Just a tip, you need to keep the 4 coloured sections equl to each other in order to gain more skill points, that is why you need to eat balanced to keep the 4 sections equal (played the game when it was 0.5.5)
Also with the skil tree, you need at least a few points in cooking and a bunch of points in farming so that you can gather seeds to prevent pollution once you start industrializing

On a server you can adjust the difficulty based on the number of people in it. If you have fewer people you can adjust it so you get more skill points faster and the cost of specializing is cheaper. This makes it so you're still able to learn everything you'll need to survive. Pretty sure single player just runs you your own private server so you can adjust it for yourself how you want.
The best way to maximise the production in this game is to make a kind of community hall with multiple workbench so you don't have to build one for each player!

how did you get the flat roof? Everytime i try to lay walls like a roof, they wont connect...and then i have to use those bug bloccky totem pole looking things as a roof.

Royal, you shouldnt collect all wild tomatoes and beets and stuff, if you do the animals cant eat and wil not survive, thats really bad. Farming wont help for the animals because they cant eat farmed food.
