In this first-ever Penguin Talk, Harari shared his thoughts on the future of humanity in an honest conversation with Brand and the young audience about the challenges facing the next generation (and how they might be overcome).

Is no one gonna point out that Russell's a way better moderator than 99% of journalists and academics that interview him nowadays?
The way he spoke about 'time' and wrapping up. He reads a lot. That's why.
He's far more intelligent, articulate, and less constrained by convention than most journalists, especially in the U.S. Definitely.

Russel Brand did a really good job here. He made the interview light and enjoyable, and at the same time probed Yuval to go deeper into his ideas than I've seen him go in other interviews.

I first had some aversion against Russel Brand, haha. But yeah during the interview it changed to appreciation of his absolute great moderation.

Harari packs so much information and wisdom into his sentences, it really is a pleasure to listen to him.
He is, however, I feel sometimes he is pushing his thinking rather than asking open questions by using "isn't it" rather than "do you think".

It's at least very clear he is gobbling up every point that Harari has just uttered and repeats a lot of them in a different and more direct language that makes it fascinating to listen to. Harari is ofc a fantastic speaker too and no doubt one of the most important philosophers we have today in my humble opinion.

Brief summary:
- Rather than being "exploited", most of the people could be "irrelevant"to the monetary part of the society (such as currently homeless humans)
- If Artificial intelligence will know you better than you it can predict and/or shape your moves
- Philosophical questions (such as: "what is human") have a sort of urgency to address.
- If you want to have an impact, joining or creating some organizations could be helpful (human animal is stronger when they co-op)
- Focus is the key (distraction distorts your reality)
- Learn how to learn. The question is "how do I find my way in enormous amount of information"?
-Start with a question relevant to your life (such as: Why men dominates woman in most of the societies in the last 10.000 years?; or why most humans eat other animals?). Let questions lead you into an interdisciplinary and exciting path.
- Can we create a situation that we would not use the words like "irrelevant humans"?
- The difference between "prophecy" and "possibility" is important. You can create better future(s)

Childhood should be seen as a sacred phase of development and education as a means of the individual to empower themselves, as and when they choose to; not a punishment to be inflicted upon the unwilling until they are ready to enter the ranks of workers, bureaucrats and managers.

It seems to me that the purpose of life is to contribute to Society, and do good things. And the purpose of education is to learn how to interpret and understand the World. Students need to learn the "language" of the World. They need a good, solid, understanding of the basics. Then they can adapt to anything, and be better prepared to contribute.

It's good to search for things sometimes that you are not interested in at all. Maybe, like the study of flies. Throw the algorithm off. Also. Shut the phone off. Don't use it all the time except for phone calls. I like flip phones myself.

I agree. Fun fact: I taught 16-19-year-olds for more than 40 years. I always cringed at the inflexible system, but did everything in my power to focus on the only thing that matters: guiding young people into the wonderful realm of thinking for yourself as free, responsible, critical, curious, flexible human beings. There are, and have been, many of us teachers who have done this through the the years. Not all soldiers in the army of indoctrination have only obeyed orders, but we have used school as a platform to do what is possible. If you haven’t met teachers like this, I feel sorry for you. It IS possible to do a lot of good from within a system. A bit tricky, perhaps, but hey, everything that matters is. At least people should try to do what they can while waiting for some better educational system to arise. The points they made in this video about lifelong learning focused on your own deep questions was brilliant, imho.

*+Lucia Y* Completely agree, while I agree with the proposition that 'humans need work, its structure and its social contacts and the sense purpose/meaning it can provide' I disagree with it that it has to be work in the way we have now. garbage collection can do this, sure, but not in the best way. Maybe playing with children, or visiting a somewhat lonely aunt, or doing some handyman chores for a neighbour that can't do it all alone - maybe these things should be considered 'work', and better work at that, that some of the jobs we have now. Especially if we have AI and robots doing all the tedious stuff.

