    Sawyer, 200 thousand is literally nothing. That's roughly how much Indonesian has to pay when we break the law too. Helmets are a must, it's a safety requirement.

    let me clarified something..... ( im from indonesia and i do lived in bali times to times). foreigner can drive motor bike and cars, but you guys need the appropriate license car license wouldn't work as motor bike and vice versa. NOT Wearing helmets or not waring the appropriate helmets is a crime. if u get caught doing those stuff and the police ask for bribe just point ur camera and start recording and tell them u will send this video to the KPK ( which is the indonesian anti corruption orginazation ) other then that ASK THEM TO WRITE A TICKET, and pay the em legaly. Enjoy bali.... cheers

      Thing is is that every country has its ups and downs.. and sure these police officers may have done something that you might not like or agree, but it is stated in the Indonesian law that you HAVE to own an Indonesia driver license in order to use a motor cycle (new law) due to the increasing number of motor cycle accidents caused by tourists.

  • @chobono
    @chobono 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Louis, thank you for including Sawyer's account of him being extorted by the local police in this video. Exposing acts of corruption is necessary for something to be done about it. I'm a local from Jakarta myself, but as many of my fellow Indonesians and third-world country viewers have pointed out, this is (tragically) a common occurrence where we're from.
    Mind you though, Sawyer was violating our traffic law which requires motorcyclists to use helmets (the maximum fine for this is Rp250,000) and obtain a local license for motorcycles (there is a procedure for this in Bali which will grant tourists a license for 30 days). The police officer, however, was extorting him by demanding that he pay on the spot - which is illegal as the police may only write you up a ticket (a blue ticket if you admit to wrongdoing and want to pay the fine through a bank, a red one if you want to dispute the incident in court). The fact that the officer fined Sawyer with the maximum amount and proceeded to take Rp200,000 from his wallet, proved that this was just extortion.
    Bali and Indonesia as a whole is a beautiful place filled with very friendly and hospitable people. I'm sorry this had to happen on your second visit here (I recall you've visited here before when you were younger). Corruption is rampant because of the poor remuneration of our state employees and police, which is sad, but the nation is working to fix this we assure you. I hope the fond memories both you and Sawyer form here will outweigh this incident.
    That said, welcome to Indonesia, have fun and humor us by putting on a helmet.

    Sawyer was dumb to not be wearing a helmet. While it sounds like they were pretty abrasive, it's pretty well known if you get caught without a helmet there they are going to pull you over and try get a bribe.

      Yeah they do have fake police as well, but either way even the real police are going to target you, especially if you're on a moped not wearing a helmet. Policemen there are mostly in it for the bribes they can get from tourists.

  • @aaronmoiche330
    @aaronmoiche330 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Dear Sawyer, idk if you'll read this but that is something that also happens and is very common in africa, it's true that you sorta broke the rules by not wearing the helmet and all that and you could get into some trouble because of it but for the most part police in countries like that have the upper hand and they decide what to do based on what they feel like doing. It's like when you're a kid and your sibling does something you know they'll get into trouble for if your parents find out so you tell them to do something for you or give you something in exchange for your silence, that's just how it goes and they get away with it because it's completely off record.
    Moral of the story is that countries like those have different rules from those you might be used to and they work differently so you mostly have to deal with it as best as you can. Hope it helps mate ;)

    Well the police can't actually give him a penalty for not having an Indonesian Drivers License, even if they did can, its only for Rp 250.000 (around $25). He can give sawyer a penalty for not wearing his Helmet though, for around Rp 250.000 (around $25) for each person. so remember to wear your helmet bro.

    • @Rukiakun
      @Rukiakun 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it's actually talked about all over online if you don't have say an international license bla bla not wearing helmet in the more touristy areas if they catch you or see you're a tourist they'll pull you over and try to get whatever they can off you just funny they didn't at least do a little research on that :\ you can actually apply for a balinese license too for 20~$ i believe. that would ensure 0 problems with the police once they see it

    anyway welcome to Bali, Indonesia, hope both of you enjoy this wonderful island,
    i guess i would like to recommend one of the most good local cuisine Indonesian foods in Bali, served with buffet style, its named Warung Bambuku its in Sunset Road, North Kuta, beside the Trans Hotel, you will find a small traditional style restaurant with colorful windows you can see from the outside, and thats the place, or ofcourse you can google it :) Try the rendang meat, it taste awesome! ;)
    Anyway, enjoy your trip and adventure in Bali, love this episode in Bali, and yeah be careful with some cops in Bali, sometimes they play tricks with foreign tourist.. if you still have a time in Indonesia, visit Yogyakarta city its awesome city too, im ready to take you around there, Cheers ;)

      Very true. It is not difficult to get an international license before you begin your travels!

    Those fruits are snake skin fruits. They are the texture of an apple but are a little chalky. They taste like a mixture between a pineapple and an apple. I sort of like them but I would definitely recommend trying them for something new!

    yeah, the exact same thing happened to my family when we were in bali, but we were in a long (5-6 hr) taxi to a different part of the country. Happens sometimes in thailand too, although probably not as often.

    I dig Sawyer's thinking on the tattoo/life. Also, that's a good rationalization for dealing with the theft he experienced.

    Hi Louis, welcome to Bali, Indonesia!
    If you love coffee you should definitely trying out Seniman Coffee Studio in Ubud. And i do recommend to go out stay for a night to Nusa Penida for an amazing view. And if you love waterfalls you could go to Buleleng area bcs there are tons of beautiful waterfalls in there like Aling-Aling Waterfall (you could jump from a waterfall cliff and you could SLIDING ON A WATERFALL (like literally waterfall sliding) too in here ive tried it once lol im not even kidding you should check it out) and Tibumana Waterfall. Oh and about the police, as an Indonesian citizen, I'm really sorry because what the police did is certainly not right about the license but you did break the laws in Bali without wearing any helmets. By the way, you should check @explorebali in instagram for tons of amazing destination and @balifoodies in instagram for tons of amazing restaurant!
    Anyway, enjoy Bali! 😊

    I'm a local (balinese) and that happened to me before too, you do have to pay that much for not wearing a helmet if you dont want your license to be taken (its so complicated to get it back). But when sawyer said they snatch the money 👎🏼 And the fruit you are asking is called salak/snakefruit! You should def try it 👌🏼

  • @BA-dg5hx

    The snake skin fruit is actually called Salak or snake fruit and is delicious. I tried it when I was in Bali. This fruit was new to me so I gave it a try when in Bali after our tour guide recommended it to us. Great vlog as always!!

    Police in Bali does the same thing to locals too. It happened to my friends when they drove around Ubud back in 2014 if I am not mistaken. They want that same amount of money because what my friend (who drove) had done anything wrong at that time. Same as Sawyer she refused to pay, they grabbed her driver license which is not a Bali drivers' license (Jakarta) with the nastiest comments "tone" (because in Balinese they did not understand) from them. Gees. Like Sawyer she took the high road and enjoy the rest of holidays there.

    That fruit name's salak, and it's sweet/sour (because there are variation of salak, I guess it was salak bali (sour), not salak pondoh from yogyakarta, java (sweet)). You guys should try it!
