A very rare find; a real hands on working archeologist with a wonderful sense of humor who does not take himself serious, yet proper and professional when addressing his passion for his occupation.
I met this legend today at Stonehenge, he was demonstrating flint knapping. I could have stayed talking to him for hours. Growing up watching Time Team he was always my favourite team member.
Congratulations, you are indeed lucky to have spent time with this unique and very special man. He is a born teacher and so willing to share his knowledge.
I would love to have Phil as a teacher or just a friend to curl up and listen to with some pictures. His videos on Waterloo are fascinating even though they aren’t my time of interest.
To be fair I'd watch Phil sitting reading the phone book. Absolutely favourite member of the team. I also used to love the historian Robin who I don't think got as much recognition as he deserved. But let's be honest the full team were all highly watchable individuals who bounced off each other and worked so well together
Ohhhh, This is my shovel, precious ... I do so hope he comes on by for a visit on the NEW TIME TEAM, he is truly missed, worldside. I am sure the Patreon fams could find a dig for him to come and participate in as a guest "Expert" as his digging days are behind him it seems.
I remember in one show, the whole crew lost their kits because some thief nicked Time Team van, except Phil, because he slept with his shovel and toolbox under the hotel bed. lol
In about 2009/10, I considered contacting CH4 to request I be allowed to attend a Time Team dig purely for the helluva it; it'd have been an amazing experience. However, I knew nothing about archaeology, so looking back, I'm pretty sure I'd have turned up without any tools on the first day, looking like a right tool in the process, lol. 😂
For Phil's box it'd have to be a brass or copper reinforcement that fully covers the bottom & corners, plus the edges of the hinged lid (preferably cut, naturally, in a visual style like Hiberno-Scottish.) 🙂
New Time Team would quadruple patroons if Phil and Raksha were brought on! Not the same without them. Miss Sir Tony, however he wasn’t a proper digger!
Muppet, everyone of those trowels had dried mortar on them, so Phil either nicked some pointing trowels from some bricklayers, or is a bricklayer during the week, or robs skips on building sites. The way he bangs on you would think they were forged in fucking Mordor.

I *SOOOOO* miss Phil!
Perfect! Phil is an example of an enthusiastic professional. And the journalist has the charm to make him talk
At 70 year myself I can say with utmost surety Phil is the man! God bless you for sure and for certain!
I love Mr. Harding's laugh!!

Phil himself is a treasure!
Love Phil. Informative and enthusiastic. !!
Thank you Mr. Harding ,you just made my day thank you
As ex-foundry moulder, I wholeheartedly agree for Phil's love for a particular shovel. You get attached to one shovel. Love Phil's passion.

Can you remember which episode ?
LOL I remember that. They were digging on the railroad looking for Roman tiles... "Stone the crows"
IIRC, they later found the tools discarded in the bushes.
He's brilliant
To the with the lot of you!
I thought he would surely include the hat as a priceless piece of kit.
The Great British Master of Archaeological Digging!
This is my shovel. There are many like it but this one is mine.
Learning a lot from the master.
I've never been so interested in a trowel before!
" Its a rubber....why do I never use it?? Because I never make a mistake! " 😄👏 Bravo Phil. You really are a true inspiration mate.
Cheers!
🍻🍻
Ohhhh second best of his phrases after stone the crows.
I hope someone puts Phil's box and shovel in a museum.
Phil Harding for PM!!!!! Love that guy
That hat lol epic....
I wonder if Phil keeps flints in the box?☺️
Phil Harding!
Phil could auction his kit off to a fan!
NEVER.
Superb advice..

I always thought that looked to be a longer than usual shovel.
It is. Phil modified the handle to make it easier for him to use after he hurt his back.
3:59 is so funny
"So that's pretty much, oooh........... SPOONS!!!!"
So funny.
Ha! I had a Marshalltown trowel brake on me while my cheap riveted trowel soldiered on.
A good welder could put some tin on the bottom for you Phil.
😊😉
Someone on youtube should do a project to restore is box before is to late.

The Repair Shop... Dom would be able to sort that for Phil.
Reminds me of Triggers broom.

What a beautiful man. Remember ladies its the soul, not the looks that makes a man sexy and wonderful
How many pints is he on by this point?
I wanna know what's in his leather hip case
drugs
Probably the stuff you would carry in a wallet. You never see one stuffed in his back pocket.
I have always wondered that! I thought maybe he was a pipe smoker and had all his tobacco etc in there?
Not sure the young girl realizes just who she’s interviewing. Goodness what an honour
Why would you assume that she wouldn’t?
SHPOONS
Phil, "I didn't say to steal them from your mother's kitchen".
That would be phils box 😂
Is she Australian? Go you bloody ripper! Good job mate

Compass …. Where is the compass?
Phil never uses a rubber
I've wondered how many trowels Phil has worn out through his long career.
Phil, Americans use rubbers to PREVENT mistakes! Lol
a hat
