- Matthew turns the camera on Paul as he demonstrates, for the first time, the step-by-step process of illustrating his children’s book. How was he able to do it with almost no vision at all? We include a “Paul Vision” simulation so you can get a sense of the process from a blind guy’s perspective.
Watch the extended video where Matthew performs a READ ALOUD of the book Paul wrote and illustrated when he was 6 years old (“The Sad Turtle”): / 18-how-my-blind-87947391

“Follow Pringle and Finn as they deliver wedding cakes to their animal friends. Every cake tells a story, and every wedding offers a challenge that Pringle and Finn must face as a team. The Pengrooms is an enduring tale about love, friendship, and the importance of teamwork.”

For anyone who doesn't know that this is based in reality: The conservation center on Penguin Island (off the coast of Western Australia) houses a bonded pair of male penguins. I visited a few years ago, and the pair had just successfully hatched and raised their first foster egg/chick. They had nested each season, as penguin pairs do, apparently hoping to have an egg. Finally, they received one (slipped into their nest by the keepers) that had been abandoned by its biological parents. With the dedicated care of its foster dads, the chick was able to be released into the wild population on the island! I predict that Pringle and Finn will be excellent parents, too.
@boulevardiere1623 Awww I didn’t know this! 🥲🥰 Thanks for sharing!
Awwww ❤
This has happened at a number of zoos over the years, actually! It's always a fun story.
I have the book “and tango makes three”! Now I need this to complete my life ❤
@@katekramer7679 Yes! I've seen the story in a few different places but have only seen the happy couple firsthand on Penguin Island. Can confirm, they were adorable.
‘I don’t mind being blind, but not caffeinated?’ I’m with you Paul 😂 Being awake is very important!
😂😂
its so freaking amazing to see him do such detailed art with that kind of vision omg. Especially when you guys showed his pov when colouring that green scarf, PAUL IS AMAZING.
Thank you!!!
he is not blind they are scamming people on line for views... it came out that they are scammers
Nope.@@Berndr
@@Berndr*ahem* uh that is not correct.
Thank you for showing the process!! This was so interesting, as are all of your vids
Paul you are an amazing young man. I am 60 and I am a very negative person. I used to paint and gave it up because I have RA. I am going to try again. You are an inspiration to all.
If Paul can do it, I can do it!!💜
Can I just point out- it is so refreshing to hear Matthew ask “do you want me to help you?”. Obviously there’s couply roasting and teasing involved, but modeling the instinct of not assuming Paul needs your help is HUGE for partnerships! I am going physically disabled and I am so thankful for my partner who never interferes with my independence but also helps when I ask
For some reason the plushy being upside down at 3:25 was far too adorable.
I’m an artist but Paul is on another level. The whimsy and charm and detail of his art is amazing 🤩. I have already saved some of his art in the cart for my apartment😊
❤❤❤
I love that you as a child felt like your book needed a hardcover. Thinking of your readers before you even created the book, so kind haha
I have a headache and when you put on "Paul vision", it made my headache hundred times worse. I admire you Paul for being able to deal with it all the time. You are amazing!
"It took over a year to do," said Paul. "Well, yeah, you're blind," replied Matthew. XD
I like seeing you two sitting down and talking but I like this majorly chaotic energy.
😂
Thank you for sharing Paul’s artwork and highlighting that blind people can be creative.
I have RP as well and have a degree in fine art.
Congratulations Paul on your book, I’m so proud of you.🌈❤️
I’m mind blown at his artistry!!! Paul your skills are incredible and even more impressive with your vision loss! You are such an amazing artist like wow
You two are seriously like Ying & Yang. How you balance each other out and come together to create something like this is amazing!!!
Is he going to be surrounded by Pengrooms as he narrates this story?
I hope so. They're cute.🤭
Paul and maple need their own art show. Like the 2023 version of Bob Ross. Make those happy fluffy clouds Pauly!!!! ⛅️ 🎉
YES!!
I think Paul and Mr Maple can both rock the Bob Ross hair too.
as a fellow artist, seeing paul drawing made me happy im not gonna lie xD keep up the good work paul! i'd love to see more of your works, it's such a nice art style!
Thank you so much 😀
Yay! Can’t wait for the sequel. My kid loves the book and plushie. Can’t read the book without the plushie. Not only is the artistry stunning, but the quality of the book is outstanding. The pages are thick so when my kid turns the page, it doesn’t rip. Well done! You guys made such a great team!
