Wereth Eleven - Heroes. The Belgians who took it upon themselves to not only remember but erect a memorial for these 11 African American soldiers is most commendable. There is good and bad in the human race. Wonderful documentary!!!!
My dad served in the 333rd FA unit and fought in every major engagement including the Battle of the Bulge. By wars end he was became one of the first Black Military Policeman and went on to fight in Korea and Vietnam. He also became one of the first Black CID agents. I too served in the Army beginning my career as a draftee and later earned a commission as an officer in the Infantry.
“The army was an experience unlike anything I've had in my life. I think of two armies, one black, one white. I saw German prisoners free to move around the camp, unlike black soldiers, who were restricted. The Germans walked right into the doggone places like any white American. We were wearin' the same uniform, but we were excluded." - Dempsey Jerome Travis, African-American war veteran, civil rights activist, and writer. His book “Views from the Back of the Bus During WWII and Beyond” features a collection of stories from soldiers like him, brave men who fought for a country that still considered them second class citizens. Thank you for sharing this story of these 11 brave young men. May they never be forgotten.
I'm in tears, my heart is broken. How can any human being be so cruel, colder than that winter in Belgium. I'm so grateful to you Mr. Small, your associates, and all the Belgium people involved, especially Mr. Herman Langer and his wonderful family. God bless you all. Your reward is in Heaven.
No words... fantastic video, grim history and long overdue recognition... Appaling treatment of the African American soldiers by both the Germans and Americans... The Wereth Elevens story is one of many and very glad its been told... RIP
RIP all the men in this group of 11 from the 333rd FAB. You will never be forgotten. As well as, the selfless acts of kindness, from the Belgian people that helped them, as well as memorialized their bravery. God bless
This story touches my heart every time I see it. My father faught in Korea and Vietnam and I appreciate his service. He was treated awful in his time from 1953 to 1974!! Yet he gave his all as every man/women did. So to those that say "black" people don't belong in this country you should watch your mouth. This sacrifice has been given since 1770's at least and more would have served if allowed. So to all that have given time and effort and still give today. Thank you for your service it is greatly appreciated!! 🛐
Why ... isn't this taught in our schools? As an Australian Vietnam vet I am increasingly amazed at the lack of history taught to our young. How on earth do we expect the young of today, to at the very least "be aware" of the sacrifices our forefathers/foremothers have sacrificed for them to be free? Many Thanks for posting.
My grandfather was an Army POW guard during WWII, he did not go overseas. He was detailed to transport German prisoners to POW camps in the South via trains. At mealtimes, they escorted the POWs to the dining cars, where they would be seated and fed...but my grandfather, and his fellow guards, couldn't even get a glass of water out of there, let alone sit down and eat. The Germans noticed this and often asked them, "Why are you here? Why would you serve in the army of a country who treats you so badly?" Sometimes, these Germans were captured SS men. It was one of the few things that would absolutely piss him off... Respect to the memory of the Wereth 11...and the Belgians who did not allow them to be forgotten.
Of the 19,000 dead, one was my wife's uncle, who was about 22 at the time, and she was a toddler. At the train station she hugged him with her little hands and didn't want to let go. He embraced her, kissed her little cheek and off he went in the train. He said to her he would be back soon. He came back in a train that slowly, deliberately, with the paced sounding off of its bell, proceeded through town to the very station where my wife was now standing hand holding her mom, mourning his return home, coffin draped in our flag. He was a tank man killed in the Bulge. Thank you for your service from a deeply, deeply grateful nation.
I Research WW11 battles all the time just seeing if I could actually find out how, what battle on March 4th 1945 my grandfather was KIA. I come across this. Makes me sick to my stomach that this is the first time I'm learning about this horrible massacre. May these brave men rest in peace.
I am a public high school teacher and I am definitely going to be showing this movie. I knew of this event prior to watching this, this is one of the untold stories that needs to be told. It was not mentioned in the movie but the Germans knew of the 333rd and had a genuine dislike for them because of their skill as well as their color.
This is one of the best WW2 documentary’s I’ve seen, it’s good to see that African American soldiers are getting the recognition they deserve and their stories are being told, I only hope the younger generations of today can be inspired by the courage and stoicism of the men of the 333rd.
Racists (us, uk, fr, etc.) fighting anti-semite racists! And blacks who are hated by the whites at home in the USA and racially segregated from whites fight for their racist overloards against NAZIs. This is crazy stuff.
