This video just popped up on my TH-cam recommendations. What a terrific adventure. Bravo --- sincerely. That no engine arrival at Oostende would have aged me for sure. (I think I may have crossed wakes with you twice during your passage home from the Azores --- once as I was heading South to Madeira, and again while I was heading North from the Azores .) Anyway, it was a pleasure being a phantom shipmate with you! Fair winds.
Thank you so much for your kind remarks. Your videos have been a wonderful inspiration for me, going back years till when I was still only dreaming of making an ocean voyage. I hope you don't mind too much that I have shamelessly stolen your "phantom shipmate" term, but it is just such a good term.
This just popped up on my TH-cam too as did yours Patrick many years ago. I’m keen to do what you guys are doing one day. I’m only 40 at the minute. Kids still finishing school, saving a bit more then going to do it. Rest assured a lifelong phantom shipmate. I will cross both your wakes one day fingers crossed. I’ll need a little training first though complete novice. So if you have any space for a guy for a month or two hit me up!!!
Can I be honest? This video is so pure and real! This man deserves a heap of subscribers! No drones! No fancy cameras... I am recording this with my cellphone... LOL .. Love it! Love the guts! And a sailor apologising for the noise? LOL Love you phantom shipmate!
Thank you very much. I would probably have made a video of higher quality, if I had had the equipment and the knowledge to do it, but I had neither. Glad you got through it all the same and even liked the simple format.
I wholeheartedly agree Quintus! The so-called T&A TH-cam channels soon begin to pall, and there is also a feeling that you're male gender if being exploited. I like to see a lovely chassis as much as the next man, but it is not entertaining enough to keep us sustained at the cost of watching more cerebral videos, ie interesting videos! I just found Mads' channel, and have a deja vu that occasionally happens when I find a channel I'm going to be enjoying quite frequently. It would be great to think Mads might like to make more videos, somewhat in the way of Sailing Gently, Chasing Currents and the delightful Wildlings Sailing, all of whom I delight in watching and look forward to 'new video' announcements.
Nice one Mads. Real sailing, real sailor. No beaches, no bikinis, no show boating. However, quietly, understated and with great skill, you prove the old saying, No guts, No glory. Subscribed for the next adventure
What you have done as a solo sailor cruising this way at such a time is not only great and courageous, it is part of a SAILOR TO BE REMEMBERED ! B R A V O !!! Great cruising adventure, very intelligent, to be part of cruising lessons. THANK YOU !
Thankyou from New Zealand! I enjoyed every moment of your journey that you captured so well. Inspirational for us coastal sailors thinking of greater things....!!!!
Thank you! I enjoy Patrick Laine's videos very much. Among other things, it was in his videos I first heard the term "phantom shipmate", which I ought to credit him for.
So happy to have been part of the Phantom crew. Proud of you and the accomplishment of crossing the atlantic solo. I would say it is especially amazing as you had not soloed prior, you learned and overcame so many things during your trip. I'm just a land locked gal in Central Oregon USA, but am so impressed and proud. Thanks for inviting me along. Vicki
congratulations Mads, what a journey. You can be proud about this trip! One thing I noticed is your smile and positive mindset regardless of all the challenges you had! A true sailor!
Thank you for sharing your wonderful adventure with the internet. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole video and would definitely watch more of your adventures!
One word “courageous” Is not just having the boat is having the guts to sail it! Well done, and I hope you do more voyages, just maybe not alone. Congratulations 👏🏽
Thank you for posting and sharing so much information. Very helpful to me as I am preparing to leave tokyo for vancouver across the pacific in a few months time
Really enjoyed watching this video. - I found it refreshing, to watch a no nonsense, straight forward . and Informative video - Its good to know what a mere mortal can achieve and gives hope and dreams to another. Thank you and fair winds for the future
From around 33 - 35 minute mark, your description is so genuine and appreciative, I wish to be in the similar situation when I take my trip. Nicely done.
What an extraordinary video of your epic journey. Great to see so many of your friends and family welcoming you home. I am learning a great deal about not only sailing, but human nature and fortitude in watching the various adventures on here and yours is definitely now up there in the top 5.
Well done! You mentioned that you would like to return to the Azores and I would highly recommend that you do make a return via Madeira would be my recommendation. And plan to take the whole summer as each island has its own charm. Lots more video possibilities! Cheers.
Enjoyable watch. Thanks for sharing your experience. I rather enjoy your good cheer, mellifluous voice and friendly manner. The visuals documentation is quite pleasant, too.
