Love Sweet Pea’s interview after the fight. Was steadfast that he won, but still acting like an adult and not childish. RIP champ

How can you have someone winning by getting out boxed and just running backwards all night goofy Oscar won this with no problem

      @user-sg8kq7ii3y 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

@@IssacLemus-mk8bk Nope. Official punch stats clearly had Whitaker winning the fight. Pernell threw more punches and landed more punches. Pernell controlled the pace of the fight. He dictated when the action would occur. Oscar tried to dictate the action, but Pernell had him hitting air all night long.
      Official punch stats:
      Pernell: 232 landed; 582 thrown (40% landed)
      Oscar: 191 landed; 556 thrown (34% landed)
26 sports writers who covered the fight: 14 had Pernell winning it; 11 had Oscar winning it.
But Oscar won the fight because he was the "Golden Boy". He was the young and up and coming fighter, while Pernell was already at the end of his career. It was to everyone's advantage to have Oscar win because he was the face of boxing at that time, and boxing needed him to keep the sport alive, and for everyone to make money.
Pernell was the best fighter of his era, but, for whatever reason, he was not as promotable. Pernell got robbed in two of the biggest fights of his career. He got robbed when he fought Delahoya, and he got robbed when he fought Chavez.
Pernell would have easily defeated Pacquiao if they fought in the same era. Pacquiao would not be able to touch Sweet Pea.

@@user-sg8kq7ii3y Julio Cesar Chaves SR Vs Pernell Whitaker: Winner Julio Cesar Chaves SR .
Can't agree with Pernell on the Chavez fight, though I accept mine is a minority view. I rate Whitaker very highly but he was allowed to get away with a lot of spoiling against Chavez.
The bottom line is this: you can’t tilt the deck for one fighter over another just because the ref is allowing him to get away with it. The “dice” was on Whitaker to win with the bookies, the ref’s were picked to favor Whitaker, Chavez had to come up to 147 which all he could muster was 142 lbs even at 31 yrs of age, and a ref who would allow Whitaker to use bush league tactics throughout the match to offset the rhythm of Chavez and cadence of the bout.
Cortez even allowed Whitaker to shove him after receiving a warning. What did Cortez do? Just said, “Hey! Knock it off.”. It was that bad. Whitaker was hitting low all night, not just the 4th and 6th. He received I think 11 warnings from Cortez if I recall. Not a single point was taken.
Anyone who understands boxing knows how low blows, hitting on breaks, etc, etc., tilts the deck in favor of the one doing it.
Chavez did win the 1sr, 2nd, 5th, 9th and 12. In my opinion Chavez did win the 6 round where the low blows took place, In the 6th round, the round was pretty even then the low blows started. After the low blows , on angry Chavez landed a huge right hand that launched Whitaker back into the ropes, I thought that sequence change that close round for Chavez
Mickey Vann says that him and the Swiss judge both gave round 12 to Chavez because he landed more and all Whitaker did was run. He disagrees with the Texan judge giving the 12 to Whitaker. He says had the Texan judge given the 12 to Chavez like the other 2 judges, it would have been a draw in all 3 scorecards. And the 6th round with the low blow, judge mickey Vann says that all Whitaker did was hit low blows to Chavez, so he wasn't going to award the 6th to Whitaker on low blows
George Benton said he told Meldrick Taylor to hit Chavez on the hips to disrupt his rhythm in their fight in 1990 and for sure his gameplan with Pernell was along similar lines, difference being Whitaker was a brilliant defensive fighter and naturally awkward. He was a nightmare to fight, particularly for a precise well-balanced combination puncher like Chavez. The idea put across by many, including the commentators and most the print media that Whitaker outfought Chavez is laughable. The plan was to irritate, frustrate, foul and keep him from getting set. It worked. And let's be honest here that he is fouling, a lot. I'm not talking about the low blows that Chavez always gets dogged on by the announcers (yes, he does hit low) - though Whitaker lands plenty of them here - but the excessive crouching so his head at times is level with Chavez' waistband, and also the holding and wrestling, sometimes maneuvering himself so he's behind Chavez. It's ridiculous. 50% of Whitaker's game in this fight is was is called "spoiling", when lesser fighters do it. I watched this fight live and it was incredibly disappointing - the fight to determine P4P no.1 did not live up to its billing. And that wasn't just down to the "bad" verdict or Chavez looking far from his usual invincible self, it was Whitaker's tactics. They were effective, no doubt but he shouldn't have been allowed to get away with some of the stuff he was pulling in there. Whitaker was the guy who turned the Leonard - Duran of the 90s into a underwhelming spectacle.

Judges decided that each man fought their heart out. Each one moved, and worked like they needed to, and neither truly overwhelmed the other. Sweet Pea moved beautifully in there. Danced around that ring like it was prom night. Chavez threw some of the hardest punches I'd seen the man throw in his life. Landing beautifully, though he was fighting an uphill battle against a brick wall.
Something seemed wrong though. PW just kept going and going. He was the energizer bunny. Did JCC lose his power? Maybe that was it for him, but no, the news came out. After the fight PW had to go to the hospital. It turns out that JCC's punches were hitting as hard as ever, and Sweet Pea's broken ribs proved it. You have to give PW credit. His tenacity to keep on going until the end, with broken ribs, and move like nothing was bothering him... except for the probability that the broken ribs he suffered weren't bothering him due to the cocaine found in his system at the hospital while getting his ribs mended.
The commissioner had to step in and change the ruling though right? Nah, they let it slide. What's done is done, and it's possible that he did coke right after the fight, and on the way to hospital. So no, they just left it as is.
Then some time later, a few months short of 5 years from this fight, Sweet Pea was in another amazing match up. He was fighting an amazing contender, Andrey Pestriaev. He went in there and also put on an amazing show. The man seemed to never slow down. He was ruled the winner, by decision. Again, he needed to go to the hospital. During his time there, guess what they found in this system? Well I'll be damned... it was Cocaine. Again.
Only this time the commissioner did step in. They stripped PW of his win and ruled the fight a "No Contest". Still not fair, but "rules is rules" and they didn't overturn it to make it a loss, as they should have with the Chavez fight due to similar circumstances.
Now, this makes one wonder. How many times did Sweet Pea fight while high on coke? Did it make him a better fighter? That is debatable. I mean the man was impaired and doing beautifully in the ring, but was taking shots that should have put him down for good. If he fought this well while high on coke, imagine what he could have done sober. Just think of that for a second, he fought impaired and danced around like nothing in the world could stop him. Actually nothing in the world could stop him, because of the coke.
He may have actually danced around, and fought much better without the drugs in his system, but would he have been able to keep up the stamina levels? Would he have been able to endure all those punches? He may very well have been able to do so, but in my opinioin, my perspective, no.
Maybe would have never been caught by the same kinds of punches that he was hit with. I'm sure having the coke in his system prevented him from being afraid of the punches and he walked right into them, or didn't avoid them, because.... well, because he wasn't feeling them. Why move?
In the end though, we'll never truly know what he could have done. Time is no one's friend and lost opportunities will never be more than that, lost opportunities. Anyhow, this is neither here, nor now; all that PW showed is that cocaine is a hell of a drug.

Whittaker 232 of those 160 were jabs so hooks uppercuts and right hands were only 72 that landed.
Let’s look at Oscar total punch’s landed 191 of those 45 were jabs. So hooks uppercuts and right hands landed 146. So who is the better fighter? Who won the fight? I’d agree with the judges.
