Matthew Good Band- Live in Coquitlam (1998)

  • The release of this concert is dedicated to the memories of Geoff Lloyd and especially the man who filmed it, edited it, and produced it- Travis Jeremy Simons. Without him this video would not be here. Travis tragically passed away last year, back in March of 2020: www.mapleridgenews.com/obitua...
He filmed it when he was 17 and this was his first/only time doing something like it, but you would never know given that it looks like it was done by a professional.
Given the continuing crappy times we’re all living through, I thought I should finally give this a public release for those who are still interested in MGB and Matt’s music. Hopefully it'll give a lift to a few people and their day whenever they see it.
Tbh, the only reason I didn’t release this sooner was that before Travis passed away last year he asked if we ever did release it that said release would only be done with Matt’s (and or Dave/Ian’s) permission. I contacted Matt last year and asked, but unfortunately wasn’t able to get a response back. However, both Ian and Dave have said they are fine with it being released. Likewise, given that Matt never explicitly said he was against the release either after reading the message (at least I'm assuming he read it since there was a "read" receipt), I’m assuming if he didn’t want it to see the light of day he would have said so. However, if he does get ahold of me (I'm on the Near Fantastica message board) and ask for it to be removed, out of respect for Travis and all Matt's music has done for me over the decades, I'll respect the request and remove the video. I don't expect that to occur, but I figured I should at least make the offer known publicly.
With regards to the actual concert, this is also the only known existing, full video performance of Raygun and also the only live audio or video footage of 2 MGB songs from Underdogs. In fact, when Travis first shared the setlist I thought he was probably mistaken about the name of the first encore. When I clarified with him he assured me it was indeed the correct song. When he told me how it was preformed I was beyond excited and blown away. When I actually saw/heard it finally, it definitely did not disappoint. For those of you who never saw the original thread, I won't spoil the surprise, but hopefully those who are still fans of MGB's music will appreciate it as much as I did when they get to the encore section. It's one of the most haunting and beautiful things I've ever heard. I won't spoil the surprise, but it's the first of 3 encore songs. Also, the video unfortunately fades out at the start of the last song because the camera Travis was using ran out of tape?
Lastly, for those of you who don't care about surprises, this is the setlist:
1:00- My Out of Style is Coming Back
    4:00- Strangest One of All
8:07- Stage Banter (Skateboarding and concert ideas)
    8:52- Haven't Slept in Years
12:26- Stage Banter (Recognizing/joking with Leonard)
    13:08- Apparitions
    18:24- Everything is Automatic
22:54- Stage Banter (Appreciating the opening acts)
    23:16- Raygun
    26:20- Deep Six
    30:15- Stage Banter (Play Station)
    30:43- Primetime Deliverance
36:43- Look Happy, It's the End of the World
    40:45- Rico
    44:05- AC/DC Cover (Thunderstruck)
    45:45- Generation X-Wing
    50:28- Stage Banter
    51:01- Indestructible
    54:24- Symbolistic White Walls
    59:39- Stage Banter (The 80s)
    59:59- Invasion 1
    Encores
1:05:05- Mystery Song (still not revealing this one, lol)
    1:09:10- Middle Class Gangsters
1:14:50- Stage Banter (A sincere thank you)
    1:15:08- Alabama Motel Room (intro)

Just as an aside, if anyone who sees this happens to have any old video or audio footage like this laying around in their own storage that has never seen the light of day (or happens to know someone who does) I would ask that you consider digging it up and leaving a comment here. A friend of mine knows how to restore and digitize old footage that could otherwise degrade and become unplayable due to old age. Stuff like this, while not possessing a huge market, means a lot to more than a few of us and being able to get it online is sort of like adding things to a (digital) museum, imo. Saving it is important because, aside from the importance of music and art themselves in all our lives, unshared art and live performances are another kind of experience/art altogether. Indeed, to capture a new kind of energy to a song, or to hear something that has never before been heard (or played live), is what makes art/music so compelling- the surprise, excitement, and reveries created are one of a kind/timeless because worthwhile art is timeless. I don't think I understood that when I was younger, but as I've gotten older and been lucky enough to meet/know all the people who've been kind/gracious enough to share things I would have never gotten to see/hear otherwise, I've gained an appreciation for that fact. So hopefully this can be a small way for me to continue giving back in turn and just maybe might inspire others who have similar material in their possession to get it out and online as well (provided the original creators/band members are not against the release).

Man, thank you Lloyd and Travis.. very sorry to hear he has passed.. this is fucking magical. I can't imagine being the person recording this back in the day.. because this show would have been an absolute fucking banger. I would have been shaking the entire time, holy shit. Travis was a legend. I was about 13 at this time and had a few Matt Good songs on like Big Shiny Tunes. Went on to perform a few as a crap band in a small town, but this still hits very hard. Travis my man, this has brought me immense joy, I hope you know that wherever you are man.

I'm from Coquitlam. I've seen Matt live like 6 times. I even went to the weapon video shoot and made a t-shirt in pen that read "i hear matt good is the shit", and got it autographed...even though he fired the director, and scrapped all the footage. There is a much music behind the scenes video from that day which I'm in. I owned low-fi b sides and his book at last there is nothing left to say.

This makes me want to cry for so many reasons. 1.) I never saw the band. 2.) This passion/power/fill in the blank will never be around again. 3.) Time gets us all. 4.) The feels and emotions it gives me. 5.) The lightning in the bottle has been let out.
Thank you Matt for getting me through life even at the age of 39. I literally wouldn’t be here without you and the band.

