- Hey everybody! Here's new video in the series where I focus what it's like to be a librarian. This first video will discuss what it's like in the day of the life of a librarian. Please keep in mind that this is solely based on my personal experience and doesn't speak to the experience of every librarian. This was really interesting. I work fulltime in a public library and part time in an academic library. I find working in a public library more satisfying because i'm helping people in the community that really need help. As an introvert it is super draining though, especially working the frontlines. I'm talking to people from the moment I walk in until the time I leave. I don't think people realize what a social job being a librarian is. I love tech services/cataloging and processing interlibrary loans, which I do at my academic library job.
lepetitecherie it is draining! Especially when you keep such a positive attitude all day. My manager is all about us taking time to ourselves and taking sufficient breaks because it can be difficult.

I asked my Librarian to help me with a resume and he refused! I thought that was incorrect and I am so glad to hear that it was not normal.
I would like to volunteer at a library and maybe work there one day. I have had learning disabilities my whole life, It’s held me back and I have a lot of fear about it, I’m embarrassed at how little I know and how slow I can be when it comes to learning new things. But a goal for myself is to volunteer for the library this year! I want to press past my weakness and try to work towards my dream, my struggles have giving me a passion for books, learning, and educating people. Thanks for the video.
Definitely volunteer love! And please don’t let your learning disability stop you. If you would like to work at the library one day then go for it!

My dream career! Unfortunately I worked in factories all my life and I'm over 50! It would be great to have such diversity in my workday!!!! You are awesome! I wish I could go back in time and finish college!
It is never too late to do a career change. We have people on our staff now that started out volunteering, then working as a paid shelver part-time, then working at the desk part-time, then working full-time, then supervising. My former branch manager found the profession in her 50s. A lot of us find this as a second or third act. All that to reiterate...It is never too late✨

OMG !!! I am so glad that I found your channel!!!! I love the Being A Librarian 101 videos. I will be starting the MLIS program in August of 2020 and I am super excited!!!! I was not happy to find out that I had to go back to school again because I already have two Masters Degrees. I honestly thought that I could just change careers...........................but that did not happen so......I am just rolling with the punches and I am looking forward to this new adventure. I am very interested in working in the public library................... unfortunately in my area there are not many people of color who work in our public library system maybe 3 or 4 in the whole system (that I have seen) . I hate that because I would love to just chat and ask questions to see what there experiences are like. Your channel just popped up on my feed and I'm enjoying your reviews. I am finally retiring next month as an academic librarian. I always laughed when people would comment that I must love my job because I get to read books all day. LOL! I haven't read a book at work in the past decade (academic librarians don't do reader's advisory, we just read reviews to recommend to faculty). My current position running a Research and Learning Services department is more like a management job at a company, including hiring/managing staff and schedules, data analytics, database evaluations, information literacy, collection development, access services, copyright and fair use consultant, the list is long and not very sexy. My first job as a 16 year old was at a public library because I so loved books. In my retirement, I hope to spend more time at my local library with my beloved books. Yahoo!
I almost went into Library science, watching this still kind of makes me wish I did.
I know I'm a little late for this video but I just wanted to say that I'm currently working toward my MLIS and have worked in my local public library for approximately four years. After watching your video you seem like a confident and thorough instructor. I think you would be fantastic teaching MLS curriculum :)

I love the story you shared about the woman who got a job after you helped her write cover letters. I’m considering a career change, and if I choose to become a librarian I’ll have a lot of work cut out for me. But hearing about some of the things a librarian does, it makes me think it would be worth the time and effort.
I'm so glad your channel popped up in my recommendations! I'm in my third semester of library school (I graduate in May) and am concentrating on youth services too. I just started my first public library job in the children's department and we use still use Dewey (mainly for non-fiction). My program gave us a brief overview of it but I still don't know it off the top of my head. I mainly do check-in/check-out, reader's advisory, shelving, programming, and displays. I really love doing displays and reader's advisory especially when I can find the perfect book for someone. In undergrad, I worked as a page/aide in the academic library and in a peer coach in the career center helping other students with their resumes and cover letters. It's cool to see that those skills can be useful in a public library.

Libraries and librarians are awesome!! My sister works at library, and it's always so interesting to hear about her job. Like your library system, hers also doesn't use the Dewey Decimal system, which I think makes total sense. It's incredible all the different services and programing public libraries provide. It's actually crazy how much librarians do with such specific, sometimes rather complex skillsets. I was so ignorant of this. This was super interesting.
I was a library page part time at a public library when I was in high school, so I mostly did shelving, shelf reorganization, and putting stickers on the laminated books. Our library organized by category for fiction and Dewey Decimal for nonfiction. I'm kinda interested in how libraries organize their material. I recently heard about some indigenous American collections using the Brian Deer classification system, and I just didn't know there were different ways to categorize.
I’ve never heard of that classification system before. I’ll have to look into it.