This is awesome!! Thank you for sharing ❤️
I’m SUUUUUPER impressed how you create this kind of artwork with such little vision!!! Thank you so much for sharing this - when you turned on Paul vision when you were showing the artwork it blew my socks off! You must have a very good picture of it all in your head because as you draw there’s so little you can see and still the lines need to be in harmony with the rest of the image. I’m in awe!
Thank you!! Yes I think my ability to “see” it all in my head is what allows me to do it!
Yay!! Will be fascinating getting a glimpse into how Paul creates his amazingly cute artwork! It’s just so brilliant and clever how he has adapted to carry on his artistic passions! Oh! And please tell me Matthew will be doing voices for the characters when he reads The Sad Turtle on the extended ep?!! ❤️ 🐢 🐑 🦒 🐖 ☕️ ❤️
That was fascinating! Paul is such a talented artist and Matthew is obviously a huge support to him. Gonna go listen to The Sad Turtle now!
❤
My heart aches for a cure! Paul's artwork is stunning. It grabs me and I just keep looking at it. The textures and the colors and the pure sweetness of the drawings are amazing to me. Seriously, he is my favorite children's artist as of now! (I just found this channel today and have been binge watching.) I can't imagine all of that ability just... ending.
And now that I've seen the video that shows what he can see... I'm even more amazed by this extremely talented young man! 😊
OMG! The static made my brain hurt. So much sensory input. What a great way to demonstrate just how much or little you see. Everyone should have your positive attitude and positive energy. The world would be a happier place for so many.
This was an excellent video idea showing the real step by step process of the book's creation. Paul you are phenomenal, watching your process & Matthew switching it to "Paul vision" while you were working is truly mind blowing. Matthew don't sell yourself short, you had an integral involvement in the creation of the book, you're like the editor & in a sense a co-creator behind the scenes. You two are such a great pairing!
I absolutely love you both. Your laughs are contagious 🤣. Paul's positive attitude is awesome. I love this story of where this all started!
Thank you so much!!
My heart! I love how supportive you are, Matthew, to Paul, who has worked so hard in creating his book. Paul, the fact you’re still doing what you love with the vision you do have left is really inspiring to me. Proves that we don’t have to give up our dreams entirely. We may only need to adjust how we do things instead.
That is amazing what Paul can do with the little bit of vision he has
I’d love to see an interview with Matt and Paul’s families.
Mr Maples needs to make a dog toy version of your pengroom plushies so he can have his own! I think that might be the next logical step 😊
Paul and Matthew are amazing. Paul is a fantastic artist. Hugs to Matthew, Paul and Mr. Maple❤
I’m glad that he is able to use tools to enable him to draw. Very cool!
I have said before that you are a couple of "angels", with your compassion and upbeat outlook on life - but now it's obvious that you are BRILLIANT, as well. AWESOME!
Absolutely amazing. It is great that Paul can still make art dispite his lack of vision. It is so wonderful.
Thanks for sharing how Matthew and you created "Pengrooms." You are amazingly talented, and I can't wait to see the second book...😀
The two of you are just so adorable and you have something very rare and precious. Thank you very much for sharing that with the world! Also Paul, OMG your art is too darling! You are such a talented artist! Love you guys and wish you both many more years of happiness.
Thank you so much!
Your art is mind-blowing and deserving of admiration 👌 I love watching you guys, you're so pure, it makes me smile 🥰
As an aspiring children's book illustrator, it always inspires me to see Paul's passion for children books. And seeing his process is so fascinating!
Illustration, colouring and the story, all together made a beautiful book. Thank you. ❤️❤️❤️
Have you ever thought to publish "The Sad 🐢"? I would buy it. It's beautiful cover and all!
I think I found you in a short! You are my favorite human story. For so many reasons! OMG thank you for putting yourselves out there, here.
I also am "un" quote disabled, also a writer "on a topic most are ignorant too, homelessness ". I can feel you so much. The laughing is the best for me. I am always saying "you must laugh, if not you might die"! It's where resides!
Sending peace and light
You guys did such an amazing job!! I've been working at a small publishing house for a year now and have dabbled in pretty much every task that comes up in publishing, from text editing over photo editing to layouting (as I said, my company is tiny, there aren't enough employees for specialisation 😅), and from my experience I can say with certainty: your work is really, really good!! You rarely come across self-made books or manuscripts that are anywhere near this professionally created. And let me tell you, learning to work with InDesign is not an easy task... So congratulations, you guys!! 🎉 I'll see to it that I order your book and look forward to the sequel ❤
Your art work on your book is amazing. I am glad that you support each other. I told my eye doctor about Paul and he knew right away your diagnosis. I recently found that I have glaucoma in my right eye and that's my good eye. Nothing to compare with Paul , but daily eye drops for me twice a day. I love you guys and your videos!
