God wish my pops were still alive today to see this he was in the army in Vietnam and served 21 years as a black man in it wish i could get more of his insight on it r.i.p pops
Respect.......my pops was a marine in Vietnam 69'-71'
My granddad fought in Vietnam for 2 years then went to Panama for 6 ... he loved the time there but Always told me never join the war is no place for a black man... I couldn’t agree more as I got older . Rest up gpops🖤
This will be Spike and Delroy’s year. After finishing it I wanted to watch it again. So very powerful in the emotions. The isolated Marvin Gaye vocals really struck a chord with me. I would love to hear you get into Spike’s filmography more (Bamboozled recently got a Criterion Collection reissue). He is a director with a more mixed hit to flop ratio financially and every movie I’ve seen so far has had something that has wowed me. The best movie of the year so far. Also very happy for Jonathan Majors for landing and succeeding in this role. He was my favorite performance of one of my favorite movies of last year “The Last Black Man in San Francisco”. Thank you for all that you do Dan!
I'm glad you felt the same as I did when I heard Marvin Gaye. As soon as I heard "mother, mother" I couldn't help but sing it and I damn near cried while doing so
Yep I agree Elder Delroy Lindo should have won for Best Actor but it was real disrespectful that Elder Delroy Lindo & Brother Spike Lee both were racially robbed from all the Awards shows!
Delroy has always been the man. Facts.
That was oscar worthy acting he did.
His performance in Crooklyn is amazing as well. Very dependable actor
Just watched it with my boyfriend who served in Vietnam. First time I've ever seen him get emotional. Excellent film with a lot to say in true Spike Lee fashion.
I totally agree Delroy Lindo acts his damn ass off in this movie and he's incredible, but I also thought Clarke Peters quietly powerful performance was stellar.
his jungle scene, goosebumps.
I could not agree more, Dan. This movie is my favorite film of the year so far. And Delroy Lindo abso-freaking-luty deserves an Oscar for his spectacular performance.
Lol this movie is ridiculously bad. I cant believe spike lee made this crap
@@freebee8221 speak for ur self
@@freebee8221 agreed
Dan, I'm so glad you brought this movie to my attention. Thank you for the thoughtful review and thank you, Mara, for your service!
When I listen to Dan's description of the aspect and stock changes used in this movie I am reminded of a VERY polarizing movie that did something similar but to a larger extreme - Natural Born Killers. I remember watching that movie in the theater and (other than being a bit freaked by it) absolutely loving the fact that so many different scenes and moments used different effects. I've thought that was a great technique at the time and thought it might be something that could be used to help with great storytelling but never really has (just changing the color timing of certain scenes isn't the same thing).
Nice to see you picked up on the "We don't need no stinking badges" line. I also noticed that Otis at the end says "Madness! Madness!" which I assume is a reference to Bridge on the River Kwai, which would suit the scene preceding for sure.
Hey Dan, just wanted to say that i appreciate the blue ray changes to the background based on the video, the little touches are really nice
Thanks for the touch of having blurays of Vietnam and Spike Lee movies in the background.
Great review Dan. I had to fight back tears watching this film. The four remaining bloods all reminded me of my late grandfather. The PTSD of black veterans is highly overlooked. Spike nailed this one
You're 100% right Delroy Lindo killed this flick.
Another great review! Will be watching it this weekend.
You're gonna enjoy it and you're gonna be blown away by the start of the movie
Never change your outro music, Dan. I love it so much.
This film was so much deeper and more intense than i excepted The unique use of a Marvin Gaye song but just the vocals made a ‘walk thru the jungle’ sequence much more personal almost eerie because you’re really forced to listen to the lyrics, Delroy has a couple monologues where hes looking right at the camera talking to you which forces you to listen but without breaking the fourth wall and with the camera switching to a 1960s color filter for the flashbacks instead of keeping the same look but de-aging the older actors... yea This movie is insanely well made
You are really good my man. Don't stop doing reviews, ever
@1:06 - And this is yet another reason I love Dan's reviews. Not revealing the other objective in the film. He respects the filmmaker and us, the audience.
Love that you have your own channel now Dan. Enjoying what you're doing sir.
So Dan, aspect ratios done right, huh?
Unlike that Michael Bay Transformers movie HT Commentaries reviewed a while ago. Which one was it? Revenge of the Fallen?
My goodness, your disdain was quite palpable and hilarious to watch.
Dan you’re the best new reviews on TH-cam.
I really want to see this movie now. Thanks for the review Dan!
Definitely adding it to my watchlist, thanks for the recommendation Dan!
I watched last night. Based on your recommendations, I watched it earlier than I would have. It is really good.
Looking forward to seeing this one. I'm a huge Spike Lee fan and after visiting the War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City, I think this will have an even larger impact on me.
