  • Every April during Spring Carnival, Carnegie Mellon University students race buggies up and down steep hills in and around campus The tradition was born 99 years ago. The construction and maintenance of each rolling vessel, which carries a human driver, are closely guarded by each team. Fringe, an independent Carnegie Mellon student organization, allowed a rare visit into its shop for a behind-the-scenes tour.

When I first say this, i thought it was a sport where you pushed car jacks.

I thought the same thing. The heft of all that water weight made it move like one too. Then on watching my first downhill the camera angle wasn't showing the curve and the runners (pushers?) looked like they gave up! I was scared for the spectators... and then somehow these buggies were steering. At 6'4" and claustrophobic (had to rent an apartment with high ceilings), I would never try... but it looks like fun for all involved.

In the 70s they had a down hill run in Signal Hill , Long Beach, ca. They were enclosed streamline skateboards that looked exactly like these but with skateboard trucks and large skateboard wheels..

This is why buggy orgs care about drivers so much. It takes something special to do it, far beyond just being short.

You could say the same thing about events that feature alpine skiing. Or ski jumping. Or downhill mountain biking. Or parachuting, wingsuit flying, skateboarding, etc, etc. You sign the papers and you participate at your own risk. But, yeah, I bet the instructors and judges need to be on their toes to make sure the safety rules are followed.

And it helps that they are doing this since 1920.
