    I love this rough sound. Edited or not, it sounds awesome and every microphone gives it a unique characteristic.
    I'm trying to imagine how the song 'Man of Iron' by Bathory would sound like when played by you. Please cover it with your own touch someday 😁

    DPA pre-process sounds the best, really a pleasure to hear.
    I would love to buy an album full of Gnaal's song, no lyrics or whatsoever, just this intrument and ambient melody

    Wow, thank you for passing that tip along about marking your strings. I'm definitely going to do that now. It's kinda like how I fret my prototype instruments. I string them up; then use a straight edge to locate where the notes are and cut the frets in. I reference off the string I typically use because otherwise you would end up with frets that are not straight. I'm just a one string wonder anyway.

    I'm in love with the GNAAL sound and it's a beautiful instrument too👏👏 I finished my own tagelharpa a couple of days ago and I also put twisted archery lines for the strings but I can't get it to sound right. I've put a lot of resin on it and on the bow so I don't think it's the problem, it's seems like the bow is not making the enough friction to make vibrate the strings. I'm a complete newbie and I don't really know what the issue could be 😅

    Very useful video. I marked the strings as well when I was using horsehair but since it has to be retuned very often (consequently the string is slowly moving towards the tuning peg) the markings became incorrect after a while. I think that works better with the bowstrings.

      If you use a thread you can move it along the string as it changes tone.

    DPA was absolutely amazing, I heard the first notes and couldn't help myself but shout 'wow!' It sounds so natural and warm, yet clearly it is the unique scratchy sound of a tagelharpa. The AKG was impressive too (more clear, but not as warm), the Sontronics and K&K were boring

    Hello, I am building a taglharpa for my education (furniture making with a specialisation course in instrument making) and I have based my design on yours (with credit given in the documentation, because you did an amazing job on this one), but there's two things I can't quite figure out on my own. I really want to use horsehair strings, but I am having great dificulty finding black horsehair of sufficient length, is there much difference when using white horsehair for the strings? I would stille use the black horse hair on the bow, becuase I hear that improve the action and grip.
    The second question is regarding the fine tuners. I have found a variety of available fine tuners online, some for gut string, some for steel and some saying they can be used for both. What kind would I need for the horse hair strings?
    I would like to end with thanking you before hand for any help you might be able to give me, and for inspiring me to make one of these instruments. I absolutely fell in love with the sound of GNAAL the first time I heard it and have been an absolute blast making my own taglharpa, and learning a whole lot in the process!

    DPA Most clean but you need to put your microphon when you are recording the down side far away and the top of microphone seeing at your instrument then we can have a clear view, microphones are used on different posisions to archive the balance of sound so we have bowed lyra more bass so we need to use the top side of microphone to archive a sound balance called sweet spot on any way you save time.

    I have built a taglharpa and am having some difficulty getting the strings to "sing" or resonate. I have B50 Dacron archery line in the 7-9-11 thread sequence that you use. Did you braid or twist the threads together or keep them separate and straight? I'm using dark resin, but can't seem to get the strings to vibrate correctly. Any advice? Thank you!

    • @ELDRIMmusic
      @ELDRIMmusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, David!
      I twisted the strings. It will take some time to make the strings "sing". I would like to see a photo , or even better, a video of you playing the instrument before I can give a good answer, but from my experience, it takes some time before a new, bowed instrument works properly.

    • @MajorGRecording
      @MajorGRecording 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ELDRIMmusic Espen, thanks for your advice! I twisted the strings, and gave the bow and strings a very liberal amount of resin and it is now singing!!! I will post a little video on the facebook group. Thanks again! I play guitar and bass, and have a home recording studio and am one step closer to getting the taglharpa incorporated into the music making here.

    I have some questions please.
    Question 1: does the bow require Rosin to make the sound?
    Question 2: i tried making my own tagelharpa and nomatter what material i use the moment i put my finger on the string it just immediately muffles and doesnt make any sound. I dont understand how you get the tone change just by touching the string? Ive tried THREE times now with three different strings, horsehair, nylon and a steel turkish lyre string. NONE of them work. Ive literally tried everything and im about to give up. Please help.

      I've been thinking about that and it's actually impossible to say. My loudsepakers are not totally neutral and quite certainly sounds different than all the other loudspeakers various people sit in front. Through my loudspeakers and my Beyerdynamics DT770 PRO I would say a mix between the Sontronics and the DPA.

      Have you ever heard of synthetic bow hairs for cello related instruments? You recently switched over to archery line, which got me thinking that you might be able to use synthetic bow hair for the strings on Gnaal. Apparently the strands are rough and textured like horse hair, so it might give you a more faithful sound.

    Thanks for this video, I appreciate it a lot! I am an amateur luthier from Norway, too, and I was planning on making a talharpa with similar dimensions. I have checked your plans you published on Facebook, and compared it to your video. For me it seems that the scale length (the distance between the nut and the bridge) you mentioned in the video (625 mm) is way too short. I tried to calculate the ratio of the full length of the instrument and the model you published, and it seems more like a scale length of ca. 750 mm with the total length of 1050 mm is more realistic. Are my calculations sort of correct? Setter stor pris på ditt svar. :)

      Hi!
      The drawings in the album is a bit bigger than what I ended up with. Mostly because it was hard to get a hold of long enough horse hair.
      As I mention in the video: the total length is 104cm. and the width is 20cm.

    The sound of this instrument is incredible! I'm curious, when you say you use B50 archery line for the strings, do you purchase a complete bow string and modify it? Or do you buy the polyester string on a spool and wind your own strings? I was looking online and couldn't really find a place to buy bowstrings with set numbers of strands, so I thought I'd ask for advice. I really appreciate how much information you're willing to share on these lovely instruments:)

    Hello, me again haha. I had another quick question. I've recently finished making my own Talharpa thanks to your plans and advice! I've noticed it goes out of tune really easily though. I'm also using strings made of B50 archery line with the same number of strands as yours too. Do you twist your strings to a certain tightness or anything to help them stay more stable, or does Gnaal also go out of tune rather quickly? Looking forward to hearing from you!

    • @ELDRIMmusic
      @ELDRIMmusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Are you sure it's not your tuning pegs that move?

    • @adamhorner3950
      @adamhorner3950 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ELDRIMmusic I'm pretty sure, they're quite tight and creak sharply if they slip. I was trying to tune it E3,B2,E2 and it would quickly drop in tuning while playing. I tried D3,A2,D2 tuning instead and it's been fairly stable, which is weird to me because it's not THAT far from the previous tuning. I'm honestly a bit stumped, haha.

    • @realmagiccreatives
      @realmagiccreatives 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@adamhorner3950 I have recently built my own tagelharpa and noticed the same thing. Strings naturally stretch under tension so any time I put new strings on or adjust the strings there would be a period of a few days where I would play for a few miniutes- retune. Play for a few minutes- retune. Possibly 10 or so times a session and then leave the strings overnight under tension and repeat. The strings will gradually settle in an stay in tune longer and longer. I think by nature of the material we are using (horse hair, fishing line, archery line, etc.) the strings will be more tempermental than the metal strings of a guitar or traditional string instrument. Hope this helps!