Is it just me or anyone else surprised at how well Russell Brand moderated this discussion! At first I was like why a Hollywood star, why?But he actually gave such insight with his questions and he was knowledgeable enough to give examples and steer the conversation in an interesting way with his probing/challenging questions.

I've seen other interviews Russel has done & he does do them very well. He is intelligent with an enquiring mind. He's good at picking up on ethical points of concern.

Russell Brand has an amazing intellect.....love the way he keeps saying “humans” when someone wants to ask a question....no doubt a subtle dig at the guy onstage with him who wants to insert AI into humans. Harare is a trans humanist/eugenicist.
Coming to this in 2020 - isolated and away from my kids thousands of km away.....My son chose to read Theology. I had read Law, Politics and Economics and retain a keen interest in these areas. I had discouraged his choice and questioned it. I was probably wrong.

After reading his two books : Sapiens and Homo Deus, I really admire the way he' s thinking about the past, future and especially these current global problems. He gives a clear picture for possible solutions about global issues. I am interesting in watching his speech.

I training my English and learn new things about past, present and future of humanity.

I was born in 1952 . I had redesigned my life over and over again perhaps 15 times. And at the time I had no idea about AI and adapting to new conditions. I still think all the adaptations I had to come up with was nothing personal. It was not about me. If any individual finds adapting to the new circumstances I do not have the heart to tell them that they do not have what it takes. I do not think not everyone has to be that flexible. I do not think that We have any right to demand ways to treat everyone as if they have to change at any given moment of their life. No. I feel that some people cannot change that fast and we have to find ways to create a system that is kinder and more gentle to some of the people if they cannot adopt fast enough. This is the critical point. Let's not forget we humans care for children, physically sick or handicapped , mentally not ready, psychologically fragile. We have to find ways so we do not push them around. This is a humane way. Disadvantaged groups of any humans or any other organic life must be treated with this in mind.

This makes sense to you because you are a good person. Yuval will never get it, we're "biochemical phenomena" to him.
Why is "adapting to new circumstances" a good thing? Far too vague. Is it a handicap to refuse to "adapt" to the hacking he is describing? I can think of a way to resist algorithms -- it may not work every time, but I already know it works many times: do NOT function in a single language. That alone builds your resistance to manipulation.
I am sure people will participate in the rat race in varying degrees of interest and no doubt reap the benefits from it accordingly. What's important is there to be a system to handle those who are unable to take part of it for many different reasons. The problem I think is that those people are often tossed in the group of people who don't want to participate out of sheer laziness which makes e.g. UBI (Universal Basic Income) quite impossible to get through any government. But the fact that the future will have so much automation that it will be hard for many to find jobs, means people need some kind of security through UBI types of programs, and the acceptance that some people find their own way to participant through sharing creative work or social work. I am sure as the amount of work people actually need to do in order to have a normal life falls to zero, these things will be impossible to ignore unless governments actually want half of their population as homeless people. It will however be interesting to see what the psychological effect will be for people who are trained in the old "work for pay" model we all live by now.
It’s one thing for me to understand who I am through an algorithm, it’s quite another thing for POWER to have this information.
Other than how much i enjoyed this lecture, i just cant get enough of how pleasant the stage illumination is. There is something very meditative about the colors present in that room.
But you figured it out on your own yuval ,that's introspection and it's what causes people to grow and develop into wise , natural human beings whose true calling is to become aware , empathetic, and understanding teachers whose wisdom is passed down to others in the hope we become closer to our source

Thanks for this. It's so relevant and I heard some excellent questions and I liked the way they were answered and how sometimes Brand translated or summed up Harari's answers. Russell Brand makes it sound like developing self-awareness and self-knowledge is something that happens outside of work. Nothing could be further from the truth. Work is one of the best places to acquire self-knowledge. And self-knowledge is essential to being successful in your work. The same is true in education. Better academic performers tend to have better awareness of their own strengths and weaknesses and the strategies that work for them.

