Thank the holy Jesus to have a recording board operator that obviously love Georges playing and knowing his abilities at this time in his career to CRANK his monitors on the soundboard… Bless you whoever you are for this is the one and only time recording in their hayday that George is heard properly. As for the rest of the band, kudos to all of them. There is a buzz now in 2023 listening to this about bands playing absolutely live and was taken back to see Jeff playing the keyboards and not hiring someone to play them, or to run a keyboard track…. They did it all LIVE and that’s what’s probably the most amazing thing…. Totally LIVE mix as it should be. Wish more bands would do the same but unfortunately it’s a new day, age, and so easily done on an Apple Tablet to just fill in all the stuff you want… I hate it!! And will always give bands their kudos to doing it LIVE!!!! People do not give into the backing tracks BS, we have lost so much of what is actually real at live shows!!! This is the way it was meant to be and they knew it nearly 40 years ago…. Enough said!!!!
Sound engineer here (and shredder once upon a time). Here's what's likely going on: Most of the live recordings, especially from the 80's, were probably taken right off the Left and Right outputs from the main mixing console. That guy is mixing for the live show, which in the case of the big 80's bands were arenas, large theaters, amphitheaters.... He's not mixing for the recording. The recording is largely an afterthought in that case. So when you have venues that big, the guys on stage are cranking their amps. That means less of that sound needs to be amplified through the PA system. So the guitars are lower in that mix, which is what's also being recorded. That's also why many of these recordings are "dry" with very little reverb, because the arena is cavernous enough and has enough natural reverb, often times too much. In the case of videos like this, the mix we are hearing is probably mixed separate from the live show. This was either multi tracked and mixed after the fact, or it was a broadcast mix. Either way, THAT engineer is mixing for people NOT in the arena, so that's why it's a much more balanced mix. And whoever mixed this is obviously a fan shredding guitar, plenty of George in this mix!
I have been a DOKKEN Man all my life. I had the best workouts in the gym listening to their music. Lynch & Hendrix are the top 🎸players in my book. 🤘🎶👍🚘
And a very cool dude. I met him at a Pat Travers show in Sacramento sometime around 2006. My buddy was drunk as hell and needed to go outside. Mick and the girl he was with were hanging out by his mini truck and my buddy was hanging all over the side. Mick and I were talking when I recognized who he was. He was totally flattered I knew who he was and remembered the concerts with Dokken. Then his girl is laughing saying my friend was trying to get into the truck. He's at least 250lbs and 6'3". Mick starts laughing when we see the back of his pants and says, "Hahaha...he pissed his pants!" My buddy had pissed himself and had no idea. Then Mick says to me, hey you want a beer? I said cool. Then says, Pat is going on stage. Let's have a beer and go say hi." Mick is the coolest dude I've ever met in a band.

They were falling apart during this time, which is too bad. Back For The Attack album is amazing. But seeing them play at Monsters of Rock was painful. I felt bad for my favorite band. Glad there are good moments like this to see. Thank you. 🤘

There is no music today that compares to the range and diversity of music in the 80s. Long live 80s rock music!

I brought a LYNCH IS GOD banner to the show because as a 17 yo guitar player I believed it. Still to this day I LOVE the man so much. George turned out to be a great man as a person and I could not have been luckier to chase his tones. Still to this day every time I sit and jam through my own real Plexi, as old as me now, its a literal exorcism. You never know whats going to come out, but it always slays. The life Lynch gives these songs is incredible. I grew up in the 80's and respected Dokken, but I recently been listening to them a lot and I'm blown away by Lynch and the sound and style he gave this band in retrospect.