This is by far one of the best WW2 video/doc I’ve ever watched, brave men who continued to fight for freedom even after being subject to racial abuse to the point of being left behind.
After all the ignorance , stupidity and hate these soldiers had to endure , they still did their Duty beyond their call considering the stupidity they were confronted with! At the end of the day , these Soldiers proved just how courageous , brave , determined to fight for their country then any other man during this time and what hell of a soldiers they all were and highly decorated showing The Nazis just how bad an American Soldier really is who already knew how to win Mentally in the face of the enemy !!!!!
Tremendous thanks to E.P. Small, and the team that assisted him in bringing this bit of our history to light. May God's blessings continue on the descendants of the men of the 333rd. I stand in awe of that handful of Belgian's who were determined to honor the sacrifice of The Eleven. Soldiers are but one color, GREEN....and we ALL bleed the same red.
It is so good to see these men receive some of the long overdue recognition they deserve for their heroic service to this country. God bless all the soldiers who fought and paid the ultimate sacrifice and to all those who suffered tremendously from the memories after the war. We salute you!
Thank you so much for bringing to light this extraordinary piece of history of American Black soldiers courageously fighting and dying during the Battle of the Bulge.
They’re dead, they can’t see your 11 USA emoji flags in a You Tube comment and if they could, how would that make them feel any better, about being brutally tortured and killed, bc their captain surrendered their unit to WAFFEN SS NAZI GERMANS. What would you think was going to happen to these black men by the hands of the Nazi Germans? Oh yeah they’ll just put them in a regular Pow camp with all the white allied Pows for the rest of the war and then they’ll just get to go home and everything will be lahdeedah? No these are the most racist people to have ever lived and you just handed them over, straight into their hands. That’s brilliant Einstein.
Our deepest thanks, love and utmost respect to all the soldiers who served defeating fascism, especially those brave black soldiers, our heroes. My dad told me stories of ww2 .He mentioned the black soldiers as artillery regiment. My dad spent 30 years as a merchent marine. He spent 17 days in a life boat after ship was hit by torpedo
The fact that they knew who were responsible and never held them responsible then for these men to go back to the US to be lynched by the American Nazis who were also never held responsible is disgusting. Plus the fact that the military tried to bury this massacre and that it took some in the community of Wereth to erect a memorial for these men , who were horrendously tortured, the tiny bit of shine that they do get.
This brought me to tears. This really hurt to watch and learn about. I can’t begin to express words which describe how I felt after watching this. I am a proud descendent of WWII hero's. Myself I am a retired Army Staff Officer and former Ranger. God Bless the memories of these men and those who made this important film.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.
I don't know why OverKnight and other African-Americans are making a big deal about African-Americans who fought in WWII. Who did they fight for? White power is who they fought for. They were not fighting for Africa or African descendants. WWII was the Roosevelt/Churchill/Stalin gang vs the Tojo/Hitler/Mussolini gang. Not only that, but the Wereth 11 surrendered. They were very naive to think the SS would not shoot them. You African-Americans who think African-Americans fighting for white power is something to revere really need to think that perspective through thoroughly.
As a black man that serves in the United States Army, I'm proud of the heritage of black men that fought and died for this country. I'm proud to wear the uniform despite the good and bad days. I'm inspired by these strong warriors 💪.
As a non black man that served in the us navy i am inspired by those who came before us and proud of those who serve after us, all of them. Once the bullets start flying all you care about is the person fighting beside you is an American. Any one of them that served has a place at my table anytime they choose. We are all cut from the same cloth. These guys just plain had it tougher than we did during those times. I am eternally grateful they had the courage to serve for the love of people they will never know.
When I was about 10 years old, we sat down for supper one evening. Before that my brother and I had been playing, acting about fighting Hitler, from something we had seen on TV, and when we were at the table, I put my arm up in the silly salute Hitler always did, at my brother across the table. Before I knew it I was sitting on the floor. My father was full German, I'm half German. Without any other word about my arm gesture, he told me to get up in my chair for supper. Nothing more said, I quickly got the message. He was very ashamed at what happened back then. I thank my father for showing me that it wasn't a game and as I grew up I felt ashamed as my father did of the weight upon our shoulders for what happened back then.

