    UPDATE!
    There is now (Feb 16) official 120hz support!
    Clarifying here because the last second 120hz realization messed up the video's flow:
    The Pro Controllers don't solve the swingbug issue, but they make it more playable. I'm not sure if it's because of their weight or if they actually have less predictions. Whether you use the regular or Pro controllers, I highly recommend setting your refresh rate to 120hz, even if it means you have to sacrifice visual quality.

    Some of my observations: The battery indicator is probably greatly optimistic. The controllers come with alkaline batteries, which have a high internal resistance, which means that when there's high current draw, the voltage dips radically. Mine were showing 50%-60% when the tracking started dropping in Beat Saber and I think it's because the current draw of the vibration motors when you slice bricks. I switched to NiMH batteries and it solved the problem. I'm still going to recharge the batteries early even though NiMH has a much lower internal resistance, which should eliminate sudden drop-outs. The alkalines I pulled out at 50%-60% had a voltage of 1.35V (with zero load), which is probably still OK on a very low current device, but is as good as dead for higher current applications. So...if you get a Quest 3, make sure you have fresh batteries (preferably rechargeables) before the original batteries drop below 70%.
    If the controllers go outside the range of the headset cameras, they track purely using the motion sensors. That's why you have have the controller right behind your back and still wave it around, but it's going to be less accurate (and potentially drift pretty quickly due to cumulative errors).
    If you have long/puffy sleeves, I guess it's possible that the sleeve could block the tracking dot on the handle. Again, the motion sensors will cover for that most of the time, but it could cause reduced tracking.
    I'm just a Beat Saber noob, but even I was able to tell that I was failing because of the controllers (running out of juice) and not my ability to play.

Wouldn't it be cool if the Quest 3 could easily swap between Q2 controllers, touch plus controllers, and pro controllers? Too bad Meta didn't implement that.

    Very cool video!
    I actually had no idea that there is a correlation between fps and swing "quality". I'm nowhere near competitive Beat Saber gaming, nor do I strive to be, but things you said definitely open my eyes on some stuff. I was always running default FPS in Link, which I think is 72 and I attributed different feel between Quest standalone and PCVR on latency alone. But I did notice on my PCVR recordings that the saber is not glued to my hands, especially visible on faster swings, while f.e on some E+ YT players it seems more in place and now it makes me think it is because of that prediction aspect that you mention which happens more on low fps. I have to test this.
    Great stuff, keep it up!

    Quest Link, Virtual Desktop, and Steam Link. You've got three options for streaming games and everyone seems to have different results and a preference with each. Quest Link, if you can get it working, has a lot of bitrate options you can unlock. Virtual Desktop seems to be a lot more stable and, while bitrate options are more limited, you get a lot more codec control, allowing you to choose what's best for movement, color accuracy, etc., based on what you're wanting to play. Steam Link is a pretty good option, but still a work in progress. It isn't buggy and looks/feels fine, but I would like to see more controls added over time, such as higher bitrate options and foveated rendering options (specifically to disable or reduce it).
    Running Virtual Desktop, HVEC 10bit @ 300mbps, 120hz, games look as good (if not better) as they did on my last native SteamVR headset.
    So if you're having trouble with Quest Link, I'd suggest trying one of the other two options. One of the three will end up working better, you just have to figure out what's best for your setup. Personally all three work fine for me.

    The tracking issues definitely detract from the experience, I agree. Besides laggy positioning, I also get occasional intermittent offset that can be drastic. I assumed it was inherent to the HW because I can see a noticeable tracking delay even in passthrough. It's tempting to repurchase the standalone version of BS to see if it's better for me.
    That said, I play BS for a pretty long time, and I doubt I would be able to get what I want out of the standalone game anyway. My main issue is that I want the best sound quality I can get, so I use a pair of Nuraphones. I don't recall if the Quest allows you to use BT headphones for standalone (I don't think it does), but even if it did the battery draw would be terrible, and its battery life is already pretty limited. So due to the audio quality demand, and a desire for as long a play time as possible, I still play over link cable in PCVR despite the tracking issues.