You two have such a beautiful relationship ❤.
Waoww...it's like soo wonderful to see and hear such a talented soul and soo proud of him
This was fascinating to watch! I especially loved the origin story of the Pengrooms! (The Matthew penguin with abs is adorable.) Going to order a copy for my niece and nephew! ❤️ 🌈
I love this, I'm so impressed with how you illustrated everything with such little vision. I think it would be cool for the next version to include braille so blind kids can read your book too!
Watching you two always makes me smile.
It’s really reassuring that Paul has the tools to pursue his dream.
Omg,Can't wait!!!!! Love yu guys ......Watchin/Writin from canada 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Fascinating! Thanks for the inside story. 😊
This is so exciting 💜 love your content and thank you for raising awareness for those with disabilities
Thank you so much!!
I am super impressed. I do some digital art for fun and I know how long it can take just to do the most basic of drawing and coloring let alone all the details and layer work.
What program do you use? I’m assuming Photoshop since InDesign was mentioned.
Paul should do a Mr. Maple & friends series… A Guide Dog’s Guide to Guiding People! It would be a fun way to show the difference of their working time and off duty time and bring awareness to kids & parents about guide dogs and the different conditions they help people with.
This is a fantastic idea!! And very similar to the book name I’ve been thinking about doing “A Guide Dog’s Guide to Guide Dogging” 😂😂
Hi, guys! I'm a fan from Brazil.
Paul, I have RP too and I'm legally blind. I'd like to share this tip with you (in case you haven't tried it yet). To help you see (slightly) better for your paintings and drawings and stuff like that, you could use glasses with therapeutic filter. They don't magnify, but they are great at filtering the light and increasing contrast and adding a bit of more definition. You might benefit from wearing them, especially that you can get more comfort and relief in your eyes as well (at the end of the day, we sort of strain our eyes even though we use different reading/magnfication resources).
I appreciate this not only as someone who has been interested in digital illustration, but also to learn how others do it with their unique circumstances
Absolutely in awe of Paul and his artistry! You're both amazing!
The kind of whimsical imagination/style of drawing is bringing me back to childhood. I’m so grateful Paul is sharing his art with us, what an incredible book ❤
Bloody awesome work...along with admiration for you both . Love conquers all...what you have between you shows anything is possible !
Paul, you are a very fine artist! And then be able to find ways to work around the "obstacle" of your level of blindness... just wow!
Hi Paul! I illustrated children's books too and I ADORE your art style! I love the colors and textures that you add! You are super talented! Congratulations on your book!
That is truly amazing how he can do that. You are a real inspiration Paul
Wow! Ridiculously talented both of you. The way you move and help each other is so lovely.
Love Love Love!!!! Thank you soooo much for sharing the process, the back story, and for just being YOU!
Wow! You two are so creative and compliment each other so well. Paul's art work is really beautiful.
Thank you so much!
Oh my gosh, this is fantastic. This will sound extremely silly by comparison, but I was an artist when I was younger and a very good one. However, life took me in a different direction and now I haven't really made art in a decade. I used to have perfect vision, but now I have astigmatism, and even wearing my glasses (with a very recent prescription) my vision is blurry because of the astigmatism. I have been telling myself that I won't be able to make good art anymore because I can't see the finest details, and it won't live up to my previous work. Needless to say, your extremely impressive and truly beautiful illustrations FULL of fine details, as well as the generous walkthrough of your process, has shown me that I have nothing to worry about. If you, with all your challenges so much more limiting than mine, can make illustrations this beautiful, then there is nothing stopping me from making art again. Maybe it won't be photorealistic, but the lovely charm of so-called imperfections makes art even better, in my opinion. Thank you for inspiring me. I will definitely be buying the Pengrooms. It looks adorable and sweet, just like you both.
I am in AWE of your skill for artistry and blown away after having seen your field of vision, you should be SO chuffed with yourself.
You're so talented Paul ! I love your colors !
Thank you for explaining colour-blindness!! I'm colour-blind with red-green, i believe those are the colours, and it makes it very hard with those two colours but so many people think its just grey that colour-blind people see.
