Sorry to hear that Dan Green passed last week. He's in my personal top 5 for inkers. Dan inked my favorite comics run which is Marc Silvestri's run on Uncanny X-men.

I loved Dan greens inks. His collaboration with Marc’s on x-men was were I first discovered him as a kid. Didn’t realize until much later how much the inks made the art what was so appealing to me.

Thanks for the great video. In 1973 both Chaykin and Green were working at DC on the Burroughs comics and Chaykin drew a comic called Sword of Sorcery. (his crude work was enhanced by inking from the Crusty Bunkers and even Wrightson in one issue. Green's first comics work may have been pencilling and inking a back up strip in Tarzan called Beyond the Farthest Star. Kaluta was drawing the Venus backup in Korak. At the time all of those guys were in their 20's and they sort of looked to each other for inspiration; Green's pencils followed the same approach as the others. There was a short-lived series called Weird Worlds that Green, Kaluta and Chaykin all contributed to. By the end of the run Chaykin had really improved and the last three issues featured his creation Iron-Wolf.

Dan's (excellent) work on people as diverse as Kirby and Sylvestri is a testament to his versatility and artistry. I loved his expressive brushwork on MS and AK.
BTW: Gil Kane used a Flair marker for all but his very early inking and his art has (very sadly) faded into near-oblivion.
EDIT: Chiming back in, Rich: This is such GREAT sampling of Pencilers, too, that it makes for a fascinating retrospective. THANKS!

I thought I already commented on this, but I love it. This is super insightful, hearing your thoughts about his work, and the anecdotes about working over different pencillers.

50:13 this is Jim Lee, his very first fill-in issue. He and Dan didn't quite gel.

So I can absolutely never tell the Kubert Brothers apart, but I can usually tell if it is one of them... is there like a defining characteristic that makes a page recognizable from one or the other? Like is one generally more cartoony than the other? Might be a who cares question, but I'm generally curious bc every time you hit one their pages, you were sure which brother it was. Edit: then of course right after I un pause the vid, you hit the Wolverine and weren't sure which one it was.. lol