I didn't even know this was released today! Looks like I need to make some time tomorrow.
Thanks for the review. I didn't know anything but the basic synopsis, which was enough, but now I'm even more excited to watch. I'm also already hoping it gets a theatre run sometime after they open up.
I will check this film out simply because I like Delroy Lindo.
Great review, Dan! Watched it this morning and really enjoyed the film.
i had a bunch of friends and acquaintances work on this film, so excited to see it!
Definitely watching this since you liked it Dan!
Hadn't even heard of this before now but hearing you talk about it my interest is definitely piqued. Maybe I'll check it out this weekend, though definitely at some point
Great review! I haven't seen the movie yet, but I did see a behind the scenes short video from Netflix showing Spike Lee and the quest for the right poster art for this film. It was a great dive into history and imagery that made me more interested in the film itself.
I love how Dan has subtle recommendations to the film he's reviewing like Blackkklansman, Do The Right Thing, Platoon and Apocalypse Now. Sometimes you don't have to mention it to be impactful.
I was hoping for a Crooklyn or Malcolm X too, since they both star Delroy Lindo but that may have been a little on the nose.
Alondo Brewington crooklyn is fantastic
I'm looking forward to watching it after seeing your glowing review, Dan. I've liked Delroy Lindo in pretty much everything since Get Shorty in '95.
Cannot wait to see this. I've been on a spike Lee binge and the trailer looked so good - especially the cinematography.
Well said about Spike Lee’s mastery of his craft. He clearly still got it in him to deliver thoughtful of the moment films. Side note: Danny Bilson & Paul De Meo were the ones who wrote the original screenplay. Big fan of theirs (“The Flash” 90 TV series & “The Rocketeer”) thought it was worth mentioning. 👍
Great review Dan! I’ve been curious about this movie, but after your review I’m definitely going to check it out!
As always thank you so very much for your efforts, observations, and your video.
And please pass on my thanks to Mara for their service.
Thank you for your service Mara
The film was so good. The acting was stellar. I really hope Jonathan Majors gets more work too.
He’s going to be the lead in the upcoming HBO show Lovecraft Country in August
oop
Say the cover maybe once or twice but didn't realize it was Spike Lee. That, plus your review, this will be the next think I watch on Netflix.
Excellent review and definitely an excellent movie. I was glad to see you picked up on the homages to both "Apocalypse Now" and "The Treasure of Sierra Madre" (they actually use that famous line: 'Badges? Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges.") Your review said it.......but Spike Lee somehow managed to blend in multiple themes in one movie; from the tragedy of war, to our own historical racism, to issues of PTSD, greed........there's alot going on in this movie. A must see.
Newton Thomas Sigel deserves an Oscar nomination for those gorgeous looking flashback sequences. He got snubbed for Drive, and is certainly overdue for a nomination.
Amazing new channel Dan, you and Spencer was always my favorites in Screen Junkies and altough im kind sad that im not gonna see your dry style of humor in the honest trailers, im happy for you.
Feel bad that the pandemic is getting in the way of normal programing. But, since there are almo no new releases, would you consider doing a review of City of God? I honest think is an amazing movie on par with parasite and that didnt got any oscars because it had to go against Return of the King.
On par? City of God dumps all over Parasite.
The acting was good but I found it to be too long....and slow at times. I'm not always a fan of Spike Lee's directing style....the fact the actors weren't de-aged in the flashback scenes was distracting for me.
Yes, very weird seeing old Vietnam soldiers.
At first I felt the same way, but then realized how brilliant that was, you didn't have to guess who was who, it made it easier to focus on the message, and made it look like they were remembering it in their modern form
@Your Dad my thoughts exactly. You should check out my live reaction/review video. I say that while I'm watching it
Thank you for this video.
This review’s gotten me really interested in watching this now! Loving the set-up you’ve got too. I’m also wondering if you’ll be doing reviews of the Ghibli films on your channel while you’re watching them for the first time. Especially in times like these, those films are the perfect bit of wholesome escape to both comfort and enrich your soul.
The movie didn't work for me. The 16 MM aspect ratio combined with keeping the same (aged) actors was confusing. Just pick one of the two story telling devices. Cause the 16 MM makes it grounded, gritty and realistic, while the aged actors made it on the contrary very 'movie'ish'. There are way more of these shifts in tone that didnt work. On one hand it tries to be a great character study. The effects of ptsd and all the interdynamic trauma involved. In between former enemies, lost relationships, broken relationships and relationships that never even had the chance to start. This is where the acting and story works. But then there are these cartoon moments, that would have suited better in an indiana jones or a tarantino movie.
In short, it tries to be to much. Thats a bummer. Because if it would have been just a contained character study, with interesting questions and great acting, it would have been a way better movie.
