- Dashcam video shows a motorcyclist splitting a lane between two cars and very nearly causing a devastating accidents. Police say such high risk behavior is becoming more commonplace.
As a motorcyclist, I condemn that guy’s dangerous riding. He’s a danger to himself and everyone around him, and he shows no regard to anyone he shares the road with. Idiots like him make the rest of us look bad. He should have his license revoked.
Nice to see your input.
Don't talk about the car swerving over in front of the bike he's the asshole
100%
Lane splitting is illegal in TN; bike doesn't have a clearly displayed rear license plate; bike is probably stolen; rider probably doesn't have a license; the list goes on and on...
These a holes that do this claim it’s for safety.
I've seen them argue online that they are doing the people in the cars a favor by doing this, since it allows them to move on with their motorcycles and not add to the traffic jam by taking up a lane.
Kidna like the USA claims guns are for safety, but don't you DARE tell us that splitting away from bullets is more dangerous
I think some motorcycle riders are lumping their “filtering” driving with “lane filtering” which is legal in many states, that allows the motorcycles to filter between cars when stopped at a light. Lane filtering IS safer for motorcycle riders, as it is way too easy for a car to “not see them” and rear end them (which is inconvenient for a car, but often fatal for a motorcycle).
@@bigedslobotomy Lane filtering is also illegal in Tennessee, just like lane splitting is illegal in Tennessee. This video is from an intersection about 30 miles (+ or -) northwest of the geographic center of Tennessee, so it was illegal for the motorcycle rider to do this, regardless of whether you consider it to be splitting or filtering.

@@charliepiland3285 I mean the list that the officer would have made if the guy had been caught after he ran. The obvious ones would be lane splitting, hit and run, and plate not visible. No I didn't
I ride but don't lane split
So, no mention of any leads / efforts to ID the bike or the rider who left the scene of the accident he caused? Great reporting.

The real problem is cars like to play cop, they fail to understand what's happening around them and just think of a book (that has hundreds of versions)
The road is unpredictable and you need to expect the unexpected, don't get upset because someone didn't do something by the book as they are just reading the road

Bikes do it to reduce getting hit but cars do it to be an ass,
Lane splitting is legal in California. Nashville has been flooded with people moving here from California. Connection between those two facts?
I've seen a guy lane splitting on Murfreesboro Rd, and he was also occasionally hopping into the turn lane to pass cars. He didn't seem concerned about how little clearance he had for his antics, or the condition of the brakes on the cars around him.

After watching stuff like this, it makes it hard to worry about watching out for bikers.
For those who keep trying to make the motorcyclist a victim and blame the driver of the red car for this without bothering to figure out the lane shift at that exact point, this happened on White Bridge Rd at the point where an exit ramp from the westbound side of I-40 meets White Bridge Rd. This is in Nashville, which is not only the state capitol, but also currently the city with the highest population in the state of Tennessee. Last year, a bill to make lane filtering legal in this state was introduced in the state legislature, and I heard nothing more about the bill after that, so it likely never made it out of the first committee. Most people have no clue what lane filtering is, and if you try explaining it to them, they tend to jump straight to things like this video, or examples that they have personally seen (it has become more common in Nashville) of riders lane splitting and using any other opening (legal or not) in order to pass cars in heavy traffic.
Last year, Nashville's DA proved that he would respond to his office being flooded with complaints (mainly from out of state and over a youtube video going viral with what later turned out to be false information) by opening an investigation into whether felony charges could be filed against the person that police had already cleared of any wrongdoing, then spending two months wasting our tax dollars doing a more detailed investigation than he probably does for murder cases, before eventually allowing a press release from the police department stating that the internet mob's target had been cleared on the day of the incident by the statements of the person that the internet mob considered to be the victim. The person that the internet mob identified as one of their own and wanted the other person effectively lynched, had explained the situation to police in a way that made it clear that the other person had simply walked into a bad situation and reacted in a way that the police considered not only reasonable, but legally justified. Since they had cooperated by explaining the situation to police, and they were the one that ended up with the worst 'injury' of the incident, police apparently didn't see the need in hitting them with the fine for causing the incident.
So go ahead and keep blaming the driver of the red car for following the white lines painted (and somewhat faded) on the road at that spot. Work yourselves up into flooding the DA's office with complaints demanding that the driver of the red car be charged for trying to kill the rider. And then once you do that, you can forget about a bill to make lane filtering legal having any chance of being seriously considered in the state legislature. It wouldn't surprise me if it led to the state legislature being pressured to increase the penalty for lane splitting or filtering (since the majority of the public and the majority of the state legislature can't explain the difference between the two) to a fine of several hundred dollars and several months in jail. If you think I'm crazy for suggesting that could happen, take a minute and look up the penalty for doing a wheelie on a public road in Tennessee.
Blah blah blah cager cager cager cop cop cop

Just waiting for a comment from Paul 😂
Were you in the red car? Did the driver tell you this? How do you know, and why should anyone believe anything you say?
You watched the video and you still don’t know what’s going on. The red car was following the traffic lane, the black car drove in a straight line even though the lane was curving, and his tires even went over the line before he abruptly corrected.
@@YamahaMt0not 100%, you had better watch the video again
@@bokesnmokes why, I've done it 😂

