Spailpín a Ruín, played by Tommy (Tommie) Potts, a firefighter and an amateur musician, does not impress by formal (or even less formal) musical standards; the beat is faltering, and his sometimes haphazard tonality, and the ditto sound quality from his fiddle, bow and fingers, are debatable, at best.
Yet, for some strange reason, I find this piece of music quite charming. Very charming, in fact.
    :-)
I could not have played it half as good myself.
    ;-)
It's far from perfect; but, still, very charming! I don't know how he does it.
    Good man!
So, thank you God, for love, life and music!
It may save the world. I think it will.
    Eventually.

Thankfully I picked up this album some years ago at the suggestion of a co-worker, who also recommended a band who was coming to my town back in the early 80s. That band was Silly Wizard. I've never received better music suggestions since.

The slow air from Matt Molloy at 4.28 is called "Dark is the colour of my true love's hair" if anyone's interested. Hard to find info online, as the well known "Black is the Colour" will dominate search results :/

Andy Irvine contributed two songs to the album, and also accompanied Brady on a third track:
"There's Sure To Be A Row" is a song Irvine learnt from "an old tape of the inimitable, much loved, late Willie Clancy." It is "obviously of Music Hall origin and sung to the ubiquitous tune [of] "Star of the County Down"."[70]:100-102 Irvine sings the song, accompanied by Brady (tin whistle) and Lunny (bouzouki and guitar).
"The Mall of Lismore" is a song written in the first person-and as a warning to "other fair maids"-by a girl who was disowned by her father for falling in love with a "dashing young soldier" who, in turn, leaves her "all alone on the Mall of Lismore, when to Dublin his regiment was ordered". Irvine sings and plays harmonica & mandolin, accompanied on harpsichord by Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill.
He also plays mandolin and harmonica on Paul Brady's cover of "Heather on the Moor".

There's a slight problem there with the chronology. "Star of the county Down" is too young a song to have given its tune to any Musical Hall song (late 1920s). The tune is originally that of an English folk song (Dives and Lazerus), which Ralph Vaughan Williams named "Kingsfold" after one of the villages in which the song was collected, and he included it in a hymnal (all this was just around the turn of the 20th century).
Kingsfold went on to be used in many hymns in a number of Christian denominations, which I think is the most likely way it found its way into Ireland and the song "Star of the county Down" ... the name of the writer escapes me right now. Unless of course the writer had access to the published folk song (Dives and Lazerus), which was printed a few years before the hymnal.
This all leads to the conclusion that "There's sure to be a row" is either a much younger song (and therefore not music hall), or that the tune was put to the words at a later date. The "obviously music hall" part isn't really obvious to me from the form of the song either.
      It's all quite curious :-)

Great performances from everybody. A shame that we don't hear more of Dónal Lunny playing solo. I always thought he should make a solo bouzouki album of jigs and reels, with just one or two other instruments.

I just discovered this album existed while digging around EBay. As it doesn't seem to have been reissued, and I don't have a turntable, thanks for putting it up here.