I think it's now in my top 3 Spike Lee Joints, with Inside Man & Malcolm X. I'll have to watch it again to really rank it though. Acting was great, I liked some of the editing choices with using still frames when something historical is mentioned, the not de-aging the actors in flashbacks was an interesting choice, and like any Vietnam film it has a wicked soundtrack from the time.
Guess I need to check this one out tonight 😊
Literally just tweeted before watching that i've been rooting for Delroy since Get Shorty, so hopefully some new Stans find him in this amazing performamce.
I think that's Spider-man's leg on the table by Dan's arm but it sure as hell doesn't look like a leg lol
Great review :)
Hopefully watching this tomorrow night
Spike Lee's wild (but purposeful) tone shifts still keep me at bay a bit, but this is still a sleek production and worth your 2 1/2 hour time investment.
Shocking matter of fact violence, good direction, and fantastic performances!
the movie was HORRIBLE
the story was like a soap opera
unlikable characters
SOOOO LONG
but the worst of it all was the score and editing
if someone said to me that this movie was made by a first time director and not Spike Lee, I would totally believed
what a let down, because I loved Blackkklansman
You are right Dad. Delroy. Lindo is never turned in a bad performance. I was watching Malcolm X a couple of days before I saw Da 5 Bloods and even in that film when he played West Indian Archie. He should have been nominated.
Powerful film. Thanks for your review. You inspired me to see the movie and I'm really glad that I did.
The point Dan made about Spike Lee and the urgency felt is so poignant and exactly why I love him so much
Thought you said this movie will be like Artemis fowl? Same genre as Artemis fowl?
I can't imagine a better time for this film to come out. It's so precinct to our time and things that are going on.
I dunno what word you were going for but I do know "precinct" isn't it. Succinct maybe? Though that means 'brief' so not really a descriptor for this movie.
I truly appreciate you saying this how is on going problem in my black community
So agree with you on this review and the "Miss Fowl" review. Drinks up! But Delroy Lindo as always great actor and Spike Lee created another great film.
People are watching this with 2020 colored glasses. Takes a dump in the jungle. Digs one hole. Finds the gold. Come on.
The gold was all over the hill, he just found the one piece by accident.
this movie has 100 more flaws like this
one after another
it was unbearable
@@SceneComparisons Did Spike fire you? You're all over all the comments sections
Are you going to review The King of Staten Island? I just watched it and I would love to get your take on it.
5 Bloods remind me a little like Miracle At St Anna, Spike Lee's World War II movie
There are very few film critics that I rate or agree with, you Dan are one (even if you do like musicals). Thanks for this review.
Is this a review of Da 5 Fowl Artemis Bloods?
Nah this is for The Invisible Sonic Man
Hi Dan, can you review Blood Machines?
Delroy Lindo was great! His best performance since West Indian Archie in Malcolm X.
The screenplay that was rewritten was by Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo, writers of THE ROCKETEER. Respect THE ROCKETEER, Dan!
Did not know Mara was a Vet, I'd love you two to do some shows together, I love and miss her dead pan comedic timing on the Schmoedown.
Dan do a review on onward I'm interested
I did one back when I was at SJ/Fandom: th-cam.com/video/rUdajHj4L9U/w-d-xo.html
Do you give ratings in your reviews dan? I like ratings like Jahns and stuckman sort of catalogues things
Delroy lindo kills his performance and depicts soldiers at Vietnam. This couldn't came at a perfect time! Need films to wakeup theaters, Oscars and us as a unit in general!
I too have felt that the actors playing the characters in flashback, as opposed to deaging or casting younger men, really said that they never left. That they always thought of Vietnam and that no matter how old they got, they were still there, like all soldiers. Good choice from Spike Lee to do that.
Delroy was fantastic but something felt off about this movie, maybe tone and pacing; I don’t know
I read this as "Das Bloods"
"Oh a Das Boot sequel/remake...?"
Beerfest?
Hilarious 😆
I found it to political, it made a number of negative comments regarding current politicians and involved a real life active protest group
Great review Dan, I'm going to watch this Movie for sure now. I was in Vietnam in '69-70, in the Army flying BirdDogs out of Chu Lai and DaNang. Even though a Pilots life is different than ground troops, war is never good at all. After I watch the Movie I'll put in more comments.
@@sommebuddy No I liked the Movie, and Delroy was intense, but it's just a Movie. I have talked to some guys that have gone back to Vietnam, and they say it's different now. War is no picnic, but I didn't have it bad there. Like I said, Pilots have it pretty good!
Delroy Lindo should win the oscar.
