We Army blokes were the first to enter Tindal as the advance party in 1984 to re commission the base for the RAAF. The accommodation was basic and we lived on rations, then the RAAF moved in. They brought their cooks and stores staff with them, great food and great gear. We moved out then the transformation took place. '84 was my last time at Tindal/Katherine ... fond memories.
"we were a bit of a latte set in Newcastle, we would go out for dinner four or five nights a week, socialise with our friends, lots of wine in the Hunter.... and we thought it was good to get a break away from that" Jesus, on what planet does leaving that for the desert seem appealing?
I was there in early 1969 as an LAC airman on attachment at then RAAF TINDAL ..no5 Airfield Construction Squadron where there doing work on the runway..the base was rough as guts basic but good..mess food the best..odd weekend do the milkrun in tree clipping run up to Darwin in a DC3..yeah the base was RAAF then !
