Trout Fishing at J Percy Priest Dam - Winter Trout Fishing Part 2

  • Once again I am doing some winter Trout fishing at J Percy Priest Dam. Last time I was here I got skunked so I am hoping today will be different. I start out fishing with a Gulp Minnow and a bobber. I eventually remove the float and try to swim it above the rocks without getting snagged. After moving around a bit and switching to Powerbait Trout Dough, I finally catch one! It took three days to catch this one trout. Perhaps as time goes by the bite will turn on even more. I went through a lot to catch this one, but it's my first trout of the year. If you want a challenge, try winter trout fishing at J Percy Priest Dam near Nashville TN.

    I really like your videos, it shows how hard fishing can really be. Most youtubers just cut out all of the casting and just show themselves catching fish. You show how hard it can be to catch a fish. Also, I like your “commentary”. I find it funny. Thank you and keep up the good work!

    In New Mexico we used salmon eggs and mini marshmallows. That was back in the 70's before all of these different trout baits they have today. We would chum them in with canned corn too.

      These trout are used to eating pellets for years, thats why I went with dough balls. They might chase after stuff as they get used to the water though.

    • @lancehoward1802

      True, wonder if you could throw a chroma glo crappie nibble on the barb after getting the trout dough on to help attract them and hold the dough.

  • @thespartanmk1
    @thespartanmk1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As someone who fishes for Rainbow trout almost exclusively (it's literally the only thing they stock in most of California's lakes,) I find the best way to catch Rainbows is to set up, throw out a bullet weight above a swivel and foot of leader with a nightcralwer and one with powerbait. Then you crack a beer, throw on some tunes, and wait. Sometimes setups with floats work, but in the wind, forget it.
    I do have success with things like Roostertails and Super Dupers. They'll hit just about anything that throws a shine. but I've caught far more on worms and dough.

    • @RealisticFishing
      @RealisticFishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its 40 degrees when we fish for em here... how about ever there?

    • @thespartanmk1
      @thespartanmk1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Realistic Fishing actually, yeah. Ice been out in 100+ I've been out when it's below 30. Where I grew up in the southern California desert it got pretty cold. A normal winters day was 30 and windy. Fished a lot of mornings bundled up.
      Then in summer, is be burning up in 95+ with wind
      The place was a special kind of hell.

      Realistic Fishing I always found worms work better than powerbait for trout. Try a very slow steady retrieve along the bottom. Or work a pheobe spoon, roostertail, or rapala just fast enough to impart action(in the winter trout are lethargic). Also, i know its cold but you should always wet your hands before handling trout or you will severely compromise their immune system. Just friendly advice keep on fishin

    A good set up for stocked rainbows is a size 8 hook tied to 4lb leader 2 ft from a swivel connected to a barrel weight on the bottom. Garlic scented green is one of the better ones if you can’t find pink

    Great video! What I have found with trout is they usually tend to like a drifting bait more and more or less tread water with the current with the water most of the time. Also from the video I noticed that you caught a rainbow trout. A key thing with them is their favorite color tends to be pink so if I were you I would try to even track down some pink shrimp or garlic salmon eggs. They usually work great! Glad to see you caught a fish though your persistence paid off!

    You definitely show a trait that all fishermen must have, and that's "patients". I was going to suggest a spinner, but I saw in the comments that you tried that. Power bait has always been my go-to bait for stocked trout. With all those shad, I still think a spinner or a spoon on a steady retrieve might be worth a revisit.

    Use the floating powerbait. Shape into a ball around your hook so it looks like the feed that they feed them at the Hatchery. Using egg weight ans a swivel to hold the line down. Make your leader 12"-14"

    I don't know if like striper fishing but u live on quite possibly the best land locked striper fishery in the country, the Cumberland River system is absolutely amazing for trophy striper, especially right below Old Hickory and Cordell Hull dams, the steam plant in the winter is a great place to catch em.

    For stock trout only power bait works. I use the power bait floating balls not the dough. I've NEVER fished for trout and tried all sorts of other things and just got the power bait floating balls the garlic scent and the colors of orange,yellow, white, with glitter mixed in it and I got trout after trout after trout.

      I totally mis-read this. LOL. I havent had a chance to try the balls yet, but the dough did well for me the other day. Video coming soon. 😀

    Dude they stocked them in Richmond and I can't get one too save my life! That was supposed to be my winter channel content! Epic fails repeatedly!

    i fished here at the dam and caught fish in march, i landed one about every other cast, your on the right side but stand on the small wall against the Dam and cast a lure that looks like a bream cast to the wall that comes out from the dam then put the tip of your rod in the water and reel fast as you can, (they are deep where the cooler water is), then slow down. good fishing

    In my experience, stocked trout like staying next to vertical walls since it is similar to to the tanks they are raised in. I try everything from powerbait to small minnows but surprisingly have caught the most with good old fashioned night crawlers suspended 12-24 inches from a bobber next to cement docks or any vertical surface particularly right after stocking. It seems they venture out to other areas once they get more familiar with their new home. Good luck!!!

    How far down from the bobber do you set the minnow?

    I don’t think that was really Airwolf man. Still cool. Kudos on the determination, miles driven, time spent not catching anything. And then finally success! Trout! BTW, my Realistic Fishing shirt is proudly worn in the ‘cook’ section of my latest video. Just sayin....

    Trout like moving water and rooster tails with the smallest hooks you can find with either a gold or silver(preferred) if you use powerbait give green garlic a try.

    Best time to fish below the dam, is when the sea birds are flying overhead...that lets you know the bait fish have been chased up the river to that point, plus everybody under the sun, is out there......

      We get seagulls when then they open the gate and the water rushes through. It stuns the deep shad that get sucked through and the seagulls go nuts!

    Great video. Congratulations on the trout! I have released most of the ones I have caught so far too. Try some Trout Magnets. They worked pretty good for me. The trout liked the pink trout magnets. But I did catch one on a yellow and orange one too.

    Try power eggs with a worm on a hook. Put a weight on your line. The power egg will float the worm from the bottom and put the worm in their face. I always catch them like this.

    Early stocked trout might be used to the food pellets their feed to?

    • @RealisticFishing
      @RealisticFishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, thats why small baits like corn, eggs, and pellets work good 👍