I recently saw MG and "his band". It was my first time experiencing some of the songs performed live. I know what you mean in that these moments can never be repeated. Legendary.

Just for some context Matt graduated from Centennial high school in Coquitlam in maybe 1991. This show was across the street from the school in a rec centre rink and so many people from school went that it was like a high school dance/concert. Completely not a regular concert venue. It was absolutely ridiculous at the time for this show to happen at that place and it was amazing. A local band from the school opened as well. That singer is now in a well known band called the Matinee.

    • @abeach5420
      @abeach5420 ปีที่แล้ว

@@BenDowswell hiya it was across street from Coquitlam highschool, Coq. B.C. at .....( wait for it....) the skate rink leasure facility in '98. I am so blessed to have been front and centre at all so many gatherings.... events, gigs, then concerts. Being cple yrs older than Matt I was so lucky to be connected to industry to get details on last minute gigs in our demolished endless dive bars n' clubs. Now I live under an hour from Matt and see him out 'there' with kids etc.... but I never ever say anything nor shout out haha. He brings us 'back' to early 90's before winning the CFOX radio deal. I miss the strength in voice from this time.

My idols when I was in high school in the late 90’s. they’re the ones that made me first pick up a guitar. Can’t help but wonder how many great songs were left on the table after Genn left. Those two had such great chemistry and even though I liked the albums after audio of being, it always felt like something was missing.

The absolute pinnacle of Matthew Good Band. Fantastic concert captured at their peak in my opinion. Long before the pressures of Beautiful Midnight and entering the US market. Long before the fallout with Dave Genn. Jeff Lloyd saw it all coming. Eclectic piece of history captured here in Canadian music. Thank you so much for sharing!

First concert I ever went to (When I was 14.), and the only one I can recall being held at the Coquitlam Sports Centre. May 1998, and I remember Indestructible was the single on MuchMusic and 99.3 The Fox at the time. Saw several friends from school there, since it was local. The second opening band before MGB was an Age of Electric side project with one of the Kerns brothers.

Holy cow, thank you for posting this. Footage is in great shape for being almost a quarter century old. Big MG fan, very happy to have stumbled across this on TH-cam.

Thank you for this! The first and only time I even saw Matthew Good Band live was just before they went main stream. I was the tag along younger brother to the "cooler" older sister and her friends. I remember the drive north of Toronto to this small bar where we had to line up outside till they let us in, once we got inside the ceiling must have been 10 feet with the stage only raised 1 foot above the ground opposite the bar. However all the tables were full and we hand to go out back to the patio and sit on the ground in the corner till Matthew Good Band was ready to play. Once they started the energy was crazy as everyone crowded around that stage and after they completed their set, I remember the band walking past me to the back room until they were called out for an encore... It was amazing! Up to that point I had been to music festivals before, but nothing have they ever felt that intimate... A great performance!

MG is truly captivating to listen to and the audio quality is actually really strong here considering. I saw MG solo several years later, but I wish I could time travel back to this show. Seeing the "Out of Tape" signal and it fading out at the end is so surreal. It's like seeing Tool before Maynard stopped being psychotic in front of the stage.

What an incredible document. The true spirit of rock! A band, right as they're breaking out, and doing a big hometown show. These types of shows have better energy than any show you'll see on a passing tour and are once in a life-time for the band. So great that MGB have this amazing video of the show. I can't see a reason why Matt wouldn't want this shared with the world. This is him and the band on the high from making it. Matt is incredibly talented, a first-tier songwriter and has been so gracious to live the life he has led in order to share what was inside him with us. Thank you for this video 🤟

Wow. Thank you. Honestly I’m speechless, I didn’t expect to see a video of almost all my favourite MGB songs all in one performance. This stuff is scarce and I thought it didn’t exist. I recommend watching this start to finish without spoilers. Jesus. Thank you so much. Made my year. ❤️

After a big change in my life in 1997, moving 1000 miles away from home, I got to see this tour concert at the local university in Thunder Bay. Amazed to say the least. Have been a fan since, caught his shows here 3 more times over the last 24 yrs. Always incredible. Got to hear a few faves live. Thank you for sharing this piece of Canadian Music History.

This took place about 4 years before I’d ever come across the music of MGB, but an incredible nostalgia trip all the same, and far more than just that. They’ve been such a tremendous influence on me growing up and into adulthood.

also I'll come clean, many years ago I worked production for a matt good tour and we had his backline at our shop the night before the tour started, and I definitely took a couple of matt's guitars out of the cases and played them for a few seconds. hope that was cool, matt. for whatever reason you got a reputation for being a dick but I certainly never saw it (I saw you 4 times) and you were always incredibly nice to all of us.

Matthew Good Band and MG holds a special place in my heart. My dad introduced me to them in the late 90s as a kid (as a lot of my musical influence comes from him). Growing up in Buffalo NY, it always seemed my dad found a lot of Canadian artists(Tragically Hip, RUSH, Billy Talent). I remember countless hours listening to White Light Rock & Roll Review on the first generation iPod back in 2004 while on vacation. I am 30 years old now going on 31 in a few months and this video just gives such a sense of nostalgia and joy to the early days of Matthew Good Band. Thank you for this, from the bottom of my heart.