Sure because he is Black and he matters
I watched this movie this morning and it was deep and it was really good I suggest everyone gives it a chance and watch it
All the shootouts were shot like a student film...but sure call this a masterpiece
we all gonna ignore the fact that this film is also about stealing gold
🤔😂
To have a film centered on black Vietnam War but also touch on issues about race, class, some Asian cultural aspects plus mental health and generational trauma plus how the military treats black American soldiers. A brilliant film. Easily the year’s best. If Delroy Lindo isn’t a front runner for Best Actor if awards shows are held, I’ll boycott I swear. His performance was sublime and one of the most realistic depictions of PTSD I’ve ever seen.
Dan do you ever review documentaries? I just watched 13th on netflix (free on youtube) very eye opening.
you should the 30 for 30 Be Water Bruce Lee documentary
so happy to see delroy lindo singled out. dude has always been great.
I think it needed some cutting. Sorry. I enjoyed the movie quite a bit, but I really do think it had some moments that dragged. It mostly had to do with Delroy's descent. Though I loved his performance and agree with you on everything about it, there were weighty moments that could have still managed the same impact if they were cut down.
I'm going to go against the grain here and say I thought this film was poor.
The script was clunky, the directing was surprisingly amateurish, the mixing of aspect ratios gave the action a really cheap 80s tv vibe and the use of older actors to play their younger selves was awkward at best.
The whole experience was a huge let down for me because I'm a fan of Spike Lee and all things Vietnam.
Just my opinion, respectfully.
Ok thank you I FEEL LIKE IM ON CRAZY PILLS with all these 10/10 reviews its getting. Great message, shite film. Awful writing, hit or miss acting, really poorly shot and directed action scenes and boring! None of the characters held any weight it was to the point where certain deaths were more comical than anything especially with how the violence was filmed. If this is a 4 or 5 star movie than Black Klansmen was a 20 star movie. This spike joint is full of reggie!
Is he going to do collabs?
I'm glad you decided to go on your own Dan. The SJ guys were holding you back IMO (except for maybe Spencer). I wish you and your channel great success.
The score by the great Blanchard felt way over the top to me. I didn't love it like I have other Spike movies. I also believe that people love this movie because of what is happening now. Which is complicated.
the score and editing were the worst part
This was such a powerful film. A bit messy but it is really gripping and uncomfortable. If spike and Delroy (and Johnathan Majors for supporting) aren’t Oscar nominated it will be another disappointment. But wow. He was just fantastic, and so complex and angering and sad. He’s just so complex. This movie had me squirming, and I haven’t squirmed in a movie in such a long time. I’m glad Spike is putting out great, powerful, and politically active films still.
Hard agree about Delroy Lindo. The cast is great, he's consistently great throughout his career, but my goodness, he's captivating here.
Watchin Delroy Lindo in DA 5 BLOODS is a great way to remind myself of an extraordinary actor who never had a bad role and made every movie 10X better for him just being there. I remember terrible heists movies were so much better with his scenes. Lindo deserves an oscar.
The movie? Is more raw than BlackKklansman. Angrier. More hurt. Spike Lee shows so much pain in this movie and all their characters are hurt and scarred and the war left them all with nothing but pain. It's the kind of movie that puts you thru a woodchipper. Not as laughable as BKKKM but not as stupid and pompous and self righteous as many other BEST MOVIE winners. D5B is raw and visceral and bitter. Like the quake of a tank.
Acting was solid I have no doubts that Delroy should be considered for an Oscar for sure. I did find the movie really dragged in points tho... I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as I did Black Klansman I’m definitely missing a lot of the hype for it unfortunately. A solid movie but not as good as I’d hoped it to be.
Apocalypse now is the far and away the best anti war movie . Im going out on a limb and saying Im not sure this hits the mark for me Loved the flashbacks, love the soundtrack. Mohammed Ali said in 2 minutes what this movie takes over 2 hours to not really say ...still way too many guns, way too much shooting, too much blood and gore . The mine scene to me was pointless Same really strange scenes - The anti oxycontin message but then they end up using oxycontin again...the father walking off leaving his injured son in the jungle ...really?....and of course the son who had never used a gun fires the perfect shot at the end. Just too many cliches . When it opened with Ali I thought this is going to be great and then just disappointed from there
Great points... All true, but personally I loved it. Delroy's performance, and the Bloods comradery were stellar.
Movie was trash
this movie was awful
you barely scratched the surface
@@SceneComparisons I think her review was very polite. And she is holding back. It is a hell of a lot worse than that. The acting was SHIT, the first time I saw Delroy actually act shit.
@@africanhistory agreed. only thing good was the locations. it could be all fake green screen, but they actually went to a jungle. ALL the rest was pure trash. especially score and editing
Delroy Lindo acted his ass off in this shit. Mans got skills.
Absolutely amazing film
