Monuments to the Dead with Phil Harding - Lockdown Lectures

  • In a special lecture for the Council for British Archaeology's Festival of Archaeology, Phil Harding reflects on the excavation of the site of Bulford Camp in Wiltshire. From the earliest times, mankind has felt the need to mark and memorialise significant places, and Bulford is no exception. In this lecture, Phil recounts the different eras uncovered during excavation of the site, from early burials, to ring ditches, to pits with sophisticated grave goods. From there, he traces a connection from the Neolithic to the Napoleonic through his work on the battlefield of Waterloo.

    I was researching Phil on the internet, and stumbled upon these video's ! So happy to see him again. We watched Time Team in the Netherlands, and because of Phil and the rest of the team, I know more about the history of the UK than I do of my own country. Now we are living in Brittany France, and being surrounded by Neolithical monuments, I often think back to Time Team. We decided to watch them again on You Tube, and it is still so interesting and fun ! We need much more programs like that on the TV ! Time team, House detectives etc. Now I have some new interesting stuff to see on You Tube. Thank you Phil Harding !!!!!

      Neither will this Canadian ever get to dig ancient remains or find on the ground, but often the "lumps and bumps" and mountains all around BC Canada make me smile to reflect on what Brit's consider hills & mountains! archeology here would be First Nations ancient villages pre-Colonial remains, and currently exposed Church hidden & unmarked graves of Indigenous children without parents oversight, awareness or legal rights to stop;!
      Hundreds, thousands of Hidden graveyards where it begs White peoples to support the digging up of babies, children violently stolen by Britian's genocide driven Colonialism

    I went to Stonehenge in the late 60's and was struck by the feeling of permanence, and a feeling of the antiquity that was all around me, its a magical place that I have never forgotten. I have never been to Waterloo but have a medal that was made honouring the 200 year anniversary, I treasure it. Phil Harding is a wonderful speaker, he speaks with such passionate enthusiasm about archeology that makes me feel excited too, though I have loved archeology and history since I was in primary school in the late 50's. Sadly I was not able to see my dream of being an archaeologist as I was needed at home but I still love it and Phil brings it alive to me, bless him.

      Me too. Though it went seriously downhill at the end with the new producers that wanted to make it more 'accessible" by replacing Mick Aston with some bimbo photomodel and the digging became some side activity for a 'how did they do this?' type of show.
      Time Team died with Mick. One of the most inspiring archaeologists ever... He did so much for the field. Miss him every day.

    I once met a rather scary man with a full back tattoo, standing bare chested outside an ink parlour, on a summers day. The freshly pricked drawing crudely illustrated another “the shutting of the gate” historic moment in English history.
    However, I don’t believe the man had clearly seen the new tattoo or banked on the Polish inker having no cultural reference to said described historic act, or a clear understanding of the man’s local dialect (which was punch drunk anyway). Therefore, I concluded he must’ve interpreted the recounted narrative to the best of his abilities.
    So I asked the bloke in question “what’s the dancing stick figure dwarves underneath the city gate all about?” And he said “dancing?”, and I replied “yeah, with handguns” and he glared back with those scary eyes. So I looked again, searching for the answer, and there it was, in type script scrollwork at the base of his spine....
    “The Shooting Of The Gates by the Apprentice Boys”.

    • @philroberts7238
      @philroberts7238 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Are you sure he wasn't referring to an historic moment in Irish history? I may well be wrong, but it sounds like Derry (or Londonderry, if you prefer) to me. It might explain the tatooist's difficulty with his accent! ;)

    • @DaraM73

      Phil Roberts it was for the English crown, English history

    • @philroberts7238
      @philroberts7238 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DaraM73 If your man with the inky back identified himself as English first and foremost then, like King Billy himself, I'm a Dutchman. Everybody's history interconnects to a greater or lesser extent, but it would be more accurate to say that the particular event in question, so curiously commemorated, was a moment in British rather than specifically English history. Anglo-Irish-Scots history might be more accurate still, I suppose. (And I'd be willing to bet that in any case it was designed to be more a statement on the current state of politics in Northern Ireland than anything else. People can use, and abuse, history to make it fit whatever belief system they want it to.)
      Sorry for the rant, but I am always uneasy when I see history pressed into service in the name of religion (any religion), or sect (any sect), or nation (any nation, including my own - which I suspect is the same as your own).
