I just left a public library where I worked in Circulation and Children's Services for 17 years. My primary responsibilities were customer service and programming. I'm glad you pointed out that we do so much more than read all day.

I'm a research library assistant as my second job (best six hours of the work week I tell you that) and my full time boss asks me sometimes if I'm reading at work there and I just (bluntly) say "no it's a real job, I do have to do work."

@@thomaswhite3059What does the research part of your job entail? Also do you do programming and IT? That part seems a tad daunting.

Awesome video!! I just finished my MLIS last year so this is my first year as a librarian but I've been working in libraries for about 7 years altogether. At the job I'm at now, I've been there for 5 years and for the last two when I was working on my degree I was able to work as a Library Associate but I still did everything the Librarians did and it was such a huge help in school especially having that practical knowledge.
Maybe you can do a video on what to expect from a librarian. What we do and what we cannot do (such as give legal advice) etc. Protecting patron privacy is also a big topic too. Can't wait to see more of your videos on being a Librarian!

I never realized how much the young adult section has grown, since the 80s and 90s. You're right. I think I remember, when I was younger, the books were either in the children's section, or they were in the adult section.
When I volunteered recently in a public library, there was a YA room, for that category, as well as a separate section for children. I don't recall seeing Librarians on the floor, though. There were more library assistants around.
I'm thinking of applying to an MLIS program, but I'm just worried if I don't find a job, when I'm done. I will be 40 this year, so time is ticking. Gotta find a career!

I do, however, love my part time job in circulation at a nearby library and have been thinking of getting my MLIS with a certificate in Youth Services. More and more these days, I’m starting to think librarianship is the right course for me and this pretty much confirms it. Thank you!

Hey Claire, Thanks for sharing this comment. I totally resonate. I am currently a Teaching Assistant and I'm realizing that I don't really feel keen on doing this as my career. Teaching full time is so stressful. But I love working with kids. The youth services certificate is something I had no idea about. So I really appreciate you mentioning this. I am currently applying for my masters, definitely nervous to do this change. But change is always good! Wish you well on your path to librarianship!

Context: Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey are going to see Fiona’s parents and they’re in a cart vehicle. Donkey is in the back making the same noise you’re making with his mouse. And that aggregates and annoys Shrek even more until he rages. 😂

It's very competitive. I've seen some libraries require MLS for an assistant! I got my library assistant position by volunteering for 7 months. 7 months of my life, unpaid, to get the lowest position at my library. What a world we live in. Libraries heavily favor existing employees/volunteers for new positions and position changes. I'd recommend anyone to volunteer for a few months to see if they like the library vibe. You aren't doing exactly the same work as an assistant, but it's pretty close, at least in my case.

    Great channel-love your vids!
I’ve been working as a legal researcher at my company since 2000 and went back to school in 2010 to get my MLIS in the evenings and weekends. Took me five years, but I can now insist on that librarian title at work, even though they want me to use Senior Information Acquisition Specialist instead. (Ugh!j
Biggest surprise for me as a new grad student in my mid-40s was how much college had changed since the ‘80s, as well as the shock of my first day of class and realizing I was closer in age to my prof than any of my fellow students. But I really loved that program and learned so much!
I might not be using the degree in a standard way, but it is great having it as a backup in case I ever get laid off from my corporate job. I would love to go back to a public library, but I haven’t worked at one since 1992. I did tailor my degree in the public library track, so maybe if nothing else, I can use it to volunteer after retirement if I last that long in my current job.

Sorry if this has been asked before and I missed it, what school did you attend for your master's program?

I enrolled in USC’s (University of SC) because it was all online and I was able to work full time and go to school full time.

i just got my MLS in sept.2019. What are some job resources you find/found helpful during your job hunt? I recognize they're so many jobs out of state but to stay within a local area, its harder :(

Unfortunately I didn’t have to do a job hunt. I was already working for the library when I received my job. Trying checking out your state library association and they should have some job listings

I would also like to hear what you learned in the children's and YA classes. 😁 And, I remember a while back you said you get a lot of reading done at your job, but it seems that is not the case now. Or is it? How have your work responsibilities changed since you began pursuing your master's?

Oh, boy. The stereotype of librarians sitting around reading all day 🙄 I did actually do a lot of reading when I was a tech at a very quiet library branch, but once I became a librarian, that time disappeared. Required reading largely became an at-home thing.