No. He was not doing 100 MPH. More like 45 at most. While he could do better, the way how the intersection lanes are set up is largely to blame. Portland, OR roads are like this also, and most car drivers that travel the same road daily can't figure out which are their lanes.
If he hadn't broken state laws by lane splitting, the worst that could have happened is that the car in the right lane might have sideswiped the car in the left lane, if the driver in the right lane went straight a little farther before noticing that their lane shifted to the right. What you're not seeing in this video is that the cars were stopped at the beginning of the video at a light for cars wanting to make a left turn from an I-40 exit ramp that is to the right of the camera, and the contact between the motorcycle and at least one of the cars occurred at a spot where two lanes from that exit ramp are making a merging right turn. To complicate it further, one of the curving overpasses visible at the next intersection in front of them is an I-40 exit ramp that was added to allow bypassing those intersections and lights if you want to go the same direction the motorcycle did after the collision, and there is an additional I-40 exit ramp directly to the neighborhood you would be entering if you made a right at the light in front of them. Which leaves the majority of the traffic making that merging right turn where the impact occurred, actually crossing the two lanes to get to the left turn lanes at that next intersection.
The guy on the motorcycle was pulling his little moving violation at a spot where it's a miracle that there aren't more collisions between cars.
Let's be honest here. There's no way that the rider on the bike though that there was a lane between those two cars, no matter how bad marked lanes are.
Lane splitting is safer than staying behind the car. 30+ year rider in CA with over 300K miles logged with ZERO accidents.
Safer if motorists are educated about it, Dangerous in Tennessee because they are not aware of it and dont look for lane splitters like they do in California.
That was a side view mirror the motorcyclist contacted not a “ rear view mirror.”
It looked like that red car was oblivious and about to side swipe the grey car right before the bike came between them.
I find it interesting that no one else noticed the red car swerve. I detest lane splitting, but this was caused by the red car.
The lanes shift to the right at that point, to make room for the two left turn lanes (for the next intersection) that start at that point. The red car was following the lines marked on the road. The car in the right lane was apparently not paying attention and continued driving straight, resulting in the car in the right lane crowding the red car. If you watch for the lines painted on the road, they are visible after the motorcycle takes off through the next intersection. That spot is a mess during rush hour, and it is a miracle that there are not more cars colliding with each other, because there are also two lanes from an I-40 exit ramp that are supposedly making a merging right turn at the point where those two lanes shift to the right, but the majority of those cars from the exit ramp are actually crossing those two lanes to get to the two left turn lanes.
@@paulstevens7528 did you miss one? 😂
OF COURSE the guy on the bike was a dumbass, but did anyone notice that the black car kept going straight when the lanes shifted right, putting their left-side tires RIGHT ON THE WHITE LINE? They might have HIT the other car but for the motorcycle squeezing through!
That particular spot is where two lanes coming from the right of the camera' view are supposedly making a merging right turn into the lanes those two cars were in, but due to the overall layout of the surrounding intersections and ramps they are actually crossing those two lanes to get to the left turn lanes that start at that point. Collisions between cars at that spot should not be a huge surprise.
Nick did they find the man driving motorcycle
Who actually thinks lane splitting is a good idea? Smh
Maybe the DB in the red car should have just paid attention to their lane instead of trying to cut the bike off . The guy on the bike was wrong but the guy in the red car should’ve been charged for intentionally trying to run the bike over just because somebody else does something wrong it doesn’t mean you should to . It’s all on the video. The guy on the bike is not intentionally trying to kill somebody the guy in the red car.
If you look at 0:44 in the video, they took a still frame from the dashcam video showing that the red car is driving parallel to the white line marking the boundary between the two lanes, while the car in the right lane is angled toward the white line and the red car. Both lanes shift to the right at that point, to make room for the two left turn lanes that start at that point. You can see the white lines turn back to the left in front of the cars, after the motorcycle takes off, so that the lanes parallel the two turn lanes for the next intersection. The car in the right lane was the one that was cutting off the motorcycle, by continuing to go straight. But it's much harder to assume their intent for simply continuing to go straight down the road.

@@YamahaMt0 Both lanes shift to the right at that point, to make room for the two left turn lanes (for the intersection in front of them) that start at that point. If you look at the intersection in front of them and notice the curving overpasses, the overpass on the far right has a straight stretch that is about half a mile long, then a slight turn to the left, then it hits the curve to the right over that intersection. The way it's laid out, you really can't see how tight that curve to the right is, until it is right in front of you. There have been incidents of motorcycles building up a lot of speed on the straight stretch, easing into that turn to the left, then hitting the curve to the right without enough room to brake for it. In the attempt to make the turn, they drift over to the left wall, hit the left wall, then get launched over the wall of the overpass to land in the area around that intersection that is in front of the cars in the video. Not a single action from a car is needed for that to happen.

