In Agra, there is a white marble Taj Mahal, and another one made of red stone. History tells us that Shah Jahan built the white Taj Mahal. However, very few people know about the red Taj Mahal.
Both of these Taj Mahals have one thing in common, and that is that both are symbols of love. This dates back to the time when British rule was beginning to expand in India. British soldiers were stationed in various Indian states.
One such soldier was Colonel John William Hasting, a Dutchman. Hasting lived in India with his family and was appointed as the commander in charge of maintaining Agra Fort. He loved his wife very much.
In fact, when William Hasting saw the Taj Mahal built by Shah Jahan for the first time with his wife, he decided that whichever of them passed away first, the other would build a Taj Mahal in their memory. Eventually, it was William Hasting who passed away first. Therefore, his wife, along with their children, built a red stone structure that closely resembled the Taj Mahal in his memory.
आगरा में एक संगमरमर का सफेद ताजमहल है, तो दूसरा लाल पत्थर से बना है। इतिहास में बताता जाता है क‌ि शाहजहां ने सफेद ताजमहल को बनवाया था। लेकिन लाल ताजमहल के बारे में बहुत कम लोग जानते हैं।
इन दोनों ही ताजमहल में एक बात कॉमन है और वह यह है कि दोनों ही मोहब्बत की निशानी है। यह उस समय की बता है, जब भारत में ब्रिटिश हुकूमत ने अपने पैर पसारने शुरू ही किए थे। ब्रिटिश सेना के कुछ सिपाही भारत में अलग-अलग राज्यों की सेना में सिपाही के तौर पर तैनात थे।
ऐसा ही एक डच का रहने वाला सिपाही था कर्नल जॉन विलियम हैसिंग। विलियम हैसिंग भारत में अपने परिवार के साथ रहता था। उसे आगरा के किले की देखभाल के लिए सेनापति नियुक्त किया गया था। हैसिंग अपनी पत्नी से बहुत प्यार करता था।
दरअसल, विलियम हैसिंग ने जब अपनी पत्‍नी के साथ पहली बार शाहजहां का बनवाया हुआ ताजमहल देखा था, तब ही तय कर लिया था कि पति-पत्‍नी में जो भी पहले जाएगा, दूसरा उसकी याद में ताजमहल बनवाएगा। पहले विलियम हैसिंग का ही देहांत हो गया। इसलिए उसकी पत्‍नी ने अपने बच्चों के साथ मिलकर लाल पत्थर से ताजमहल से मिलती हुई हू-ब-हू इमारत बनवाई।