It is really natural, good video with a lot of lessons..As I am planning to cross the Atlantic from west to east ; it was very helpful to see your video.Thanks.
I enjoyed your video and your understated, laid back and somewhat cerebral delivery. Your voyage had a little bit of everything it seems. I enjoyed your little exposition on risk management while sailing. You did a great job narrating the story ... and it was an exciting one.
Cherbourg to Brighton force 9 wind over tide bounced me around like a pea in a whistle. It really steeps up. Good style sailing into ostend. Well. Your a sailor now. Thanks for your wonderfully understated video. Some tales for the "huuga", eh? Skol!
We live in Malibu and I watched your channel making dinner. You started out with the electronics and I thought my husband would really like this, but he was still at work. You did a wonderful job. I was surprised that there actually was no wind. Relieved In a way. I noticed how clean,no extra stuff on your deck. What a wonderful boat. We have a 40Foot Sabre cutter. Thank you, I watched it all the way through.
Thank you. I found the journey from W to E much more varied in terms of wind conditions than the journey from E to W (which is not covered by the video). I rather enjoyed the extra complexity of the weather systems. Fair winds.
Thank you for sharing. This was absolutely fascinating & exciting to watch. thoroughly enjoyed every moment of your journey. Happy to see you made it home safely & without injury. One of the best single handed trips I have ever watched. Bravo!
Hi Mads, I really enjoyed your movie about your Journey back to Danmark! You have a nice way of telling all that happened, also a simple but perfect way of filming. Learned a things or two from your registration so thank you!! Hope to see more of your yourneys so keep up the the good work.. 😂💞
Fabulous and compelling video! Well done for going it alone. Even with crew, sailing puts you in difficult positions. Being solo cranks up the stress and offers little relief. I guess shore side lockdown will provide a well earned rest but may also fill you with burning to do more extended passages next year. Thanks again and stay safe regards Peter
Thank you very much. Yes, I do appreciate a quiet life on land and yes, I'm feeling the pull of the sea again, but I plan to take a gentle season in Danish waters next year.
Mads, I just came across you Video or should I say your adventure... I enjoyed all that you filmed and your own style of narration for the video. Yes you were so very laid back and took all the was thrown at you in grace and style . I enjoyed all your thoughts on how to use those Atlantic Highs and Lows to your best advantage. It was also good to see that beautiful Swan of yours in day to day action while sailing... Fair Winds and Safe Sea's Robert North Star
I have in the past on older boats that ive owend, set up an double boom vang, one side acts as an preventor and the other side acts as the trim. perfect for singlehanded sailing as they can be used from the cockpit. Gerard. Qld Australia.
Thank you for the tip. I've been told that on my type of boat, the preventer should not be closer to the mast than the main sheet fixture, so I run my preventer from there to the bow and back to the cockpit.
We were truly impressed with your video. What an adventure. One experience of a lifetime. I sailed from Brest to the South of Portugal in September 2020 and that, together with RYA sailing classes in Lanzarote, humbled me greatly and made me dream about more. Your video inspired us!
Very nice travel! Thank you. I, too, believe in having additional conventional navigating means, besides the electronic ones. "Welcome, little swallow! Come and stay! You're welcome." Your heart is warm, your soul is kind.
Fantastic stuff. What a wonderful honest warts-and-all video. Truly captivating. The arrival into Ostende sounds like one of those things you practice in your courses (what happens if your engine fails now), but hope you never have to do. Bravo Mads! Bravo!
This is exactly the type of “raw” and personal documentary of a passage that I was looking for. So helpful to understand the weather routing and your ideas of risks and how to mitigate them. For a beginning sailor like me, I appreciated the detail! I didn’t miss the typical bikini, and frankly glad you didn’t wear one.
Thanks Mads nice video, wind sounds were reminiscent of my earlier sailing life. A couple of peaks at the chart now and then would be good. Hope your foot is good now and your back to full speed. If you need any crew keep me in mind. I know what you mean about Cherbourg
Terrific seamanship on a challenging trip. I can't park my boat as well as you seemed to manage to do in Ostend when I have everything working. A really great watch, thank you Mads.
What a treat 1:18:13h of sea, sail and wind. Doubts and decisions. And what an effort for the last stretch, dead engine and a funeral, beautiful! Thanks for the effort recording, editing and posting it here. And where did i hear the term phantom shipmates before......Patrick?:))) But not on the water we all are.
