I make sure to ding their empty metal bowl like a bell when I feed my bunch so they associate the sound with food. This makes it more likely they will come home when they hear that sound if they escape. This was exactly what I was looking for. Our boy, Binx, is an indoor/outdoor cat. The dinner bell/bowl tactic definitely works. We are super lucky that Binx comes running, most of the time, when we whistle for him. I like the idea of keeping him inside at the new house with lots of toys for a 4-7 days. Thanks for the tips.

When he is one his own we trained him to go under our balcony and just sit there, when he does that we go outside and take him. That was one thing about my cat. She HATED being outside. I could leave ALL the doors and windows all day long and she would NEVER leave the house, in fact she'd be hiding behind or under furniture as soon as she finds out that the front or back door was open...
I moved from Florida to California. Before I would let my cats roam freely while keeping an eye on them. Since moving, I walk them with a harness. Strongly recommended! They adapted when they were already 2 years old, you just need to be patient with them at first. People don't give cats enough credit.
Carla B I live in Orange County CA You have no idea how many cats get killed by coyotes. I have warned family and friends and those that don’t listen always get devastated as the coyote kills them. The Vets warn you as well . Thanks for being responsible!!! I tried a harness and my cat refuses loool I rather have her alive ... she has the whole house to jump in

Aside from the microchip, they should be spayed/neutered ánd vaccinated before they go outside. Check with your vet, and if your cat has a condition that can spread to other cats, be responsible and keep them in.
Welp, I let my cat out in the back yard after a week. Whenever I change her litter, I usually go outside since she loves to go out there and play. At least I know she’ll always come back inside though, whether it’s to eat, drink water, when she gets spooked, or if I have to lure her in with her favorite toy. Every time I go near the door, she will run thinking that I will open the door for her to go outside. 😅
Onebb bob of my two cats digs music , he gets on an arm Of the chesterfield and spreads out On his tummy in the centre for best stereo , been out twice in the garden for 5 mins , we have two , I want to build a catio for them very soon not sure we want to let them out .
I just trapped mine in the porch. I built a little “safety” corner he can hide in. I brought out his food, a few toys and treats. He has not left the corner but he’s been an indoor car for 10 years.
I'd love to let my cats out for a bit if fresh air but we live 7 floors high and a bit panicked incase the jump over the balcony. My mum lives 9 floors high and she's done it with her cat I don't know how she plucked the courage to do that!
Lloyd Campbell I bet your cat wont jump. Just stay with him while he explores outside and yeah just as the video says make sur the cat is hungry so he will come back with you when you go back home.
I live in an apartment complex and don’t have a confined outdoor area to take them. Any recommendations on what I should do? Would you suggest a leash to start out?
Leash training is a great way to start! Would not only be great for your kitty to get outside time but a really lovely thing for you to do together =^_^=
my 2 cats are feral. The older one wants no part with the outside world. Now the younger one wants out - "now", all kinds of meowing an acting up. Just got out today. I guess it's an emotional attachment of thinking everything is safe inside for the cat. Coincidentally seen a fox today - not good. Will probably have to let her out at some point. Like the advice of not feeding her before letting her out. thanks.
I don’t have scheduled mealtime my cat except for wet food she just eats from the food bowl we leave out every morning for her and refill when it’s empty
hi , I live in a busy road and my cat always wants to go out all the time yet he doesn’t like any harnesses🙄 I would love to let him out but I want him to be safe
My cats in Florida always went outside for periods of time during the day, and when my parents moved to Arizona with a couple of our cats their whole worlds changed and became inside/porch cats(super cool special cat screening with tons of plants) but I mean if you know you live somewhere like that, then you probably already know it’s not the video for you seeing as how harness is the only way. I’m assuming you have to worry about the risk of large birds taking cats if you have coyotes. Totallyyy get it, and have had cats in both “worlds” lol it’s crazy in Arizona the cat isles seem so small when shopping 🛒 I would assume it’d be bigger with more toys/stimulation seeing that everyone has their cats indoors