Very sad commentary on how black Soldiers were treated and remember. Those German officer should've served out their full terms. Those German officers were the epitome of evil and should've served out their Sentences. They should've been given no Mercy.
I am proud to have served with my Brothers in service of my country. Where their father and Mothers were born, no matter what element of race they came, I am proud to call them Brother. And the historical US military has not always treated them with respect, even as late as Viet Nam where black men were usually assigned point I have been told, most military people today whatever race, would reject such treatment. One of my USAF training officers was Sgt. Polk. One of the most genuine and respected people I have ever known. War is how ruthless men become wealthy. This must stop. Thank you for helping me know what I would have never known by me otherwise.
Very touching story... the best and worst of humans. War and disparity at home and abroad. The sacrifices made by civilians sheltering us soldiers. The torture before execution. The loyalty of soldiers to each other... “I’d have followed you into hell” the great effort to get a memorial erected. This is a superb inspiring... and resilient story. I won’t forget it. Thank you.
As a young Black kid I played on the mock Battle Grounds in Wreathham Peden Barrett, a US Military Base in Germany, those were just areas we Dependants were allowed to play mock soldering, I have always respected the stories I have always heard, even back then as a child!!
The discrimination of dark skinned American service men was an abomination that the US will never live down. Excellent documentary, thanks for sharing it. Lest We Forget these mighty heroes.
@@thatsjustmygame5148 that is a joke i must assume. the video is about ss killing black soldiers and you think it has nothing to do with race... watch the begining of this doc again about how black soldiers were treated in the american army specially in the south
Oh man I really love when I run into people like you who aren't very bright. First of all in that guy's comment he mentioned how blacks were treated poorly in their own country, not while they were Nazi POWs, so your first point is invalid. Second, Yes I understand blacks weren't treated right for a long time in American history, everybody knows that, you don't have to keep opening up old wounds. American politics and race have very very little to do with this. Its a documentary about these 11 brave men and the heroic sacrifices that they made for their country during ww2. One more thing, you probably don't know anything about how Japanese Americans were treated like dogs here in the U.S. during ww2. Yes they were thrown into internment camps and treated like slaves, over 1000 Japanese Americans also died while in those camps. Why didn't you mention anything about all of those Men and women?
@@thatsjustmygame5148 Oh here comes the whataboutism. Yes, I know about the concentration camps in the US, and how they treated the black and natives in the US army which confirms my point that there was a racial issue in the US army unless you think we should only mention race when it is black or whites. The reason I didn't mention that it is because this documentary is about black american soldiers. And about the nazis there is a part in the doc where a woman tries to clean and help the black POWs and the SS told her not to even touch them. The man in the the begining said that to the SS eyes they, the blacks, were worse than monkeys. So you first point about me being wrong on my first is wrong. But none of this is racism to you anyways. You probably also believe that the fact that they did not mention wereth in the trials was just a coincidence. You say there is no racism in US politics? So why are black called african americans, and whites called americans? why aren't called european americans, since those who really deserve to be called "americans" are those you call natives? So as you see racism is in politics in many but subtle ways.
