I'm in the process of trying to make a portfolio for an apprenticeship and these videos are priceless. I've always done realism art so showing a wide range of work (like flash) is challenging. Your channel really helps, thank you :)
im so into the meaning of traditional pieces so thanks for that info on the boxer. im in love with that image now and need it on my body. thanks for sharing
They are good for practicing blending the markers as that's what they're made for but I wouldn't do proper flash with them because I like the grain and authentic feel of waterc olour paper, also you can stain it
Yeah you need to use inks so you can colour over the black I'm not an expert on ink brand unfortunately but a google search should tell you. I use 300gsm and I would suggest going for that as a standard but feel free to go thicker
Fair enough, I suppose you need to make it worth your time too! So would the comp actually involve some drawing or would it just be a "like/share" kinda thing?
Yeah sometimes, if you have to much ink in the pen it can badly bleed out into the paper a lot and ruin the sheet but that only happens if you overfill the pens like I said. Also when you stain the paper it can bleed a bit but not much, you can check out my coffee staining tutorial to see an example of that
Well there are some people who say you have to use inks and a brush or it's "cheating" and I kind of get that because the pens do make it a bit easier but I think that's a good thing! Water colour though I don't understand because as soon as you colour over the black it rubs off! So it's completely different to tattooing so I don't know why he would tell you to do that
Could you use the black and grey markers for the shading but then use coloured watercolours over the top? Seems a silly question once written down but i'm curious.
Hey mate, that was really really good. Thanks for doing that. Regarding tattooing been feeling alittle sorry for myself lately, ha. That's buzzed me right back up ! gonna check out your other stuff ! Thanks again. Rock on
Hi Grahame, really useful videos. I've been trying to paint flash for almost a month now. Like that other guy you mentioned, I've been doing the shading in water color too before trying to colour. So if you want to paint the shading do you need to use ink? Any you could recommend? Also, what weight paper would is best?
I have only had three people say to do it :P need more entries than that haha...might have to do it for a 2000 subscriber special or something so I get enough people entering
Hey bro! I'm an illustrator/graphic designer and I've always wanted to try this style but I've never known where the start with shading, then I stumbled across this video and I was like "SUBSCRIBE!!" haha Very helpful man, thanks! Gotta get me some of those pens!!
Sorry, but as a tattoo artist you should know how the shadows have to look like on a tattoo, and since when does the shadows fall like that on guy? it is impossible, and as a tattoo artist you should know stuff like that. I love you videos, but you should work on shadows how they really fall. And even though it's traditional you still have to put shadows where they really belong not random where you feel like. In all traditional drawings the shadowing is still according to the anatomy and realistic look.

It's traditional work you put the shadows where you want them to go and not where they would normally be on a photorealistic piece.
nah fuck that
disagree
You need to let an artist be an artist. And you are wrong about how traditional is done. Don't judge when you don't know what you are talking about.
This guy is an idiot.
old school? painting? kind of misleading!
Thanks dude!
