The Mehtab Bagh garden was the last of eleven Mughal-built gardens along the Yamuna opposite the Taj Mahal and the Agra Fort.The garden was built by Emperor Babur (d. 1530).It is also noted that Emperor Shah Jahan had identified a site from the crescent-shaped, grass-covered floodplain across the Yamuna River as an ideal location for viewing the Taj Mahal. It was then created as "a moonlit pleasure garden called Mehtab Bagh." White plaster walkways, airy pavilions, pools and fountains were also created as part of the garden, with fruit trees and narcissus.The garden was designed as an integral part of the Taj Mahal complex in the riverfront terrace pattern. Its width was identical to that of the rest of the Taj Mahal. Legends attributed to the travelogue of the 17th century French traveler Jean Baptiste Tavernier mention Shah Jahan's wish to build a Black Taj Mahal for himself, as a twin to the Taj Mahal; however, this could not be achieved as he was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb.
Frequent floods and villagers extracting building materials nearly ruined the garden. Remaining structures within the garden were in a ruinous state. By the 1990s, the garden's existence was almost forgotten and it had degraded to little more than an enormous mound of sand, covered with wild vegetation and alluvial silt.
मेहताब बाग़ बाग़ों का अंतिम था, जो यमुनानदी के किनारे ताज महल और आगरा क़िला के सामने स्थित मुग़ल काल में बने ग्यारह बागों में से था। इस बाग़ का निर्माण सम्राट बाबर (1530 में निधन) ने कराया था। यह भी कहा जाता है कि सम्राट शाहजहाँ ने यमुनानदी के पार स्थित अर्धचंद्राकार, घास से ढकी बाढ़ की भूमि को ताज महल के दर्शन के लिए आदर्श स्थान के रूप में पहचाना था। इसे फिर "चाँदनी रात का आनंद बाग़, मेहताब बाग़" के रूप में विकसित किया गया। बाग़ में सफेद प्लास्टर से बने रास्ते, हवादार मंडप, तालाब और फव्वारे भी बनाए गए थे, साथ ही फलदार वृक्ष और नर्किसस के फूल लगाए गए थे। बाग़ को ताज महल परिसर के एक अभिन्न भाग के रूप में नदी के किनारे वाले छत के पैटर्न में डिज़ाइन किया गया था। इसकी चौड़ाई ताज महल के बाकी हिस्सों के समान थी। 17वीं सदी के फ्रांसीसी यात्री जीन बाप्टिस्ट तावर्नियर की यात्रावृत्तांत में इस बाग़ से जुड़ी एक किंवदंती है, जिसमें कहा गया है कि शाहजहाँ ने ताज महल के साथ एक काले ताज महल का निर्माण करने की इच्छा जताई थी; हालांकि, यह संभव नहीं हो पाया क्योंकि शाहजहाँ को उनके पुत्र औरंगज़ेब ने बंदी बना लिया था।
बार-बार बाढ़ और गांववालों द्वारा निर्माण सामग्री निकालने के कारण बाग़ लगभग नष्ट हो गया था। बाग़ में शेष संरचनाएँ खंडहर की अवस्था में थीं। 1990 के दशक तक, इस बाग़ का अस्तित्व लगभग भुला दिया गया था और यह अधिकतर रेत के एक विशाल टीले के रूप में तब्दील हो गया था, जो जंगली वनस्पति और जलोढ़ कीचड़ से ढका हुआ था।
