    P99 was my first pistol. I think it will always be my main sidearm. They got it just right with the P99. Perhaps some more aggressive grip texture would be welcomed, but even without that it fits me perfectly. It always seemed rather elusive to me until I actually got one. I rarely meet others who own P99s.
    I love the trigger. I love the mag release. I love everything about this gun. Mine has been by my side since I could buy a pistol. I will probably replace it one day, but only to preserve my favorite pistol. I think it has earned that title.

      A .22 LR revolver was the first pistol I ever fired as a teen, I've always liked firearms, but it wasn't until the riots of 2020 that my wife agreed to let me purchase any. I ended up buying a Stoeger autoloader 12 gauge shotgun, due to availability, etc. I didn't even know there was such a thing as autoloading shotguns at the time. I've watched a lot of Colion's videos, and this one probably hit my suggestions because I've been looking at the Walther .22 Magnum pistol.
      Now I kinda want this one, before it is gone, and not available anymore. I've been very hesitant about buying any pistols, 1) because I have kids, and my wife has a lot of gun fear (despite being in the Army, go figure) and 2) because I live in Maryland, and Maryland is a quagmire of BS when it comes to gun laws, you have to take a safety course in order to buy a pistol, they maybe/probably keep track of that shit, you can't buy mags over 10 rds unless you go to PA, VA, or WVA, but you're allowed to own them.
      Which is just dumb, all they are doing is encouraging people to travel to other states to buy mags, they ae losing tax revenue on this BS. Why, I don't know.

    It's kinda amazing how ahead of it's time this was when it came out. It's the first gun I can remember with interchangeable backstraps, it has a unique mag release that I actually thought would become the norm, the decocker was handy and clever, and it was way cooler looking than the other guns that were out at the time. Even S&W made and sold a version for a while, until they could engineer their M&P line. And it seems it had an influence on some of the Turkish makers.

    • @RedEyePergo
      @RedEyePergo ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Smith also had the sigma line before the SW99 that was a Glock clone they actually were sued by glock and lost and had to pay them like $30 for every sigma sold . So Smith was on a copycat streak in the 90s

    • @sjhoff
      @sjhoff ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@RedEyePergo $30 for every one sold couldn't have been to much in the end. They didn't just copycat the SW99, they had an agreement with Walther. They worked out some deals, Walther making frames, S&W making slides. Different contours on the Smith version, same gun mechanically. S&W was also making the ppk/s.380 for Walther at the time, and doing some work distributing Walther.

    I bought a P99 AS several years ago to use in my duties as an armed Security Officer, and then an Armored Car Service operator. I didn't (and still don't) like Glock, but once I got my hands on a P99 I KNEW it was the pistol I was going to love to carry. I wasn't wrong! This gun is amazing!! The trigger did take a little getting used to, but that curve flattened out quickly. The paddle style mag release is (to me) more intuitive than the button style on my 1911's. Though I am sad to see it being replaced by the PDP line, I know my P99 is going to be like the the Force, and will always be with me

    The P99 was the third handgun I ever bought after a Springfield 1911 and a S&W 686. I got it in 40 S&W and my main reasoning was because it was James Bond's gun starting with Tomorrow Never Dies. I still have it to this day, it is one of the most comfortable guns to hold that I own and it is my bedside gun specifically because of the double action feature, not taking any chances if I wake up suddenly in the middle of the night.

      I'm pretty sure Canik flat out not only admits it's P99 inspired but is proud of it. We all sit on the edge of our seats waiting for a revolver to 1911 or all steal to polymer type quantum leap in the industry but I think what's going on in the market is even cooler. Companies like Canik, Taurus, RIA, Walther, S&W with the M&P line, etc. to me are executing an even harder innovation strategy. They're trying to squeeze as many premium features as possible into the $300-$700 price point as they possibly can. What's come out especially in past 3 or 4 years was only available at much higher prices before. I admire the super high end pistols like CZ, Stacatto, etc. but very few people are going to spend that kind of money. Now the market is wide open to new firearm owners that won't have to settle for a bad experience, in fact they'll get an awesome gun for the money with optics ready, great triggers, quality sights, custom feeling grips, good accuracy, high capacity, as concealable as they want, the list goes on for just under or even way under $700.

    So, I just picked one of these up and am so pleasantly surprised by just how great it shoots in both double and single action. The DA trigger is wonderful with no stacking and a clean rolling break and a pull weight of somewhere around 6.5lbs and a SA pull weight of sub 5lbs and the reset is quick, and tactile. The action is smooth and the reciprocation is tame making it a very shootable gun. Best of all it is light and the ergonomics are wonderful. All in all this is a gun that warrants shooting not saving in a safe!

    As a P99 owner, to me, there is no other handgun like it. The way it fits so perfectly in the hand. The smooth edges and tapered cut of the slide make it very pocketable and comfortable to carry inside the waist. (why do so many handguns have large, chunky slides with sharp, deep serrations?). Slide only needs to be moved very slightly to cock the firing pin. Mag release is, imo, the best out there. Overall it's a lot of gun in a small, ergonomic package. I'm very fond of the DA trigger as I'm paranoid about accidental discharges and I feel like the little extra time/force to fire a DA would be good to have in a stressful situation. Remarkably easy to take apart and clean and surprisingly simple components given the DA/SA with firing pin drop in the slide.
    I will say the the trigger is not comfortable for long shooting sessions.

