  • Very windy and rough sea this Sunday at Mt Maunganui beach!
I am paddling the Fenn Bonito, a fun little surfski.
The GoPro doesn’t show well the size of the waves. My wife took a photo of the last one that got me at www.instagram....

Tethering your paddle to the kayak is a bit frowned upon. Your arms or legs could get tangled in the string. Especially if that string is tethered between your legs to the kayak. And mainly being the Kayak would be very heavy and have a lot of force behind it with a wave pushing it. If that line is wrapped around your arm and your kayak catches a wave, it’s going to cinch up very tightly around whatever it is tangled up with. Could also be your neck.
So my suggestion is to tether the paddle to your weak side hand/wrist with a very short string. And not tied so tight where you can’t slip it off of your wrist if need be.
But that way you have the string length very short to minimize entanglement.
Hope this helps. Keep charging 🤘🏼
Btw-just another tip. If you happen to be in a river with rocks, don’t tether your paddle anywhere.
The rocks and the current could easily cause things to get trapped or wedged in the rocks.
And hope I’m not coming off as a no at all. I am not that. Just have watched hundreds of Kayak videos over the years. And a lot of the ones that deal with situations that can arise.

😂 If you are on Instagram I have more short clips like that. I don’t have the wifi for TH-cam for the moment.

WRIST LEASH : I always paddled with a Mocke wrist leash. I modified it to add a clip/hook to tie it to the paddle so I can detach if necessary because of entanglement or if I want to remount on my weak side. Much safer than a paddle leash tied to the boat and not in your way when you are paddling.

Hi, I did consider a wrist leash and might get one soon. I also have a leg leash so there is a risk of entanglement but there is always a risk whatever the choice. Losing a paddle at sea would be pretty bad since we don’t carry a spare paddle on a surfski and I can’t let the surfski hit some swimmer/surfer if it is unleashed. Luckily for me the Bonito is a short and light surfski so even in the surf it is relatively easy to hold it. I fell quite a few times that day, in the morning and then the afternoon 😂 Luckily I managed to paddle through the surf too!
I welcome your advice and that’s how we all learn 😊
At surfski.info there are many threads about paddle leash. Many opinions too!
