  • Union Pacific 4014 also known as Big Boy is heading out for her 2024 westbound tour. She will be touring the Midwest & portions the west coast. 4014 was built in November 1941 by ALCO. It is an oil burner that has a max speed of 80 mph (130 km/h) & a tractive effort of 138,240 Ibf (614.9 kN). A wheel configuration of 4-8-8-4 & a total weight of 1,198,500 Ibs (543,630 kg). In 2014 while she was at RailGiants Train Museum in Pamona, California she was picked for restoration by the Union Pacific. Being restored from July 2016- May 2019 she was being converted to burn oil, & when she was being broken in she used Challenger 3985s tender since it was already converted. When she was in revenue service she ran between Ogden, Utah & Green River, Wyoming where she & her class hauled freight. In the 1940’s they were reassigned to home base where they hauled freight over Sherman Hill to Laramie, Wyoming. A total of 25 were built in 1941 & 1944, only 8 remain. Some being in museums & some being on static display. She is to be leaving tomorrow to start her 2024 westbound tour.
