Louie Bellson must be in his late 60’s here. I remember him as being the first drummer to use a double bass set. He was around way before rock n roll. He was a jazz and big band drummer. Ridiculously talented guy.
Dennis was trying to make a name for himself as as far as I remember this was kind of his first showing on a big stage. Man he just stares down Bissonette waiting to see what he does so he can just do it way better and a thousand times quicker with way more confidence also. He definitely made an impression!
I saw Louie Bellson and Gregg Bissonette play at the then North Texas State University. Gregg was the drummer for the very famous One O'clock Lab Band, and Louie was there doing a demo. I had no idea how lucky I was to live near Denton Tx in 1980 and see both of those legends in the same year. That being said, I cannot believe Dennis Chambers is not a cyborg. What he lays down in this video cannot be real life. Musically I'd rather listen to Louie or Gregg, but technically you just cannot touch Dennis.

Dennis Chambers is the only live drummer I've ever seen where his arms actually became blurred as he moved around his kit, such is his speed and facility around a drum set.

@@elperenza My point still stands. He may have gotten it from that song ( which is black music, btw ) but Chambers can tell you exactly where that 'beat' came into prominence in black music.

i wouldn't say he embarrassed them. louie is an old skool swing/jazz player and bisonette is a rock drummer. dennis is jazz/ funk. 3 different styles and everyone is there for a good cause and to have fun and that's what the three of they were doing.

So GOOD to see Louie here. He was not only a pioneer of the drums, but a contemporary of Buddy as well. Oh, yeah, and he was a nice man, too.