can u answer my question please, i have a 20 year old cat going soon, he used to love the outdoors but now he just lays and does nothing all day, any recommendations?
This is completely normal, don't worry. Your cat is an old man now and like humans, as they age they tend to want a quieter life. Rags is exactly the same, she's13 this year and in her youth was outside all day hunting. She still enjoys the outdoors but not as much as she used to. Older cats tend to sleep more and prefer comfy sleeping places to the wilds of outdoors, it's ok though, it's normal and this way you get more cuddle time!
I have a 20 year old cat and she used to go out allll day and catch birds and be crazy, in her old age it started with just going outside for smaller increments and eventually would just go and loop the house greeting me at the front door when I just let her out the back, but she felt so victorious making that little trip. One day I think she got lost as her motor skills aren’t the same and wound up across at the neighbors. My room mate tried to grab her and their crazy dog came running out and chased my old lady up a tree. I spent 2 hours finding a neighbor with a tall enough ladder and got her out. Let’s just say even though she loved the outside she was done after that. She was the happiest and so energetic that day like she had came back to life and has been in awesome mood weeks to follow. But I’m too scared to let her out any more even though it once made her happy, and she asks less and less as well. Any who thought I’d share be careful with your senior cats. :)
I really wish she replied to this question because I'm wondering the same thing!! I've got 3 neutered cats the oldest is 3.5 years middle is 2.5 years youngest is about to turn 1. Do I let them out all at once? or focus on one at a time becoming an indoor outdoor cat??

Hello. Maybe have the cat have his food and litter box in one area that you want him to be comfortable in. An another area just to play or an area in the window where he can gaze out. All cats are easily starteld with sudden movements.

I have tried her on a color and lead and a harness and lead but she juat flops to the floor and freaks out. She dislikes other cats if she see's other strays in the garden she hisses and makes weird growls. She will dart out the front sometimes but she sticks to hiding behind the bins probably where her scent is off the litter tray. But then she is keen to get back inside. I have noticed she doesnt really go and look out the windows anymore to be nosey. I am wondering id having her spayed has made her abit insecure since. I would like her to start going out when the warmer weather picks up anyway.
Catherine Duffy Ok, Catherine, listen to me and listen to me very carefully. Pls do not let your cat outside. I have a kitten around the same age as yours and I plan to only let him outside when he is a bit older on a leash like a couple times a week, otherwise zero, zilch, nothing. Outdoor cats live way less, get lost, stolen, hit by cars, are susceptible to illnesses, get chocked when their collar gets stuck on bushes, fall off buildings and trees, get eaten by predators, and so much more! Pls research it before you do this to your cat, especially, especially if she doesn’t want to and is happier inside. My kitten, looks at the balcony and sits on the window sill every day and constantly tries to go outside and it’s tempting but I love him to much to do that to him. Just pls consider it. Hi there! It might be easier for your kitties to adjust to outside if they're all allowed out at the same time - if you're unsure though you can always talk to you vet and they'll be able to help you too :) If you feel more comfortable only letting them one one by on though, feel free. :)
They might start hanging around the person feeding them. Especially if allowed indoors. Make sure to put an ID collar on your cat along with a microchip. You can also purchase a GPS tracking collar.

Just make sure the door to your house is open for her and don't worry too much, she'll likely come home in her own time. She's probably just exploring. If you're worries you can leave some of her fave treats, blanket or even used litter near the door so that she can smell her way home 💜
while your cat is inside, save droppings & pee sprinle around yard. or sprinkle the old litter around the yard, also sprinkle cat nip around the edge of your house

