I was part of an Army advance party in the early '80s to get things happening at the base before recommissioning was going to happen. RAAF came in after us. The place was a dust bowl with old corrugated tin huts. It was brilliant. Mirage, C130 and the Pilatus Porter doing training flights in. Days spent at the Katherine pool. No personnel were based there permanently at the time so we had the place to ourselves. Once the RAAF did come in we moved out. Left behind ration packs by the score buried at the end of the runway.

I lived in Katherine in 1970 and Tindal was there then. I had many friends who lived on the base.

Fantastic. The beefing up of our north has been needed for a while now especially in the current political climate and foreign powers maneuvering in the seas to our north. Good Job ADF.😉

Visited Tindal during Kangaroo 89'. Didn't get to look around much, was mostly a visit so our pilots could trade 'famil' flights with the fighter jocks. Good times.

RAAF Base Curtin is getting an upgrade. RAAF Base Scherger needs it too, although a bit difficult to access by road for materials. Forward attack bases is what we need. North "Bare Bases" are our defence or offence, which either way you look at it, we need it.

Yeah but will Tindal finally receive advance missile warning and defense systems?

K95, PB96, PB98, USMC rotations, numerous F-111 bombing camps. But in 2021, I'm not sure that RAAF Tindal is that 'central' to our defence anymore. Northern Australia has almost entirely replaced the Phillipines as a US training facility so, maybe, that is its only reason for being there. Cyber terrorism is a more realistic threat.

From that I assume there are no Europeans in Katherine. All the local community interaction featured aboriginals. Or was the feature simply racist?

good report ,except the emphasis needs a little refocasing on what your main role is in fact.RAAF is a military group for the purposes of WAR ,in defence and offensive operations. To protect AUSTRALIA and its citizens .To do this RAAF needs to secure from canberra a bigger defence budget .Secondly it needs to know the best way of using this money in equipment and personel .To me it appears we dont have the ability for extensive operations to defend Australia from CHINESE ATTACK.Of course if the CCP deployes it ships and military to our region we will know ,However we learn they may attack remotely meaning conventional ICBM,Who is working on high speed defensive missile programs to shoot them out of the sky,??? I myself have a way we can build this from scratch ,it will be effective without a single dirrect hit???that itself should to bright minds be enough.

Careful , if past actions are an indicator , Australian politicians will want to rescue Asia and leak the intellectual property to Chin so it can be built cheaply and China can grow its economy .... China's Dongfeng 41 is a significant threat made by any erratic Chinese "diplomat" and defeating the missile would not be easy

Nothing with the fake concept "CCP" in it should be read at all.
