      Legion 7i Pro RTX 4080 and X1 Extreme gen2 owner here. Definitely go with Legion if you can stomach some additional weight and thickness, the vapour chamber cooling subsystem is superb: you can set it to quiet mode and still run everything at 60 FPS+. The slimmer chassis of P1/X1 leads to either throttling or excessive fan noise.

    Thanks for the heads up on cooling vs. 2nd SSD. Did not realize the RTX 4060 substitutes vapor chamber cooling for a 2nd SSD slot. BUT I just returned an XPS 15 9530 because the keyboard gets too hot. I was tempted by the RTX 2000 with a 2nd SSD slot but no vapor chamber cooling and a warm keyboard is a deal killer for me. BTW, Lenovo gave me $500 off (on top of the Black Friday coupon) after I chatted with a rep. Sweet!

    Thanks - I have a previous gen X1 Extreme and wonderful tho it is, it does overheat. RTX3080 which I only got because the bundle Lenovo was offering was (relatively!) very cheap. If you on low power mode and browsing typing I recon you could get 5-6 on hours out of it. With more powerful work 2 hours perhaps. I recently picked up a second-hand ThinkPad z13 (the all AMD Ryzen 7 with the 680M GPU) and for grins and giggles installed Bazzite (think SteamOS-like, but tweaked). I have been pleasantly surprised by things like VRR on the built-in display and pretty decent gaming performance for what I paid-$550. While Bazzite isn’t without its issues, the machine is pretty great for both a quick game session (basically a Steam Deck with a larger screen) and productivity in the Fedora GNOME desktop. The machine is giving me a whole new respect for the already legendary ThinkPad line!

    I have the P1 Gen 4 - similar issues with the quality of the keyboard and touchpad. The fingerprint issue is quite annoying, especially if you’re someone else who likes a clean unit. For the price, this is an issue that should not exist.
    The fan does kick in rather loud sometimes, so I got a laptop cooler to help the situation.
    The performance is exceptional. Graphics are fluid, sound is wonderful, speed is blazing fast. Overall, it’s a good unit. No plans to switch brands for a long time to come.

    Just bought a gen6 ThinkPad P1 with the RTX 2000 Ada Generation GPU, it's on sale for £1900 at Lenovo's UK web store, which is a great price. Came with the 13700H, 32 GB DDR5 RAM and 1 TB SSD, plus it has room to add a second SSD. Really pleased with it.
    This is not a gaming GPU, but it can run all my games at 60+ FPS on my native 2560x1600 IPS screen using high/ultra settings, with no problem. I've tried Diablo 4, Marvel's Spider-Man, Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, Horizon Zero Dawn, Forza Horizon 5 and God of War. The Ada GPU does still support DLSS 3.0 and frame generation, as well as ray-tracing. Best of all, it's a low TDP GPU, so it helps with heat, fan noise and battery life. It's thin and light, and I can even game with it on my lap using battery power without hearing fan noise, still at 60+ FPS. I love this machine.

    • @MashITTech
      @MashITTech  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I saw that offer after I got the 4060 model. I personally would have chosen that too for the second SSD and it comes with the WAN card which for me is so handy :( I hate sharing my phone 4g! @@MashITTech TH-cam won’t let me link my result URLs, but I have got a score of 8649 in TimeSpy and 17674 in FireStrike using “best performance” mode in power settings.
      The GPU is so new that 3DMark lists it as “Generic VGA” in their web site’s results pages, although the correct name is shown in the app’s results.
      Considering this is only a 65 W TDP GPU, I think those results are excellent. It’s around half the performance of my RTX 4080 mobile GPU in my Lenovo Legion 7i Pro, which is a thicker and heavier laptop, with a beefier vapour chamber.
      I have tried a bunch of my games and benchmarks such as Diablo 4, Spider-Man, Horizon Zero Dawn, Ratchet & Clank and Heaven 4.0 and it’s able to sustain 60 FPS, even when running on battery power, without generating loud fan noise. That’s exactly what I was hoping for.
      The RTX 2000 Ada does let me enable DLSS and frame generation and even ray-tracing (I use OptiX in Blender), so I’m happy with it.

      How are the thermal, fan noise and battery life with the RTX2000 ? Thinking of configuring with i7-13800H, 2500*1600 500 nits 165Hz, two 2TB SSD, 64 or 96GB RAM, 4G LTE wwan. Also, is the glass trackpad as good as the X1 carbon glass trackpads? It seems that mylar glass-like trackpads are not as good as the real thing.

    • @little_fluffy_clouds
      @little_fluffy_clouds 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@wingman22 the glass trackpad on the P1 is as good as the X1 Carbon (I have a gen 10 X1C with OLED screen as well, so I was able to compare first-hand).
      To be honest, I have a 2023 model Legion 7i Pro as well with the Mylar trackpad, and it’s not so bad, it’s perfectly usable, although I use an external mouse most of the time since that Legion is my gaming laptop.
      Thermals are good on the RTX 2000 GPU, however the CPU can hit 100C and throttle under synthetic benchmarks such as Cinebench. It works okay under normal usage, though. Bear in mind I had the 13700H, I would imagine the 13800H would generate even more heat.
      Also keep in mind the RTX 1000 and 2000 models for P1 don’t have the beefier vapour chamber cooler with Liquid Metal TIM, whereas the models with other GPU models do, but then they lack the WWAN adapter and second M.2 slot options. That’s a trade off between better cooling and more expansion/connectivity.
      I’m going to send my P1 back and order another one with a vapour chamber cooler because I prefer having a stronger cooler than having WWAN or two NVMe SSDs, but this is a personal preference, it doesn’t mean the RTX 2000 model is bad. It’s certainly the best value of the current 2023 P1 line with its £1900 online sale price right now.
      Fan noise is inaudible in best efficiency mode, with still good performance. You will hear the fans moving air at balanced or best performance mode, but it’s not a whining fan sound, more like a pleasant whoosh of air white noise type sound.

After testing and returning a Dell XPS 15 9530 (sans vapor chamber) for the same reason, and extensive Googling on other 2023 laptops, I am convinced the contemporary sleek & slim laptop design is a massive failure when it comes to heat, the #1 cause of premature laptop death.