I have worked in libraries of all kinds (public, academic, special collections). My duties tended to be back end stuff in the academic and special collections spaces. In the public library position I held, my daily tasks varied a bit, depending on what I was needed for. I was also around patrons a lot more consistently at my public library position.

I worked at my academic library in college. We used the Lib. of Congress system... but yeah, I was always singing the alphabet song in my head to shelve, especially early on!

In this world that has automated technology takes over everything, hopefully that arts, bookstores and mostly libraries won't extint cause this is what we really need. The peaceful environment of every corner, the smell of bookpages, their textures and the surprising booktitles in every bookshelves that we only see...
Sounds like an amazing job! Hopefully, my local library will reopen soon. Libraries (and book stores) have always been a second home for me. I do miss the old card catalog and the pocket in the back of the book with the date stamp. I always lose the printed receipts now. :)
Thanks for the insights. I was wondering how much programming librarians do. That sounds intimidating to me. Thank you for doing it! Long ago I worked at an elementary school library as a computer lab assistant and front desk assistant. I'll never forget that job. The elementary school was part of the college I went to, so I got to see so many teachers working at all levels, students, professors, and very experienced teachers. So fun.

I am new to seeing your videos. I love that you took the time to talk about this! I love libraries so it was like living through you hearing about what life is like as a librarian. You gave me a reality check because I did not think it was so hands on with other people i.e helping someone update their job resume. I have a Library Tech Certificate, and I've only worked in academic libraries. Since I got laid off, I've been applying at public libraries, which would be a new experience for me. Even though I am not and will never be a librarian, you've given me topics to study so I can prepare for the job I want as a library assistant. Thank you very much for sharing your vocational expertise with us as well as your love of books!
Your job sounds incredible - the library you work at sounds a lot better resourced than my local (which is still pretty great). It is awesome that you can take the time to help people gain employment.

Great video! ❤ I've volunteered at my local library for over a year now. It's a very small library and I've mostly been helping out with shelving and helping people with the new self service machines. None of the staff are trained librarians so when I ask them about the processes behind the things that they do, they don't always know!

Again great to hear your perspective! I worked as a student assistant at a public library as my first job and it was primarily checking in books, loading and unloading bins, and sorting and shelving books. So much shelving, I think my record was 5 full carts in a 4 hr shift! You're right that over time it becomes super natural to shelve, so natural I would regularly have dreams about shelving! Interesting how you have completely moved away from Dewey decimal, we had too except for nonfiction and manga/comics (I think because comics are so difficult to organize in general? I don't know).
Arthur S-M yessss someone who understands the shelving process!! Lol it is super natural and I used to always challenge myself to see how much I could shelve in a shift. And yes! Graphic novels and comics are super hard to organize. In fact, it took us a while to figure out how to categorize our books and we still haven’t perfected it yet.

i really wish it was easier to become a librarian - i understand why they want a masters degree but i just dont have the money to do that much school and the job wont really pay for it :/ i applied as a page and im hoping i can get it to see if its something i really want to do, but from your series it makes me think i want to more and more every video i watch

I worked in a library in undergrad (said the alphabet every time) and when I went to grad school (applied at the Hollywood library), I was so jealous of the library science people. That's fascinating about moving away from the Dewey Decimal system. It's been so long since I've been to a public library. I've been in an academic library for so long so I'm used to the Library of Congress system and so I'm very rusty on the Dewey Decimal one, lol so I guess it's just as well to change the system to more like what you get in a bookstore :)

"There's a method to our madness" - Library Science in a nutshell
Dewey Decimal is the worst!!! I hate that my boss won't let me convert our non-fiction section. It's frustrating as heck and no one can every find anything. Thank you for mentioning this access system--it sounds awesome. I may have better luck selling that than the LC system...
I work quarter time at a tiny (600 sq ft) public library and three-quarters time at the ILL department of a three-story academic library-- no LIS degree, but I've been working around libs since I was a kid (11-ish) so the experience is there. I agree that the little victories at the public lib is absolutely the best. Every reluctant reader you can entice into falling in love with a book is such a victory. And geeking out with my younger patrons who also love the "a little bit scary" genre is the absolute best.
That ridiculously chaotic day-to-day is so the truth. At my ILL department there's stuff that needs to happen (queue sorting, scanning, incoming/outgoing mail, etc) and then just the weirdest things like finding lost books, helping brainstorm displays, tracking down foreign language speakers to help us with Cyrillic, Hebrew, Korean, and Arabic requests, stuff like that.
My public lib is so small that there's just the two of us--my boss, the lead librarian of some thirty-plus years, orders new books and supplies, does all the kids programming, and socializes up a storm with all of our patrons. I process new books from covering to cataloging, manage the blog and social media, help with displays particularly for the YA and adult sections (we have a volunteer who does the kids room displays) and generally just try to keep the place organized and picked up. We split book recommendations along interest lines--she does adult fiction, picture books, biographies, non-fiction, and I specialize in genre stuff, YA, middle grade, and graphic novels. We share reshelving and circulation duties. And oddly she does more ILL than me? It's a strange sort of system for a library open only 16 hours a week, but it seems to work, for now.