I'd never heard anything of this sort before, I read the description felt the point watched the whole video 👏 Thanks again Janson, you continue to open my eyes 😂
I am forever grateful to the Langer family and the other villagers who constructed and maintain the monument. To the surviving residents of Stavelot, your families will always have a place in my heart, and memory. It is a fitting to note that SS Colonel Piper was paid a visit while at home by person or persons unknown, he never again saw the light of day.
Why?! did those Nazi bastards get reduced sentences?! That Peiper wasn't hung immediately was the first injustice of the war's end. The creators and producers of this film have done as good a justice as possible to honor the Black American contribution to defeating European Nazism. If they could have gone on a little more to explain why the perpetrators got off far better than what they did to so many others, that would have made the film that much better. I served with African-American officers and NCOs who, at the very beginning of my career in the early-1980s, taught me what I needed to learn about being Black in America as well as the untold histories of Black service from before the American Revolution through Vietnam. Everything else I've learnt and the civil rights work I've done since then is because I was given a gift (which the assignments guys saw as a punishment to a new LT) which profoundly and inalterably influenced me, by those fellow-Americans who taught me the truths I needed to know. My gratitude is far beyond what most Americans can comprehend.
It's been coveted. But, the problem has always been the fog of war. Intense emotions, fighting mostly to save oneself and his brothers in arms, rather than to kill the enemy. I heard once, that the Olympics were started so nations would send their best to compete in fighting skills without killing anyone on the battlefield. Now, if we went back to that line of thinking, we would see Biden, putin a zhe tossing spears, running, wrestling, boxing, fencing, and shooting. The best wins. Under these circumstances I got money on Putin. Joe is a distant last.
U.S ARMY AIRBORNE INFANTRYMAN RET. yes you are absolutely correct, I came across this story some years back, I always remembered it and never forgot these fine young American hero's, There should be a Movie made about this.
African-American troops have always been some of the best and bravest of any who served this country. They have served in every war we have ever had from Crispus Attucks in the Boston Massacre- one of the 1st Americans to die in the Revolutionary War to the Black soldiers who died in Afghanistan. Try looking up the history of all Black units in our military history- I am a former History teacher myself- No matter how bravely they served they caught shit from all sides, worst of all from our own. They were historically given the worst assignments, the nastiest jobs and yet they served and kicked ass along the way.
Excellent documentry this is not taught in school here in the U.S is shamefull and, the military covered this atrocity up when it was discovered, I saw a great story about this from Dr. Felton about a year a go.

