  • Welcome to the Mid-Wales Counties Mental Hospital, an architectural marvel nestled in the serene landscapes of Wales. Originally named the Brecon and Radnor Joint Counties Lunatic Asylum, this historic site was a beacon of early 20th-century medical innovation and self-sufficiency.
Join us on a fascinating journey through the extensive ruins of this once state-of-the-art institution, designed by Messrs Giles, Gough, and Trollope of London. Built at a cost of £126,000, (approximately equivalent to £20,160,000 in 2024) the hospital was inaugurated on 18 March 1903 by Lord Glanusk, who praised its ingenuity and dedication to patient care.
As we wander through the remains of the hospital, echoes of its grand past are still visible amidst the encroaching wilderness. The drone footage captures the sprawling layout of the building, showcasing its compact arrow plan and the vast agricultural estate that once made it self-sufficient. From the overgrown pathways to the decaying structures, every frame tells a story of resilience and change.
Our exploration delves into the heart of the hospital's history, from its early days treating patients from Brecknockshire and Radnorshire to its expansion after World War I to accommodate patients from Montgomeryshire. During World War II, the hospital played a crucial role, taking in patients from Cardiff City Mental Hospital and later serving military purposes.
Post-war, the hospital returned to civilian use and became part of the National Health Service in 1948. This era brought significant innovations, including art and occupational therapy and the integration of male and female patients. The site also hosted the Mid and West Wales College of Nursing and Midwifery and various other medical services.
As we navigate through the dilapidated wards, recreation halls, kitchens, and workshops, we uncover the layers of history that make this site so intriguing. The drone footage offers a unique perspective on the hospital's layout, while the hand-held GoPro footage gives an intimate look at the remnants of daily life within these walls.
For those with a passion for history and a love of exploration, the Mid-Wales Counties Mental Hospital offers a poignant glimpse into a bygone era. Join us as we uncover the forgotten tales and haunting beauty of one of Wales' most historically significant sites.
Don't miss out on this captivating journey through the ruins of the Mid-Wales Counties Mental Hospital - where history, architecture, and nature intertwine to create a truly unforgettable experience.

Hi Liyanam, indeed, it's such a shame that it's got to this state. Sadly, it's probably beyond saving now 😞
