomodate a couple of solar panels? Thank you so much for this video.
Edit: Also, did you go with Carbon or Stainless steel?
yes they would and this was SS
This is a great option if you cant afford a whole roof rack and it looks way better then oe crossbars
And you can build up to a 7/8
how do these hold up the plasti dip? Love the videos!!
Very very well!!
Trying to look for these exact crossbars , I think they don’t manufacture them anymore 😢
They may be out of stock.
They are there in the steel crossbar section. The aluminum are different.
Are you using the stock side rails?
for this yes
Is there an update video regarding noise and having used for awhile?
mmm I dont think I did. I have their 7/8 rack now though so I upgraded.
I really couldn’t tell if they were noisy or not from your video. How noisy are the 3/4 racks?
Thanks for responding
If you have the wind faring it’s not noisy at all.
TRD JON thank you! Enjoy your videos. God Bless!
Great video, waiting for my LFD Bundle set.
I replaced my stock ones for two of these. TY for the review
Thank you for the comment! Glad it helped!
It gives it a different look to it, what's the weight capacity?
They say not to go over the weight
Of the stock rails.
Were they not LFD ? Cuz with the LFD you shouldn’t have to bad to remove those
whats the max load on the bars
Is the hardware stainless?
I’m not sure of the actually material. But mine have not rusted yet from what I’ve see.
@@TRDJon they look like steel/cadmium plated??
@@TRDJon I canceled my order for a large rack, exact same reason, I'm not going for a overland rig. Do they make a wind deflector for the rack you ordered?
How much noise do you hear?
Good bit without the fairing they have now
aluminum vs. steel, why either??? thanks
They look great!
Can you elaborate on the wind noise caused by the bars?
Thanks
I am in the process of making that widow 👍🏼👍🏼
Did you power coat your roof rails or painted your self ?
I painted them myself
Blue TRD Jon I just saw the video !!!! Plastic D. Will do same whit mine !! Great videos !!!
Thank you! No worries!
Hi
Can you help where I can order srooss bars please
Very first link in the video description.
Steel or alloy material?
Steel. They do have aluminum
Look great. Excited to see what else comes in 2019.
Thank Auston! Excited for yours as well! If nobody sends another FJ in soon you may have to send yours in with whatever updates you’ve done!
This was so extremely helpful!!!
Glad it was helpful!
I’m kind of turned off LFD. They have no contact information for people outside of the US. It’s crazy! How are we supposed to contact them?
LFD if you’re listening I’m talking to you
online chat and if it's after hours - they will email back
What's the part number?