Hi! Loving the Librarian 101 series. I’ve been a YS Associate for about a year and planning to get into a MLIS soon! I do a little bit of everything in my position so I’m happy to hear what most of you were saying I am familiar with. I think the only thing I still have yet to get my hands in is Outreach specifically with youth. If you have any input on your experience with that, that would be helpful!

I hope your tips make me get my job today, I have an interview
I’m a part time public service clerk at a pretty large public library. I shelved, set up programs and pulled holds for almost 4 years as a page, and then after we pulled the holds our customer service/circulation department would process them. I also assisted with copy machines as a page, and assisting with the scanners and computers is part of my job as a clerk now.
Interestingly nobody on staff is allowed to help with resumes or job applications except for our on-staff college and career counselors.
Now as part of my job I work shifts on the adult reference, youth services, YA and welcome desks, assist librarians with programs, type up our quarterly program catalog, and other things. I’m not supposed to do any reader advisory, but sometimes when I’m on the YA desk I can’t help myself haha. Some librarians like working with me for that reason and others do NOT. But I’m often told I should consider getting my masters in library science, which I think I’m going to do after I finish my current masters program. I’d love to work in teen services.
So true that you never know what you’re going to get when working with the public!
Being a librarian is my dream career too! I wish I could go back to school. I have a degree but I did poorly in school due to mental health issues. I can’t get into any grad schools including library science. I would have to start from undergrad! I feel like my time is gone. Thank you for making these videos so I can live vicariously through you!

I'd love to hear more about any tips you have for interviewing for a librarian position or how to set yourself apart in the application and interview process!

I'm on disability benefits, but honestly if I had to work being a librarian would probably be one of my best bets. I volunteered at a special ed highschool library for a while, that was fun. The workload was very light (if any of the students read for fun they probably got their books somewhere else, because the school library was tiny and the public library here is free for under 18's). The only teacher who regularly sent students in was nice enough to send them out in small groups. Because I was the youngest librarian there and neurodivergent myself I kinda instantly became the cool librarian, which was super fun. Sadly the school closed down, but I would have had to quit at some point anyway.

I'm a part time art student, and I don't have any experience in library science but I would love to do an internship. For a while I was afraid to try out library work because I thought it was a little less active? But I can see now that's not the case, lol. I love the idea of distributing information and taking care of a large store. Im just wondering if this is something I should consider?

This was really interesting. I've always appreciated our local libraries, from when I was a kid and taught my kids the same. (got them library cards when they were reading and writing; so quite young). My biggest frustration with my current library is they hardly ever have the books I want to check out. I usually have to request interlibrary loan for both myself and my son. Over the summer we checked out a lot of books and probably more than half of those were interlibrary loans; one even coming from out of state. How does this save money? (the farthest interlibrary loan however was still instate, but it was about a 9 hour drive distance).
BookZealots I’m going to talk about this in my next video. Getting books on library shelves is a lot more difficult than people realize and a lot of that comes down to funding and the relationships that libraries have with publishers. And with interlibrary loans books can always be mailed if the distance is too far. Depending on the distance some libraries may charge to have the book sent to their system.
@@BookishRealm Oh boy, if my local library told me there was a charge I'd probably just buy the book myself. 🤔 My county is supposedly very poor and the library offers a TON of activities and food for kids up to 18 during the summer. I assume that's where the bulk of the funding goes. ?? How can I find these things out? Looking forward to your next video. 👍
This was one of the most interesting videos I've ever watched as, despite spending a large amount of my free time as a teenager in a number of local libraries, I knew next to nothing about what is involved in working in one, other than what you see when you go in. I am a bit confused about this Dewey system though... why would books be categorised by numbers and not by descriptive (and therefore clear and simple) names? I've just googled it and done a _very_ quick look at the wilki page and am really none the wiser. It notes that the Dewey system is a US invention so maybe that's why I've never heard of it (I'm in the UK)? TFS :)
Vamps Rock lol yea I don’t know if Dewey exists outside of the US and honestly it never made sense to me. I think the categories make more sense and it’s easier for the public.

Evie Redding definitely give it a try! There are a lot of people who are introverted that work in public libraries. I just happen to be an example of an individual that’s an extrovert lol I have a lot of colleagues that are introverts and absolutely love working in libraries.

This was such an interesting video... i remember asking my librarian: "What exactly do you do?" She said the same as you, but that was some years ago. Now, i see that a lot of clerks are doing the front-end and back-end stuff. Henceforth, my curiosity is piqued because there are a lot of librarians, academic and public, that work on the back-end and i am still unclear to what the job description is...also, why do you need a Master's degree for this type of career.