Can't we just make it that all politicians are gun free zones. Then we can do away with taxpayer funded capital police, taxpayer funded private security. If gun free zones are the answer. My first gun was a Gen 1 P99. I still love that gun. My primary everyday carry is a P99AS compact. Some people complain about the unusual “staged” trigger, but it’s what I’m used to. If it’s going away, I might have to pick up a couple.

    • @erics2091
      @erics2091 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For others who haven’t held one: The “unusual staged trigger”, is because it has an internal hammer, not a striker. Think of a single action revolver or any hammer fired gun when you can pull the hammer back and the trigger is staged in place. Without a decocker, these guns can only fire. Which is why you may see people placing their thumb on the hammer and pulling the trigger to not fire a round. It’s very unusual if you’ve only shot striker fired guns and it’s worth trying. Lots of fun guns out there!

    CN: When the pistol is loaded, and the Decocker is depressed you CAN holster it in DA mode, however the Anti-Stress lets you have the long pull AND light weight if you retract the slide 10mm after Decocking, then holster. This cocks the Striker, but keeps the trigger in it's long, yet light SA mode. You don't need to have that "long, heavy pull first shot", in DA. It can be light SA, with a long pull (for safety) in case "under stress", similar to HK LEM/CDA trigger mechanism.

Wound up with the Taurus PT111 G2 for about half the price at the time. Still want to upgrade one of these days... 😁
    I don't have any opinion on that mag release other than it looks like you could drop the mag accidentally. Good that it's ambidextrous. I could swap the release on my Taurus if I was a "Southpaw".

    Been shooting the P99AS since 1999... superb firearm.
    Operate the paddle release with the middle finger.
    DA/SA - so easy. Lovely release. Easy to switch to SA if decocked - just move the slide back a wee bit.
    Spend some time learning it - it's not the same as most other plastic fantastics, it's really good! But you got to learn it a bit. All the best bits of a revolver and semi-auto in one 20 round magazine... what's not to like?

    With my Walther P99AS, I measured the reset at 0.08". For comparison, Glocks normally reset at 0.22". To properly feel the reset, you don't move your finger forward, you just relax your finger for just a micro moment and it resets. And yes, it's slightly shorter than the Canik TP9 reset (which I measured at 0.11, which is STILL half of a Glock reset).

    The P99 and I the variants (SW99 and MR9/40) is so underrated. It was designed by a group of guys that designed GLOCK as an improvement. The mag release is more tactical than you realize. You can drop a mag and get back into the fight and on target. The decocker is VERY useful. Super safe and RELIABLE. No drawbacks. This is for a professional or one of those guys you here about, “beware of the guy with one gun”. I know CANIK makes versions of it, but it would be cool if someone made a version based more on the original, even in low numbers. Oh and in .40.

    Like many mentioned in the comments, S&W had a licensed copy called the SW99. What people haven't mentioned is that the SW was the only one offered in 45. Magnum Research ALSO licensed it from Walther as the MR9. Canik's are also all based off the P99, the original TP9 was mechanically identical to the P99 to the point of also having the weird trigger and decocker. I love my P99, wildly accurate pistol.

    My very first handgun was a Walther P99 QA in .40 cal. I wanna say 2004 is when I purchased it. Loved shooting it. But when they discontinued the QA I stopped shooting. Even though you were loosing the 3 rounds, but to me, it always had a slimmer grip than the Glock 23. Which was I think a good tread off.

    When I first went for my CCW, I knew I was only going to be able to afford to buy one gun, and it needed to be able to go everywhere, and do it all. If I was going to trust my life to it, i needed 100% confidence, and no compromises. I did lots of research and settled on a P99C AS (the compact version of the P99) with shorter barrel and 10 rd flush and pinky-rest mags. NO one had one, I had to take a leap of faith and special order it from a warehouse. I also special ordered the extra 'mag sleeve' that let me use full size 15 rd P99 mags in it. Nothing about it was, or is, disappointing. It has been with me everywhere I go ever since. I love the ergonomics, I love the DA/SA trigger, I love the reliability of a striker, I love the paddle mag release, I love the unstoppable reliability, and I love that Walther stands behind their product with a LIFETIME no-questions-asked warranty. Anything breaks, for any reason, they fix it... if it ever needs it, which it sure seems like it never will.

    My all time favorite gun. I carry it decocked and feel extra safe with it that way. Love the paddle release. Highly recommend this gun especially with this trigger

    Canik TP series internals are based off this gun. Triggers are similar on the DA models and reset on other models. (Walther is more refined). The Walther P99 was the bond gun for me (Peirce Brosnan era) This is a great video with the minigun in the background. Enjoyed this one a lot.

    I had a magazine back in 2002-04 I think that had the P99 and the .22 they released at the time as well on the front cover. It mesmerized me with the sexy styling and "high tech" vibe (at the time), then a couple of decades later, I work at a gun shop and there she was. Titanium slide, black frame, used, but in great condition (minus some tiny pock marking along the slide). Also if you're familiar with "Cowboy Bebop" it's Jet's sidearm which I actually think is way cooler than it having been a Bond gun.
