A big problem I have is remembering student names when I’m only in a class for a day, especially when desks don’t have name tags and there is no seating plan. Do you have any tips on how to quickly remember student names? “Thank you johnny for having your eyes on me and your voice turned off” is more effective than “this student here….”. Thank you!
I recommend reading all the names on the attendance sheet before students even walk in, and when you do take attendance make eye contact with each student when you call their name. It also helps to repeat names in your head once you put a face to them, especially those students who are more talkative, as they are more likely to be the ones who talk when they're not supposed to.

I just started subbing. I am laughably bad at controlling a classroom. My concern with stars is... I don't know where I buy stars. Amazon, I guess? It seems I'd have to buy a lot. I don't want to spend money on stars. I sure don't make much. Also handing out stars seems a great time for children to start raising their voices. I pick through a box of stars making sure each kid gets seven? I can't hand two pieces of paper to them without an eruption of yelling.
