Bissonnette is so versatile and tasteful. His skill on the drumset is world class. And well, with all that he does in this performance, his sense of timing, his dynamics and his swing (after all, he's a jazz player and has played with the likes of Maynard Ferguson), his most impressive feat in this video, was balancing a cat on his head. Bravo!
I love this rendition of this song. I owned the VHS back in the 90’s, so I’ve heard it countless times. Truly a great job on the drums. Every nuance is so tasteful and lifts the band. I can’t get enough of it.
I think Mr Bissonette did his musical homework. He quotes Buddy by occasionally exchanging the downbeat to upbeat emphasis, especially around cadences. He also dupes the sax section's sfz's and fp's on snare during their soli. Those were both very Buddy things. Nice tribute, Mr Bissonette. Thanks.

This show was always a bit controversial to me as compared to many other BR tributes. Greg's sound is really well mixed with the band performance, but it was another story when it came time for the drum trio at the end of the show. I think Dennis plays with a TON more velocity than Lou and Gregg, and it seems like they did a sound check and left it for the whole show. I feel like Lou and Gregg got done dirty for the end of the show. The mix was like 90 percent Dennis. It's BRUTAL. It's really underscored by the production job on the first one with Steve, Dave and Vinnie. Sound on that event was aces.
I met Gregg about 2 months before the show and was there. I took my first of many lessons from Gregg a week later and have been friends now for 35 years. Just got a response 10 minutes ago from a text I sent him. So back when the VHS came out the volume was an issues. I bought one and it was as you described. At the time Gregg said (if I remember correctly) they were working on fixing it for future VHS. But yea the mix did favor Dennis tremendously.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAA!!!! Cause you don't know him. But that shouldn't really matter. One of nicest, coolest, friendliest, well-respected, ego free drummers on the planet. Just got a return text from him about 15 minutes. Glad to be friends with him for 35 years. Met a ton of great musicians through him.

80s style big-azz drum set, world-class chops and musicality, backed up by an incredible big band, this might be my favorite 15 minutes of music ever.

I dunno what's better.. Gregg's groove or Gregg's fucking hair. Holy Shit. King.

Still love those fills and the playing - fantastic after all these years 😂
Damn those drums sound amazing. Cymbals are great also. So bright! Oh and Greg is his usual amazing self!
I feel humanity from his drum,I feel warm parsonarity of his own with his drum play.
Great player!! Great chops, technique, time keeping, swing. But NO ONE will ever place Buddy Rich... NOBODY.

Bobby Shew lead trumpet. Blows me away!
I played with Bobby Shew in one of our USAF BIg Band Concerts with the USAF Band Of Liberty for a IAJE Concert held in Boston.
Are you sure it isn’t Charlie Davis on lead?
@@gowing10 They might trade off.
@@gowing10 Looks like Charlie plays lead on the second chart, Bobby the first
The man, the mullet, the legend. And the mullet again.

what a versatile beast he is. and you gotta love how the powder coated hardware matches his hair.
Wow he just destroyed it. That's still one of the very top shelf drum performances of our era.
Greg nailed it!

I agree Dennis ruined the trio by showing off and making a lot of noise

That is one mean mullet. I can't even hear the drums.
Ce kit était ahurissant! Et la coupe de cheveux...😂😂😂
Pretty versital chops for a rock drummer !!! but that wig is a bit much 😱
That was his actual hair lol
he was actually a jazz/swing drummer w/Maynard Ferguson opening for Buddy Rich before he was known as a rock drummer.
Not 4K
I truly can't stand this guy.
