  • American Locomotive Company ceased production of diesel locomotives in 1968. To this day, Alcos hold a place near and dear to American railfans. Their brutish look, ability to throw out steam locomotive type smoke, their distinctive burbling sound, and their underdog role compared to GM and GE power, was a natural draw. Montreal Locomotive Works continued building locomotives on the Alco platform for several more years, but that too is now history. There are pockets of Alcos still working to this day, with the most impressive roster in Scranton Pa. on the Delaware and Lackawanna.