Bringing great stuff that is unmistakably theirs, willing to try some new things while staying true to who they are, always bringing new people in without losing sight of one another, give folks a shot at greatness, share the stage with young faces, ALWAYS keeping the fans in mind, etc. There are a lot of great bands out there. But very few have done as much and continue to bring more forward. Your post is awesome. You had respect. Now you see more than ever how dang good they were. Welcome aboard, captain. ;)
I caught this tour in Houston was sitting low on Georges side ,and when he tossed his Tiger Guitar to his roadie the roadie missed it and it hit a Plexiglass wall and bounced into and out of my hand !!! I was freaked if I had caught it could I run to the car fast enough to not get caught ?? I at least got to touch a Legendary Axe I guess lol Badass show for sure . We left before Aerosmith was half done we went for Dokken , pawned my amp to take my girlfriend at the time and it was worth it !!
Hello Mr. Scary! This is always my go to video for my best memories of Dokken. I was there front row Columbus, Ohio @ The Ohio Center for this tour. You opened for Aerosmith. I've seen you many times. Some of the other shows were with Sammy Hagar, Y&T, & Priest. Hope to see you again!
The best live footage I have ever seen! The whole band is great but George is ON FIRE! What I would give to have been lucky enough to see this performance or George period in the late 80's! Lightning Strikes solo just blows me away!
Dokken = GEORGE. Saw my first Dokken concert at age 8... Loved George ever since. He always had the best, most iconic guitars. I myself have a few of the esp versions, and had a Bengal custom made for me just like his... Finish checked and all...
It's coming back with new blood and some strong stuff out of europe. We need it. Ripe with the same conditions as the 70s that gave birth to the 80s. High gas prices, inflation, whacked out job market, old coot in the house, people need a good time, we need a fashion reset, everyone could use a good party, a lot of junk music on the radio, rock needs a shot in the arm, where are all the guitar heros, etc. lol
During this time Dons vocals were great but Mick and Pilson are sooo good and provide excellent backup vocals. Of course Lynch not only has phenomenal solos but his rhythm guitar riffs were some of my favorites of the time. When I was just learning guitar In my Dreams was not only enough of a challenge but really fun to play. I must have worn my cassette out rewinding it over over trying figure the solo out by ear. Lol. Good times.
I rember back in the 80s, I had a Camaro Z28, my girl, Starla, I had a job, an apartment, a mullet, I used to cruise the strip blastin' Dokken and all the hot girls would turn their heads and look at me.
I was at this show in philly against the stage. They opened for aerosmith. I went to see dokken and wound up getting a drum stick handed to me from Joey Kramer of aerosmith lol. I still have it.
George Lynch breathed life and fire into Dokken. First heard Paris Is Burning on local rock radio and knew this guy's guitar was truly something special.
Eye opening that Don chooses an octave lower on some of the High note portions! Even back then in '87. So basically the studio recording high notes were a One time blessing & that was it. I do Love Dokken. Just realizing that the vocal limitations of DD existed farther back than the last 15 years.
Some of the bands are bringing back cassettes alongside vinyl, custom color vinyl, cd, downloads, signed new release combos, etc. Way too friggin cool. Some of this stuff would probably make a great gift for some of the smarter teens / early 20's folks that love mom & dad's record collection.
What a great show this was I was front and center, it was very loud.What a great hair band they where back around 82 Until 87 they where a hot hair metal band!
What a show caught them in Saginaw mich civic cntr 87 opened for Aerosmith, seen them at Monsters of Rock that same yr. Wow what an Era to grow up as an inspiring guitar player & still am 🤘 50yrs old Strong 🤘

BTW, did you hear the story about the time one of your solos was playing in the background during an Allan Holdsworth Q&A and Allan stopped dead in his tracks and said "now THAT's a great solo!". Is the audio pulled from the board? It's really good. I saw this show in Columbus Ohio in 1987. December, I believe. Don and George were...not talking...at the time. George played the whole show from behind his amps.
A truly criminally underrated band of the 80’s,90’s. It’s both awesome and sad to relive Don’s incredible vocals here. In that era, he was easily top 10

Dokken (with George Lynch) was often overlooked when influential 80s bands are talked about. Lynch made sure to get Eddie's advice & approval. He is a top 5 guitarist from that era.
VH Rising talks about George and Ed being buds early on coming up starting out. Differing versions on which one stumbled on the two handed tapping. One had George seeing a blues player do it, told EVH he had to check it out, and take it because George wanted to go a slightly different direction developing his style. Cool read.

Hello Mr. Scary! This is always my go to video for my best memories of Dokken. I was there front row Columbus, Ohio @ The Ohio Center for this tour. You opened for Aerosmith. I've seen you many times. Some of the other shows were with Sammy Hagar, Y&T, & Priest. Hope to see you again!
The whole band was amazing, and give some credit to Don Dokken who was FANTASTIC on the vocals!
The best live footage I have ever seen! The whole band is great but George is ON FIRE! What I would give to have been lucky enough to see this performance or George period in the late 80's! Lightning Strikes solo just blows me away!

