    I don't think I've ever done this after watching a TH-cam video, but I just wanted to come back here sincerely thank you for the incredibly powerful strategies in this video, in particular the classroom token economy system. After applying this very strategy (and your countdown strategy) into my substitute teaching, I've literally experienced a night-and-day 180 degree difference in terms of my command of the classroom. It honestly feels like magic. Even better, it seems to work across all ages - I've used it with great effect in Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade classrooms. Thanks again for your video!

    Thank you so much for this advice! As a sub for elementary school, I think I'm going to start doing this. I have a feeling the kids will be alot more motivated. My biggest struggle right now is noise in the classroom and getting them to be quiet while we're doing work or I'm explaining directions. Maybe this will be that extra motivation for them.

    I love all of your suggestions about positive reinforcement! A big problem I have is remembering student names when I’m only in a class for a day, especially when desks don’t have name tags and there is no seating plan. Do you have any tips on how to quickly remember student names? “Thank you johnny for having your eyes on me and your voice turned off” is more effective than “this student here….”. Thank you!

    • @migz019
      @migz019 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I recommend reading all the names on the attendance sheet before students even walk in, and when you do take attendance make eye contact with each student when you call their name. It also helps to repeat names in your head once you put a face to them, especially those students who are more talkative, as they are more likely to be the ones who talk when they're not supposed to.

    One time I got called in late. I got there and the next door teacher asked me, "Did she leave a sub plan?" I told her, "I don't know, they just called me in, and I haven't found any". She kept asking me the same thing and I kept responding the same thing. Then she said, "So yes or no?" I said, "no", but like really? You're going to interfere, be completely unhelpful, and get me more stressed?!

    Nothing stresses me out more than when I show up and there's no sub plans. Like, what the heck do you want me to teach them for 6 hours? And these kids have several different books that they work out of, some of them try to lie to you as if you're dumb, everybody has to go to the bathroom, and many of the students are transferring in and out of the classroom and going to various different teachers throughout the day. Seriously stress-inducing! Thankfully, it has only happened about two times so far. I will be avoiding those last minute calls because of this. But if you have a planned absence with no sub plans, you seriously suck! 😅

    I just started subbing. I am laughably bad at controlling a classroom. My concern with stars is... I don't know where I buy stars. Amazon, I guess? It seems I'd have to buy a lot. I don't want to spend money on stars. I sure don't make much. Also handing out stars seems a great time for children to start raising their voices. I pick through a box of stars making sure each kid gets seven? I can't hand two pieces of paper to them without an eruption of yelling.

      Hi Sarah! I think you might be confused on what type of stars I use. They aren't tangibles. You write them on the board. If you watch this video you will know what I mean. Hope this helps! th-cam.com/video/FoQc9uSHnJg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=gjlmcenjm2MvsiMk

    I've found it's not about what you say but how you say it. My mentor has given commands to students and I've seen them give and attitude and not comply, but I've give those same commands to those same students and they listen without complaining. If you come at students with an attitude, they'll just throw it back at you. You do have to be assertive, confident, but also neutral enough in your tone to where you don't trigger them.

      Take a sports team or a club of some kind. Getting to know students in a different setting/building relationships is one of the best ways to improve classroom management. This takes time of course.

    • @tarlkoroban3733

      Humour helps. Cracking a few jokes improves the atmosphere in class. Taking an interest in students. Ask them what they did over the weekend. Be genuinely interested in them. Chat to students at lunch time/ break. A compliment or kind word means more than you will ever know to a lot of students. This pays dividends in class.

    I tend to do the walk and correct the trouble makers with a gentle reminder method. I taught a bit in Korea where they made me yell at them and realized it doesn’t work. A lot of kids have big egos and just don’t know how to stay still. A gentle reminder helped them though

    I'm a new sub who has 0 management skills. I'd love to try this, but if you're giving 5-8 at a time, that would fill the grid very quickly. I can't be giving 30 min of chrombebook time etc. What do you do when the grid is full. And what is in the prize box?

    • @TheMagicSub

    I like steps 1 and 3, the emphasis placed on the personal connectivity, interactive energy and respect, but dont like the game nature of step 2. I see us being there to learn and do a job not being tricked into doing something even if it has a psychological angle. I was taught by nuns in school, and they would never use any angle or ploy to get you to behave and comply- that would be a waste of time to them.