@@YamahaMt0 At the end of the video, he was clearly escaping from responsibility for causing a collision, which moved his list of charges from lane splitting, to lane splitting and hit and run. Someone else has pointed out that his plate is not visible, which would be another violation police could have added to the list if they had caught him. Quite frequently in the area around the city where this happened, hit and run is done by someone who either did not have the required liability insurance and/or was driving/riding without a valid license to operate the vehicle in question.
Maybe this was just another dumb criminal trying to escape the consequences of his own actions? Given that he is now facing a hit and run charge, which could be bumped up to a felony if the court wants to upgrade it to reckless driving, those consequences could easily be six months in jail.
What was the red car doing? Maybe assault.
It was following the lines that are painted on the road. Those lines indicate that both lanes shift to the right, to make room for the two left turn lanes at the intersection that is in front of those cars. You can see those lines more clearly after the motorcycle takes off. The driver of the car in the right lane wasn't paying attention and kept driving straight until they were crowding the red car. The red car was following the white lines that are painted on the road to show the boundaries of the lanes. Both lanes shift to the right at that point, to allow space for the left turn lanes at the intersection in front of them.
The driver of the red car definitely noticed the motorcycle accelerating from behind, and jogged right to close the gap, in an attempt to force the biker to slow down. Biker wasn't having it and shot the gap anyway.
Both did show poor judgement. But if the motorcyclist had been driving in a safe and respectful manner, nothing would have been started in the first place.

that red car CUT him off
How did it cut him off if the red car was already in front of him and the other car as well
Look again. the left and right lanes shift to the right at that spot, to make room for the left turn lane that starts there. The red car was in the left lane. The car in the right lane was the one who crowded the line between the two lanes. Determining whether or not the car in the right lane got too close to the line between the lanes, would require that the camera be positioned more to the left. Either way, the guy on the motorcycle would be the one getting the ticket, if a cop had been there and saw what happened. The car in the right lane probably wouldn't even get a warning from the cop, because there was no contact between their car and the red car, which were the only two vehicles that were legally supposed to be in that space at that moment.

@@Ferien7 Troll harder and get glasses, you have never been on a motorcycle
The real issue is the red car purposefully moved to block the biker from splitting the lane. Yes lane splitting is illegal and stupid to do but in this case the driver of the red car is more at fault then the illegal action of the biker.
Both lanes shift to the right at that point, to make room for the two left turn lanes that start for the next intersection. It only looks like the red car swerved to the right, because the car in the right lane kept going straight for a little bit past the point that he was supposed to also move to the right. After the motorcycle gets past them, you can see the white lines indicating where both lanes straighten back up after the shift to the right. The red car did exactly what they were required to do by law at that intersection. The car in the right lane probably wasn't paying as much attention to the lines marking the lanes as they should have been. The guy on the motorcycle was ignoring traffic laws. So, if you want to spread blame around, the guy on the motorcycle caused the incident, while the driver of the car in the right lane gave a small contribution toward moving this from a blatant (and dangerous for the guy on the motorcycle) violation of state traffic laws, to a collision, while the driver of the red car is completely blameless.
That area has a history of "the need for speed" resulting in motorcyclists causing their own death, even when no cars are involved. If you look at the curving overpasses at the intersection ahead of them, one of them has a straight stretch of about half a mile before the curve starts, and "the need for speed" has resulted in hitting the outside wall of the curve and launching themselves over the wall to fall to the ground below. With that level of stupidity on display, trying to blame a driver for this incident (particularly when the driver was following the white lines marking his lane), isn't going to win any sympathy from us locals.
@@paulstevens7528 I agree and I do not lane split nor do I ever tell anyone to do that. After reading your comment, you are correct on the red car but lets say the biker went down, the cops were called and an investigation was done. There would be 2 people at fault. The biker and the blue car. The blue car did not maintain its lane resulting in the crash to occur, the biker would also be cited for illegal riding. The moral of the story is if you care about your life and you choose to ride a motorcycle, follow the laws and remember it isn't the fall that hurts it is the sudden stop that kills.
Notice how the red car must have spotted the motorcycle, and moved right to cut him off. While I do not believe you should lane split unless traffic is stopped, the red car should be charged with assault.

So. You're going to purposely try to murder them if they lane split?
@@user-zu5do6ri6r No point in even attempting something like murdering a motorcyclist near that intersection, since they seem to have a habit of killing themselves. If you look at the curving overpasses at the intersection they were approaching, the one on the far right starts about three quarters of a mile to the right of the camera's view. It runs straight for about half a mile, with two lanes, then makes a slight turn to the left, before making the curving right turn above that intersection in front of the cars. At the same point that the curve to the right starts, the two lanes merge into a single lane.
When a motorcyclist starts that half mile straight stretch, if he doesn't see a cop in front of him or behind him, he knows that the police can't touch him until he gets to the other end of the overpass. If you haven't been through there before, it can be a little difficult to judge how tight that curve is before you hit it. There have been incidents of motorcyclists hitting that curve too fast, after building up speed on the half mile straight section, hitting the wall of the overpass on the outside of the curve, then launching themselves off the overpass to the ground below.