Isn't it sad that after fighting for their country, blacks have to fight for their lives in their country years after these sacrifices whilst the descendants of the enemies, during the war, would be treated with dignity once they migrated to the United States?

I saw German prisoners free to move around the camp, unlike black soldiers, who were restricted. The Germans walked right into the doggone places like any white American. We were wearin' the same uniform, but we were excluded."
- Dempsey Jerome Travis, African-American war veteran, civil rights activist, and writer.
His book “Views from the Back of the Bus During WWII and Beyond” features a collection of stories from soldiers like him, brave men who fought for a country that still considered them second class citizens.
Thank you for sharing this story of these 11 brave young men. May they never be forgotten.
Crazy I’ve never heard this story before. Thank you for sharing! RIP to all the fallen soldiers.
Fighting for a country that despised the very ground they walked on. I say F that.
Excellent documentary!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank God for our heroes who were willing to lay down their lives so that we could live FREE!!!!!!!!!

No words... fantastic video, grim history and long overdue recognition... Appaling treatment of the African American soldiers by both the Germans and Americans...
The Wereth Elevens story is one of many and very glad its been told... RIP

Spot on!
Thank YOU SIR FOR YOUR SERVICE! God Bless You!
Appreciate that and thank you.@@suzannewilliamson7637
Same here in Holland, with many things 😕 Thankyou for your service 😊💪🏼
Do you mean, UNGRATEFUL nation?
Thank you for a very fine video! Thank you to those in Belgium for honoring the memory of these men.
I Research WW11 battles all the time just seeing if I could actually find out how, what battle on March 4th 1945 my grandfather was KIA. I come across this. Makes me sick to my stomach that this is the first time I'm learning about this horrible massacre. May these brave men rest in peace.
Did not knew this story. Thanks for sharing and for this impressive short documentary.
This was a wonderful tribute. God bless the fair-minded people of this world. Thank you.
I am a public high school teacher and I am definitely going to be showing this movie. I knew of this event prior to watching this, this is one of the untold stories that needs to be told. It was not mentioned in the movie but the Germans knew of the 333rd and had a genuine dislike for them because of their skill as well as their color.
I truly hope so! A lot of TRUE History is being erased from OUR OWN books. God Bless You!
This is by far one of the best WW2 video/doc I’ve ever watched, brave men who continued to fight for freedom even after being subject to racial abuse to the point of being left behind.
check out videis about the 442nd from Hawaii. they went through equal mistreatment.

Eloquently said so well.
Very well spoken! Thank you. Greets from the Netherlands, T.

Yeah, right
That has nothing to do with the videos topic. You people need to quit bringing race into everything
Thank you all for your service!

Why?! did those Nazi bastards get reduced sentences?!

Isn't it sad that after fighting for their country, blacks have to fight for their lives in their country years after these sacrifices whilst the descendants of the enemies, during the war, would be treated with dignity once they migrated to the United States?

Many fought racism and the enemy shoulder to shoulder with their white comrades alongside the British and the Canadians till the end when Allies entered Germany in 1945. We must never forget their sacrifices. My uncle fought and died in last days of War (1965 India Pakistan War). War is evil but people still fight for a cause against evil. Malmedy massacre during Battle of the Bulge just goes to show how brutal and savage 3rd Reich Nazis were esp the SS. We Indians lost 95 to 1K soldiers fighting Nazis Italians and Japanese during WWII. Respects from India.
These are of all brave men, 17, 18 year olds. Many nationalities together fighting for world FREENOM. Thank you all. My respect for all you've sacrificed.
Do you feel “free” lol
I got to watch tis after being pointed here by Woody of @WW2TV where he was interviewing Robert Child.
When they ran out of ammo, they fought with knives.
Just like the men who saw to it that our flag should never fall at Ft. Sumter. To stand or die trying against the odds, these men personified what it means to be an American.
A white American or a black American?
You yanks have no idea how stupid you sound talking all that Stars and Stripes nonsense .

I think you mean Ft McHenry. 🇺🇸
Ft Sumpter is in SC. It was taken from the Union to begin The Civil War, and then retaken later by the Union. (Part of the retaking is depicted in the movie "Glory." The movie about the 54th Massachusetts, All black infantry Unit.)
Ft McHenry is in Baltimore. It's the fort that Stood through the night against bombardment by the whole British Navy in the War of 1812. Its depicted, and honored with the National Anthem. ("The Star Spangled Banner.")
@@temitoluwani5000 ,. An American!
We are a nation of the most diverse population on earth. We are the world's melting Pot, but we are "ALL AMERICAN.(" We all bleed red, white, and blue.")
Take your racist opinions back to Britain where they belong. The British are historically the most racist country on earth. (You've oppressed and repressed every race on earth at one time or another.)
@@unitedwestand5100 Actually Ft. SUMTER was NOT depicted in the movie Glory. The 54th Massachusetts assaulted Battery Wagner (sometimes referred to as Ft. Wagner). Ft. Sumter was eventually retaken when Charleston, SC fell and the action of the 54th Mass., and other units, were all fighting to recapture the city.
Great content. Thank you for bringing it to us.
I cried but was proud the whole movie…