For example, in a new speech Hurari said that ppl will be considered two classes- worthless & usable. In California they are saying parents have no full rights to their children but the government has supreme power over our children. So he said parenting will be paid but they way CA is heading what I’m seeing is that parenting will be paid if you raise your kids the way the government tells you to raise your kids only.

Big love for this talk. Another important point to consider is to learn skills to be more self-sufficient: gardening, sewing, carpentry etc. It is absolute soul food to create for ourselves. Self-sufficiency directly decreases our individual carbon footprint. And no algorithm will be able to sew your child, or best friend a blanket that will keep them warm in body and spirit. Food for thought.

Also...it was called Distributism in the 1920's. It allowed each of us to use our gifts for each other. Without monetary dependence on a government, each could use their abilities in lieu of cash. A little piece of land, independence...we will take care of ourselves and be happy.

Great discussion! Thank you. Yuval said early in his talk that we should look to our governments to ensure that the youth of today receive the kind of education they need to survive in the future. I would suggest that national politicians are likely to be the future 'useless people'. My government (in Africa) has done nothing to help the people. All it has done is line the pockets of the politicians. Education is already being re-engineered today by the private sector - Udacity, Coursera come to mind. There are huge changes taking place through these and other similar organisations and their association with universities around the world. So the future of the youth of today depends on THEM. Thomas Friedman in his book 'Thank You for Being Late' suggests that the previous 'digital divide' between the educated and the lesser educated has gone and the new divide is the Motivational Divide. The youth of today need to be intrinsically motivated (and overcome the natural laziness that Yuval tells us about) and learn, and keep learning. What they need to know is WHAT to learn, then learn it with the help of the Internet, organisations like Udacity, Khan Academy, Coursera and coaches and mentors (teachers in the world of yesterday). Schools also need to embrace these changes.
I've often found people who that either brought up in an elite school or those who leave an area (due to lack of opportunities) and goto a place with opportunity , or those with authoritarian parents from low income backgrounds - grab opportunities, work hard and often do well (often times , fair better than the indigenous population (eg many polish who go to the UK).

The question around 28:09 about “useless people” became incredibly pertinent during the pandemic. Essential vs non-essential workers. What profession was deemed essential was at times quite interesting e.g. florists (not saying they shouldn’t be).

The algorithm from computer can predict human in many aspect as you said. But they still rely on another human being to input all the data set and observe all the sequential action of an individual. rely on other human being to exude the consequential act. in a sense, hack human is manipulated to target certain group of people or individual who’s is either in a vulnerable position or leadership position. And what about data analysts, are they safe from hacking? And how individual protect themself from hackers in modern life? What’s the evolve really means for an individual? Thank you for your talk!

The kinds of decisions programmers make are how to best implement the rules and requirements provided to them by project managers. Programmers do not typically make decisions about the behaviour of a system, in the way described here

The future is not inevitable. What are we going to do about it? How are we getting educated? How are we educating ourselves? How are we educating engineers in ethics? How are we getting educated in ethics? How are our governments including technology and legislation for technology in our education and daily lives? Certainly we haver to be curios people. Exactly. They’ve got people thinking that they have to follow the technology or they’ll fall behind when REALLY it’s actually YOUR DECISION to ditch it and make it useless. People can totally turn shit around they just never do because they don’t know what it means to take ownership of their own lives it doesn’t even occur to them schools don’t teach it and neither do the parents and they’ve ditched their own intuition and that’s why they make out manipulative language, as if they’re some kind of f’n boss over you when they’re not and never will be that’s your territory. People should be able to detect phoney by now. And Yuval has a responsibility to say how pathetic the industry is and I don’t hear him say that.
He makes it sound as if all of this is a predetermined process, so people do not resist change. But change is not inevitable, it‘s up to the choices of voters and consumers.
