  • Is mindfulness a helpful practice and should a Catholic participate in it? In this video, Dr. Greg Bottaro explores the difference between Buddhist and Catholic mindfulness. He reveals the best way for Catholics to understand this practice and the path they should take as they seek to deepen their faith and be more present to God and those He has placed in their care.

Afer I was told mindfulness wasn't chritsitan I gave up all that I learnt. After a very stressful time I fell apart and was angry at God and wanted to sin. I prayed for God to take the load off and he prompted me to call a councellor who then directed me to mental health resources. I then read te information and saw mindfulness was the way to manage. I felt better and more in the presence of god. I feel some people at church get way too hung up on the act of mindfulness which has been proven to do wonders for mental health. to say that god doesn't want us to master our emotions is in a way discounting his desire for us to hold ourselves accountable.

Excellent presentation. I like you because unlike A LOT of christian commentators you refrain from judging other paths (religions) and instead explain the virtues of all. Not once did I hear the oft repeated, mostly scornful mantra of "there is ONLY ONE WAY to God, and that is through Jesus." While you may believe that, it is nice that you lay out the traditions of both Buddhism and Catholicism and let the listener decide for himself what path is right for him or herself.

We as Byzantine Catholic’s already have a approach to “mindfulness” that’s called the Jesus Prayer. The Jesus Prayer can be practiced by Roman Catholic’s as well of course or by anyone. I would read the book called The Way of the Pilgrim, it’s a short LIFE CHANGING book, few books can make that claim. Here’s how you pray it.
Step 1: Breathe in then say “Lord Jesus Christ”
Step 2: Breathe out then say “have mercy on me”
This prayer brings you to the present moment by invoking the most powerful name of Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit does the work of centering us or becoming still, “Be Still and Know That I Am God” Ps 46:10. Then if you are serious about advancing in this way of prayer I would purchase the book set known as “The Philokalia” and it explains in great detail how to achieve the stillness your heart desires but I would start with “The Way of a Pilgrim” first that might be enough for most. God bless!!!

This video is so helpful, i learned this a while ago but may God lead ppl to see this because the anti-meditation indignation is strong in the Christian community.

More should be said about Christian contemplation which is in essence meditation/mindfulness from a Christian perspective. I’m sure many who are drawn to the Eastern spiritual traditions would think again if they were aware of this.

Brother, God is willing and desires all men go to Heaven. It’s up to man to make the choice of Heaven or Hell.

thanks Greg, totally agree with you. I found mindfulness a first required step to contemplative prayer a much forgotten but ever so more effective mode of prayer and I think mindfulness makes anyone more peaceful and understanding, something a lot of fellow catholics could do with too.

Dr. I need to ask : are affirmations about loving accepting approving of yourself OK? Or saying I am wise worthy and valuable? Or I forgive you xyz. I really don't want to do anything occultish.

Yes! Of course these are OK. Like anything, thoughts and feelings can be encouraged for the wrong reasons or from a wrong motivation. However, we are made in the image of God, and therefore have infinite dignity. Thinking and writing thoughts of positive acceptance and approval of our very self and being are in line with Truth. Forgiving ourselves to unite ourselves to the forgiving Mercy of God is in line with Truth, and of course forgiving all in union with the Mercy of God is in line with Truth. None of this is to say to ignore the moral value of actions, but there is an important distinction between who we are and what we do.

It sounds like you just explained Ignatius discernment of spirits, which is superior to mindfulness.

Hi Mike, thanks for the comment. They are actually very different since Mindfulness is not a form of prayer or a set of rules for discerning spirits of consolation or desolation. Overall I agree, the Spiritual Exercises are superior to mindfulness, just as confession is superior to exercising. However if your legs can't work anymore to get you to confession, you need to practice some exercise first. It is a great observation to connect the two, and I do make the connections in my course on Catholic Mindfulness. In order to practice the Ignatian Exercises, one must first be aware of the types of movements that occur in our hearts, minds, and bodies. Being aware of the present moment is the necessary prerequisite to practicing the Ignatian Exercises.

Wonderful! Can you discuss yoga (and a good Catholic alternative) and Lectio Divina as it relates to mindfulness?

@Egbert IV Your spirit is conscience, intuition, and fellowship (with GOD) while your soul compromises of your mind (memory), will and emotions.

@Egbert IV I do not know one single or any Catholic source for the full topics. Watchman Nee was a holy man who discussed the spirit man. Aquinas wrote about the emotions. CWG teaches about the keys to hearing from GOD. Hope this helps!