My cat has had an indoor life... I can only take her out on a leash... We live in an apartment, there's activity and other animals on the site unlike when I first got him, he's had good and scary experiences outside since new Tennants moved in...
Cats really should never be outside unsupervised and without a leash and harness. Outdoor cats typically live much shorter lives because they fall pray to wild animals, traffic, poison, and disease. If you want to stimulate your cat and burn their energy by taking them outside do so on a secure leash and harness. Also always make sure they have all their vaccinations and they have flea/tick/mosquito protection. Keep a close eye on what they’re eating too! Cats can potentially eat food poisoned to kill rodents when unsupervised outdoors, and even if your walking them, you have to make sure they don’t eat any grass that could potentially have weed killer on it! It’s the same as with dogs. Give your cat all the protections you would give a dog.
Thank you for your comment. I did consider mentioning leashes but it's not something I've ever had experience with. I did not feel that I can suggest it when I have never trained Rags to walk on a leash. Thank you again, sincerely, for your feedback. I appreciate it and it will help me to improve channel content.
almostanime Keeping a cat indoors is cruel. It's the same as never letting your dog off their lead. It's a risk to let your cat out, obviously, but it's a risk worth taking if it means they live a happier life.
@@amethiejuniper8066 Not in the UK. All vets, charities and rescues here state that for a cat to have a full life and demonstrate their natural behaviours it is best for them to have occasional access to the outdoors. In fact a lot of shelters won't even let you adopt a cat if you plan on restraining it to inside only. Of course this is not the case in the US where there are much greater dangers!
P L You're insane, my cat's would go depressed if they were never allowed to to go back outside, cats are like humans and they deserve to have their own freedom too
They should only be allowed outdoors if they are on an harness or in a cat enclosure in most places. Also, I know you're from the UK and there aren't as many predatory animals and dangerous things there - your advice here is dangerous and irresponsible with its limitations in the US or Australia for example, and unless you're in the UK or Japan, all animals need to be fully vaccinated before going out. I'm not going to threaten or insult or boycott you since your other content is good, and honestly the advice you have here would be fine (mostly aside from the risk of running into cars or poison or dogs - or boars/bears in more isolated areas etc) in a rabies-free and relatively free of things like hawks and coyotes and large predators place like some parts of the UK or Japan, this would be disastrous advice for the US and many other locales. I think you're not dangerous and ignorant but simply talking in the idea of a space such as where you live (where this may indeed be safe) and not thinking of more dangerous areas.
I want to sincerely thank you for your feedback and comments. I really appreciate constructive criticism and want to do the best for my treasured viewers and their cats. As you mentioned my advice videos tend to be based on cats here in the UK; my personal experience and on-gong education on cat welfare etc. are based primarily on UK law, practices and standards, but this shouldn't be the only people I cater to and you've helped me realise that. From now on, when giving advice concerning the safety and health of cats, I will look into international laws and practices too. Thank you again for making me realise this, hopefully together as creator & viewers/cat owners we can spread more awareness and advice that will benefit cats all over! xxx
:) And I apologize for seeming a bit snappish myself :) btw playing one of your other tracks right now to keep my roomie's cats calm and happy, that works for everywhere!
The indoor/outdoor cat debate is maybe the most heated of all issues in the cat community. I have had cats in my household since I was a child (a long time ago) and all have been allowed to go outside. Your choice as a cat owner to let them outside isn't what I would call irresponsible if you take proper precautions. But the offset to letting them be outside and express their wild nature is an increased risk of harm. Owners without a relatively safe place for their cats to be (close to a busy street, active predators in the area, harmful plants, etc.) should definitely reconsider letting them go outside. But for many owners with secure and safe areas to let your cats out into, having them outside can be very rewarding. A few tips I would have if you want to let your cats out. -Spay or neuter your cat. They will be less likely to wander. -Set scheduled feeding times and make sure you adhere to them pretty closely. -Use a signal like a bell or other noise to let your cat know when it's time to be fed. -Don't leave food out during the day the cat can eat (i.e. keep them hungry) -I keep my cats inside at night. I feed them shortly before I go to sleep so when they come inside, I close the doors and keep them in. This keeps them safe from night time predators and gets them used to being inside when I have to be away for extended periods. -Know your neighborhood. If there are dangerous things in the area, don't let your cat out. -Have safe places outside they can go to. If there is bad weather or they get scared, having a safe place close to home keeps them close by.
Cats have hunting instincts. Especially the males... Soooooo, no offense lady, but I don't think you should be encouraging people to let their cats out. Have you ever tried chasing a cat before? ? Especially in the open? ?.. Even if you were standing 1 ft away in ready position, if a cat darts at something or just wants to run around for fucks sake... odds are, your not going to catch one. There are soooooo many things that can occur. A harness maybe, but when you let your cat out, I think we can all agree that your taking a risk. Also,.. do you have a license for the study of cats or something,.. because just being an owner isn't enough. Cats & so many other sentient organisms are not even fully understood. So, to all people that watched this vid,.. just letting you know 2 realistic things right now. 1. You don't know this lady & i'm PRETTY confident she's not some sort of feline expert or something, & would PROBABLY rather get advice from a trained professional who has actually studied them & can prove it, &.. 2. You would be taking a serious risk, as this is an EXTREMELY touchy & hazerdous subject. I would suggest consulting a licensed professional. Thats all i'm trying to say,.... but hey, it's your cat. I'm just thinking logically here.

That was one thing about my cat. She HATED being outside. I could leave ALL the doors and windows all day long and she would NEVER leave the house, in fact she'd be hiding behind or under furniture as soon as she finds out that the front or back door was open...
Brilliant points!
Why not suggest a harness for the cat ? Where I live we have coyotes and they kill small dogs and all cats. My cat is an indoor cat for that reason
Yeah definitely don't let your cat out without a harness if you're in a densely populated area with traffic and wildlife.
I moved from Florida to California. Before I would let my cats roam freely while keeping an eye on them. Since moving, I walk them with a harness. Strongly recommended! They adapted when they were already 2 years old, you just need to be patient with them at first. People don't give cats enough credit.
Carla B I live in Orange County CA
You have no idea how many cats get killed by coyotes.