Wow Paul! I am just so impressed that you are able to do this level of illustration with your vision impairment. It probably takes you 10x longer (or more) than a fully sighted person to do each page, yet you stuck with it to get your book published. What an accomplishment!!
Perhaps sometime you can do a video on how easy or hard it was to get your first book published. I hear that it is so hard to break in to that business, so I was wondering how you did it. Was being legally blind a hinderance or a help with publishers?
Thanks for sharing this step by step. It allows your viewers to better understand how difficult these drawings actually were for you. But they came out amazing!!
Absolutely love you 3!!! You bring so much love, joy, and laughter to my heart. Much love and many blessings! 💖🙏🧚🏻🌈
Paul this is so amazing you're super talented! maybe you should see if they could become a cartoon show and do something to make people more aware of your diagnosis. It looks like it could make a nice kids cartoon.
the amount of detail of the drawings is amazing!!! and I love that is fruit of team work as well, you are great, guys!!!
I could say this about all your videos and shorts I watch, but you two are simply adorable together! Thanks for sharing this.
I’ve just found you in the reels and I really enjoyed yours sense of humor. You’re sweet and inspirational 💞 I’m sending my appreciation from Poland 🇵🇱✌🏻
This was fascinating. Thank you Paul
wow Paul you are very talented! its so good that you can still do things you enjoy! Both of you guys are so sweet and always smile when i see your videos!
this is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen I cant even fathom it
May I just say, as someone who isn’t blind, PAUL HOW ARE YOU GIVING THE BEST ART ADVICE-
I draw and I’m not kidding you-you have better drawing than me- now I’m not saying I’m jealous, but nonetheless, you’re amazing at art. When you do lose all your vision, I hope you somehow continue drawing. Don’t stop with the talent you have. :]
Congratulations for your new book! The front page is so cutie patootie ❤️ And I love the penguins, they’re so adorable!
Thank you so much!
Paul, you are a fantastic artist!
Thanks for a fascinating video and for showing what it is that Paul sees when he's making his illustrations. And Matthew, you are a great assistant. You guys make a great team.
Glad you enjoyed it
I feel like $25 is a lot for a children’s book, until you think about how much incredibly hard work went into making it. So amazing to see.
Matthew sounds like a great editor helping with Paul's errors!!! You two make a perfect team!!
It was amazing hearing how the Pengrooms came to life!! Paul has done an amazing job!!! I actually learned a few things to make my own art better too ❤❤
The one guy with vision knocks over the lamp 😂😂 can relate
Did we just had a litle "Paul of the jungle" moment?
Paul you are amasing, what dedication X
This was so interesting ! Thanks so much for making it ! I can’t wait to buy your book!
Y’all make me smile so much❣️
That was so breathtaking I could watch it over and over again good job
Amazing art work! Love the penguins. And got to say Maple is absolutely adorable!!! 🐾🐾💛
Thank you so much 😀
You are the sweetest couple. ❤
Great video showing process of how you illustrate and touch up your work! ❤
Paul your artistry is beautiful. You should add your turtle from your first book into the storyline. Then some of your pengrooms can have some friends.😀
I can't get enough of you guys!
I stumbled upon Paul one night out of pure boredom and it happened to be one of the prank shorts. I immediately thought OMG Matthew why! Then as I watched, Paul was having as much fun as Matthew was, then I had to go to the channel and start watching. I absolutely love you guys! Paul has such an amazing talent and Matthew is so supportive.
I love the the little Pengrooms....they are so adorable❤
This is nothing short of genius !!! Amazing talent, truly !!! I thoroughly enjoy all of your videos but this one is truly amazing and I really appreciate that you showed what Paul vision looks like. You are both such amazing men.
What you both do is so amazing, I’m so happy you’re able to continue art and knowing the origin of the pengrooms just makes me love them more❤
Thank you so much!
I love your kitchen It matches so well with the rest of the room.
They are both so amazing ❤
Thanks for another tip. I went into my settings and fixed my ipad so I can read and see stuff better. I wish I could thank you both in person. You have eased some of my sadness at losing my sight and give me some comfort.
His art style is so cute. that much skill and adaptation for the passion in the arts. As an artist i have alot of respect for the dedication.
From one colourblind person to another; I have deuteranopia. My rainbow has three colours; blue, green and yellow. On top of that, I have been losing my sight due to diabetes. On saying that, I am hoping to get copies of all three of your books to read to my grandson. I think you should also publish The sad Turtle. I think it would inspire children everywhere to never give up and follow their dreams, no matter what hurdles life throws at them.
His art is so so beautiful omg