A great Video and very inspiring. It would be great to hear your thoughts on what went well and what you would do differently from your perspective. Do you think the planned weather routing from St Martin was worth while for example? Maybe a follow up video from the comfort of your sofa. Thanks again for sharing your experiences. I learned a lot. Well done 👏 ✔ 👍 👌
Thank you. It was a big experience and I would not have been without it, but had it not been for the Corona virus, which made it impossible for my crew to join me, I would have preferred to have my competent crew with me, both for company and for safety.
A real sailing video without bikini babes. Lovely. Just listening to the story about the arrival without engine sent shivers down my spine. My boat is only 32 feet and I would really hate to try docking under sail and single handed. Great job, thanks for sharing!
I found your video by chance, I even thought it was boring, I'm glad I insisted, I loved it every second! Thanks for the hard work of filming, editing and sharing! Stay safe. Kind regards.
@@MadsTofteChannel I love it! Pity is the confinement in the Azores, that is nine islands, and each island has its charm, who likes to sail, nature at its best, and practically untouchable, safety and healthy food, Azores is a paradise! You just have to hope that mother nature doesn't get violent and keep the volcanoes inactive and don't cause any earthquake(acores besides being volcanic islands, it is a seismic zone, where europe collides with america, for example, we can walk from Europe to america! An island starts in Europe and ends in America)! And of course, the infamous anti-cyclone of the Azores stay calm! One tip: climbing Pico volcano at night and watching the sunrise from above is beautiful! You won't regret a holiday there, nor the family. Do you like hiking? Then there are many trails ahead on each island. It's better than you might think, but, one certainty: the weather is uncertain, in the same 24 hours, you can have the four seasons of the year, which is funny, a warning: you don't want to be at sea in a storm, the waves can exceed 60 meters high! Kind regards.
@@Andre-hi9xn Thank you very much for the tips. I did do some hiking in my younger days, but maybe I should revisit it! The combination of sailing and hiking in the Azores must be quite something.
@@MadsTofteChannel I doubt you'll regret spending an entire summer there! There are small natural beaches where the water is hot, very hot, some at low tide the water leaves the rock at 90 degrees Celcius, many beauties do not come in the tourist guides! The only risk on these islands is an earthquake, a volcano going into activity (and it will be violent) and at any time or a storm, which are always strong(especially in winter and can last several weeks), with waves that can reach 60 meters high (which is rare), but they arrive! When you say the good, you have to warn the bad, right? But you already know that your family is welcome Another small paradise is the Madeira archipelago, although the main island is a very touristic point, but there the trails can already be more radical, because it is and mountainous territory (extinct volcanoes) in the middle there are small picturesque villages, another particularity of this island that does not come in the touristic guides is the house where the Portuguese sailor Cristóvão Colombo was born, his father came from Florence and not him. Kind regards.
I enjoyed your video very much, I know a little bit how that feels....not on a boat but in an 44 year old campervan. I left my family at 7 sept.on my way to the Nordkapp Norway. I made a beautiful trip but i didn't made it into Norway because of Corona, anyway i lived 8 weeks on myself in a campervan, totally different what you did but yeah, very happy to see my family again. very nice video!
Thank you very much. Sounds like a great adventure you undertook! One can't wait for the world to get back to a Corona-free world where travel is less restricted.
Kaka is a beautiful yacht, I own a Swan 441 built in 1979 also designed by Ron Holland, I plan to do similar adventures but heading to Caribbean from UK, but with some crew.
Thank you. Wonderful for you. I sailed with crew on the E to W crossing and it was great. I spent years preparing myself and the boat and still I was surprised by how many challenges of different kinds that turned up during the voyage. They are described in my annotated logbook for the voyage.
This video just popped up on my TH-cam recommendations. What a terrific adventure. Bravo --- sincerely. That no engine arrival at Oostende would have aged me for sure. Thank you. It was a big experience and I would not have been without it, but had it not been for the Corona virus, which made it impossible for my crew to join me, I would have preferred to have my competent crew with me, both for company and for safety.
Just fantastic. Thank you Mads!
Thank you. You are welcome.
A real sailing video without bikini babes. Lovely. Just listening to the story about the arrival without engine sent shivers down my spine. My boat is only 32 feet and I would really hate to try docking under sail and single handed. Great job, thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much - glad you enjoyed it.
I found your video by chance, I even thought it was boring, I'm glad I insisted, I loved it every second! Thanks for the hard work of filming, editing and sharing! Stay safe.
Kind regards.
Glad you enjoyed it after all!
Kind regards.
great work, thank you for sharing your experience!
Glad you enjoyed it!
one of the best documentary i have seen
Thank you.
Respect! Exellent sailing! Nice to watch.
Thank you.
Thank you Mads for sharing your experience, very informative. Ade
You are welcome.