I think it's a very good idea to post a picture of your new cat on fb so people in your neighborhood know about your new cat

Yes i needed this my cat killed my lizard so now she is an out door cat
what are some ways my cat can come back in or signal me they want back inside? (i don’t have a cat flap)
Onebb bob of my two cats digs music , he gets on an arm

Well fudge my cat has been aluve 3 uears and has never been outside for more than 10 minutes any advice for that. he's terrified of the outside

Everyone in this comments section is obviously a cat owner looking to put their cats outdoors and “Free them” but haven’t you considered your impact on the cat’s health, and the enviorment?
I wish I had a cat 😔
DO NOT LET YOUR CATS OUT WITH OUT YOU SUPERVISING THEM. I agree with allowing them out but I watch them the whole time and give them treats every time,e they come in
can u answer my question please, i have a 20 year old cat going soon, he used to love the outdoors but now he just lays and does nothing all day, any recommendations?
This is completely normal, don't worry. Your cat is an old man now and like humans, as they age they tend to want a quieter life. Rags is exactly the same, she's13 this year and in her youth was outside all day hunting. She still enjoys the outdoors but not as much as she used to. Older cats tend to sleep more and prefer comfy sleeping places to the wilds of outdoors, it's ok though, it's normal and this way you get more cuddle time!
Thank you for your help.
Hi, I have four cats and wondered if I should let them all out together for the first time or introduce them to the outdoors one at a time?
I really wish she replied to this question because I'm wondering the same thing!! I've got 3 neutered cats the oldest is 3.5 years middle is 2.5 years youngest is about to turn 1. Do I let them out all at once? or focus on one at a time becoming an indoor outdoor cat??

For 6 months she hasn't been able to leave my room unless I'm outside and if u make any sudden movement like standing up she runs away
I don't know what to do to make her feel more comfortable in the rest of the house :/
Hello. Maybe have the cat have his food and litter box in one area that you want him to be comfortable in. An another area just to play or an area in the window where he can gaze out. All cats are easily starteld with sudden movements.
I live in a apartment/condo complex and I’m so scared to let Mikey go outside he is only 6 months old but he’s been indoor for a couple months now and I’m just so afraid to let him go out for the first time he could get easily lost and I’m afraid to lose him and I do not have a collar for him yet. But he is a good cat he is starting to listen and follows me to my room when I call him. I don’t know if I should risk it, I love him to death.
Only do what you are comfortable with, if you're not happy with letting him outside alone, maybe you could leash train him and take him out on walks?

Hi need somw help and advice
My kitten Grace is 7 months old before she was spayed she kept showing alot of interest to going outside but since she has been spayed 6 weeks ago she freaks out if i try and let her out.
Look at these sources if you don’t believe me.

Thank you for the tips. What if the first time you let your cat out, she runs off into other gardens straight away? X
Just make sure the door to your house is open for her and don't worry too much, she'll likely come home in her own time. She's probably just exploring. If you're worries you can leave some of her fave treats, blanket or even used litter near the door so that she can smell her way home 💜
Don't. Unless you have a cat-proof fence. Do not let your cats outside. People will mutilate them with their cars, or poison them.
Wait can u house train a car to come home even if there an adult
It's slightly harder to train an older cat but it can be done! Just be patient and consistant with them :)
while your cat is inside, save droppings & pee sprinle around yard. or sprinkle the old litter around the yard, also sprinkle cat nip around the edge of your house
The litter tip is a great one! Thanks!

Keeping a cat indoors is cruel.
It's the same as never letting your dog off their lead.
It's a risk to let your cat out, obviously, but it's a risk worth taking if it means they live a happier life.
Rachael Carthy literally ask any vet, or animal specialist or person that works with rescues, keeping cats indoors is way better.
@@amethiejuniper8066 Not in most parts of Europe!

Relax My Cat - Relaxing Music for Cats Letting cats roam outside of the owner’s property
Are you okay?
Relax My Cat - Relaxing Music for Cats Excuse me?
Thank you again for making me realise this, hopefully together as creator & viewers/cat owners we can spread more awareness and advice that will benefit cats all over! xxx

-Don't leave food out during the day the cat can eat (i.e. keep them hungry)
-I keep my cats inside at night.
Denton Gaemz My whole life all my cats have grown up being outdoor cats and none of them have had a problem, they always come back no matter what, they live freely and are happy
Really disappointed in this. It’s a shame to see such irresponsible behavior promoted.
