Thank you! As newlyweds in the 60s my husband and I traveled on route 66 and I remember seeing that sign. It made me feel safe seeing that sign because it meant there were people in the area. I love your art work! It's similar to my style of drawing. 😉 Thanks again!
I been there thousands of times of the last 30 years it's a great little place to see and a historical landmark and will always be a great place to stretch my legs on the way to Laughlin
As I recall, in the 50’s a gas station existed on the south side of the highway, directly across from the motel. I was just a young kid, but I always remembered my father stopping in that gas station (circa 1955) to get gas and some water. We were driving across the country and we were low on drinking water. My father ask the station owner if he would fill a 1 gallon container with water for us. He said sure, but charged my father $1 for the water. The station owner said that every drop of water they had there had to be trucked in.
I knew Buster Burris, he was truly a desert rat and character with a heart as big as the Mojave. The story Buster told of demolishing the other two closed abandoned gas stations/cafes/motels across the street from Roy's was due to his property tax bill. When he got his bill one year he thought it was outrageous for the two closed properties, he had someone from the tax assessor's office come out to view the properties. Buster was told that even though closed and abandoned the properties were "developed" and were subject to the higher tax rate. Buster asked 'if them old buildings weren't there, I would pay less taxes?' The assessor said yes. Buster told him to hold on, then went over to Roy's, fired up his bulldozer, knocked both buildings down and told the assessor to send him a damn new bill. Another Buster Burris story, The California Bureau of Auto Repair had received a compliant about shoddy repairs on a customer's car and sent a field agent out to investigate. Most days Buster wore a big ass six-shooter in a classic old west holster. The field rep opened the gate to the repair yard and ol' Buster was standing there with his hand resting on the grip of that hand cannon. Field rep introduced himself, Buster glared at him and growled, 'you are one of them f'ing guvment revanooers ain't you?'. The field rep, backed up, told Buster, 'Sir, I think we will resolve this issue by mail.' The rep got into his car and drove away. This story is true, the field rep told me this story himself and I later confirmed it Buster. Buster laughed and with a twinkle in his eye said, 'I sure had that boy a-going.'
I was heading from Tucson to san diego in 01 and decided to take the little 66 bypass, and stopped at roy's which oddly was open. Staff was a couple guys hanging out, and I ordered a BLT which was something easy to make, and it was fine. I was surprised they were able to hang on, which I guess a short time later that wasn't the case. Interesting place, walked around and checked it out before heading on. The lava beds and crater nearby looked like they had recently erupted, a strange sight in that part of the desert.
@@tommurphy4307 Maybe a little, but I hadn't been on rt. 66 before so got to check a little piece of it out. Along the way found another former gas station, mainly just ruins. It was fun to explore.
I broke down on the side of the 15 right by the post office. Had to climb under a barb wired fence right after they closed and the lady in the post office ignored me and my dog trying to flag to her down for help to get home quicker. Funny town that's for sure!
Amboy is often cited as one of a few towns that were the inspiration for Radiator Springs. The history of Radiator Springs, as given by the movie, matches up with that of Amboy very well, as both were replaced by I-40. Here's a clip from the movie if you're interested. th-cam.com/video/4LFYtpLrAZw/w-d-xo.html

It's a shame about HWY 66. The regional Government representation (US Congress and SB County) are useless Republicans who couldn't be bothered in it's maintenance for decades. It's now closed East of Kelbaker Rd.. In 1995, a supposed cook of "Roys" was actually an agent from San Jose, CA for the Waste Management Inc. Bolo/Rail-Cycle project effort. He was a felon hired by WMX for his communication skills. He wiretapped the opposition which was the Cadiz farm that was East of there. It was a two year Countywide battle to stop what would then be one of the World's largest MegaDumps at 400 million tons. The "cook" was caught, convicted and sung all about the corruption of the County government to save his skin. He had rounded up about two dozen residents of Amboy, Cadiz, Danby and Essex to represent the "locals" in support of the MegaDump. It was all over by 1998.
yes- we need more USEFUL democrats like gavin newsom- he's good at keeping fuel prices high, taking IC- motored cars away from us, and forcing people to take vaccinations that don't do a damned thing but make people sick. bring it on.

Oh boy Amboy ! I was there.
Amboy is our favorite spot on Rt66 in the west, traveled it as a kid in the sixties.
That’s really neat
i loved lake dolores/rock-a-hoola near newberry springs. too bad its gone- the water trapezes were a blast.

@@zachvisser I just found that out now lol
one of the earlier comments said no water in amboy- why would that inspire a place called radiator springs??
do you think this is the city that the cars movie was based off of?? (radiator springs)
Yes actually. It is a really similar town

the google question machine claims its based on route 66 between kingman and amarillo- 1000miles. i think they make up shit to impress idiots.
The official town is in Seligman,AZ.
The old barber there was the one that caused the whole movie to be produced when he shared his story of the town
DON'T FORGET i-15/fort irwin is right there in yermo/newberry springs- so its not a ghost town.
👍