Absolutely love this I was there for this tour when they were opening for Aerosmith. 4 times I got to see Dokken Loved every minute of it.
Dokken = GEORGE. Saw my first Dokken concert at age 8... Loved George ever since. He always had the best, most iconic guitars. I myself have a few of the esp versions, and had a Bengal custom made for me just like his... Finish checked and all...

It's coming back with new blood and some strong stuff out of europe. We need it. Ripe with the same conditions as the 70s that gave birth to the 80s. High gas prices, inflation, whacked out job market, old coot in the house, people need a good time, we need a fashion reset, everyone could use a good party, a lot of junk music on the radio, rock needs a shot in the arm, where are all the guitar heros, etc. lol

During this time Dons vocals were great but Mick and Pilson are sooo good and provide excellent backup vocals. Of course Lynch not only has phenomenal solos but his rhythm guitar riffs were some of my favorites of the time. When I was just learning guitar In my Dreams was not only enough of a challenge but really fun to play. I must have worn my cassette out rewinding it over over trying figure the solo out by ear. Lol. Good times.
I rember back in the 80s, I had a Camaro Z28, my girl, Starla, I had a job, an apartment, a mullet, I used to cruise the strip blastin' Dokken and all the hot girls would turn their heads and look at me.
Baske in those memories, Brother. Know that you lived it-that magical time on Earth whereas music was a vital force driving us on. ☮️

I was at this show in philly against the stage. They opened for aerosmith. I went to see dokken and wound up getting a drum stick handed to me from Joey Kramer of aerosmith lol. I still have it.

Saw them in 1985 when they opened for Dio Last in Line tour. Was blown away by George! Then Dio. One of the best concerts ever for $13.50
George Lynch breathed life and fire into Dokken. First heard Paris Is Burning on local rock radio and knew this guy's guitar was truly something special.
Don had one of the best vocals in 80s metal. Damn I loved being a teen in the 80s !

So basically the studio recording high notes were a One time blessing & that was it. I do Love Dokken. Just realizing that the vocal limitations of DD existed farther back than the last 15 years.
George Michael and Steve Perry did the same in their later years. Aging and wear and tear of touring I guess.
Oh for my young glory days....Top 3 favorite guitar players and guitar sound...play these cassettes until the tape wore out.
Some of the bands are bringing back cassettes alongside vinyl, custom color vinyl, cd, downloads, signed new release combos, etc. Way too friggin cool. Some of this stuff would probably make a great gift for some of the smarter teens / early 20's folks that love mom & dad's record collection.

What a show caught them in Saginaw mich civic cntr 87 opened for Aerosmith, seen them at Monsters of Rock that same yr. Wow what an Era to grow up as an inspiring guitar player & still am 🤘 50yrs old Strong 🤘
I was there! Paid for seats near the front on your side George. Dokken was opening for Aerosmith that night. Phenomanal concert!

BTW, did you hear the story about the time one of your solos was playing in the background during an Allan Holdsworth Q&A and Allan stopped dead in his tracks and said "now THAT's a great solo!". Thought you'd enjoy that. :)

I saw this show in Columbus Ohio in 1987. December, I believe. Don and George were...not talking...at the time. George played the whole show from behind his amps.
A truly criminally underrated band of the 80’s,90’s. It’s both awesome and sad to relive Don’s incredible vocals here. In that era, he was easily top 10

hehe me n the guy that taught me to play guitar his name John something er other road tripped that show (Oakland) in his tiny yellow Honda Civic lol, got lost about nine times once we got to Oakland it was awesome 2 lil white punks in a motorcycle engine powered Honda lost in Oaktown.... Great show tho...

Dokken (with George Lynch) was often overlooked when influential 80s bands are talked about. Lynch made sure to get Eddie's advice & approval. He is a top 5 guitarist from that era.
VH Rising talks about George and Ed being buds early on coming up starting out. Differing versions on which one stumbled on the two handed tapping. One had George seeing a blues player do it, told EVH he had to check it out, and take it because George wanted to go a slightly different direction developing his style. Cool read.
80s music was the best . To this day that's all I listen to. George is going to need a new 'stack' after this show.,probably a new guitar also.