    Warning, long stupid post:
    I had a original Oculus v1 and when I played Beat Saper on Expert and Hard that I thought was best for cardio and motion training, Expert and Expert+ often feel like It was not good for the joints. But I often got great score with full combo and on one tune I was placed 3,000 on that Oculus list that I think is rather few players. Then I fell ill and was unable to play for 6 month or so, then I got a Quest 2 and I started to play again.
    The problem is, I suck. I can a tune like Rum 'n Base in me head on Hard and Expert, the motion is almost automatic, but suddenly I get the feeling that my controller is not where my hand is and I can miss the simplest blocks, and in a new song like Power of the Blade I can never take the fast up and down lines, feel like I am on the beat, but in the game it looks like the controller is not moving as I do, like it take a much smoother path.
    How can I see if it is me or the controllers that is off, I use 120 Hz setting that I think is just 90 Hz in the headset, and I use rechargeable 1.2 volt batteries and not standard 1.5 V.
    So can you use your skill to see if there is any difference between 1.2 V and 1.5 V batteries.
    If Smart led lights can affect tracking for it may not be 50 or 60 Hz flickering as incandescent bulbs.
    If IKEA batteries are a bit too small and may move in the Quest controllers.
    Then give tips for folk like me that suck, I before played with a rubber grip that had a snug fit, now with the borrowed headset I learned the two and three finger grip, what other things can I do as a noobs to be tiny bit better and be unable to blame the hardware?

Might be my particular controller pair has a qc issue, but they stop tracking when my controllers are at the sides of my body or above my head. I feel on many songs I need to shake my head back and forth to face the blocks I am cutting in order for the cut to register.
    No, I don't think it is because I actively look at the blocks, making my cuts more accurrate, because I feel like I don't do that. I keep looking at the same spot in the background, just turning my head so the cameras can see the controller.

    1.) "swing bug" is 100% not related to framerate. You are wrong there.
    The games do not poll tracking relative to framerate. They also predict EVERY MOVEMENT because the controller is always behind of the rendered image on the headset. Oculus has the best tracking prediction of anyone which is why it has always been better for beat saber.
    2.) Image compression is because you have an AMD GPU and a lower end one at that. If you had an NVIDIA GPU you would see minimal/no compression artifacts in beat saber.
    3.) Quest link cable can 100% charge the headset. You need a USB port which can deliver the correct amount of power.
    One thing which does affect tracking is frametimes so you should keep them as low as possible. That means turning down any graphics settings to the lowest level.

    • @noam15A
      @noam15A  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      1) It is, and it's widely accepted in the Beat Saber community. You can even see my example in this very video. You mention that the issue is frame times which is 100% correct, but frame times are directly affected by your framerate.
      2) That's just wrong? Standalone headsets compress the video signal, no matter what GPU they're running on. You can even fine tune the bitrate and codec used with Oculus Debug Tool, so I doubt there is a difference between GPUs, and even if there is one, Nvidia GPUs will still compress. Maybe you misunderstood and thought that I am experiencing unusable amounts of compression, that is not the case, I am just very sensitive to compression artifacts. (also calling 5700 XT low end lmao)
      3) Normal USB ports are limited to 5W which is not enough to keep charge while running the Q3 at 90hz or 120hz. There are special cables/ports that can do more than 5W.

    • @user-ke2up6mr8t
      @user-ke2up6mr8t 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      1)Frametimes in VR are not tied to framerate. It seems that you want the lowest latency possible and in VR the frames are rendered as fast as possible. oculus also uses something called "phase sync" where they sync the tracking to the frame times so they pull the lowest latency possible.
      2) Nvidia GPU are 5x better for oculus link. At high bitrate the compression artifacts are almost nonexistent. AMD has always been a bad choice for oculus link. It's recommended that nobody buys an AMD GPU if intending to ever do VR. If you say you can see subtle compression artifacts over AMD then you'll see none with an nvidia gpu.
      3) If you had an nvidia gpu (say like 20 series or 10 series) you would know that the usb port delivers 27 watts. Many motherboards deliver the same power

      I'm still doubtful about the GPU vendor affecting bitrate because you can set them to the same codecs and bitrate, at which point the only difference would be latency, not visual quality.
      It's true that type C ports on Nvidia GPUs have a higher power output, but most Link users either don't have USB on their GPU or aren't connected to it.

    • @user-ke2up6mr8t
      @user-ke2up6mr8t 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The encoders in the GPU are not the same. They don't tell you this but there is a clear difference running an AMD gpu and an NVIDIA one to where it is basically ridiculous to even attempt to use an AMD GPU for oculus link. There is a crazy difference.
      As far as frametime being 1/framerate that is not exactly correct. What oculus link does is they monitor how long the frames are taking to render and they sync the tracking and rendering as close to render time as possible. So instead of computing the frames at the beginning of the frame, they render as close to being sent over link. And by doing that you get better input latency, better tracking, depending on GPU load.@@noam15A
