This concert, recorded by Radio France on September 8, 1969 features a virtual who’s who of prominent names in Jazz during the 1960s. It was just re-broadcast over a two-night period on December 16 and 17, and so the announcements, lineup and numbers are announced in French.
    (pastdaily).
Thaddeus Joseph Jones (March 28, 1923 - August 20, 1986) was an American jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader who has been called "one of the all-time greatest jazz trumpet soloists".
Melvin Sokoloff (May 10, 1929 - February 2, 1990), known professionally as Mel Lewis, was an American jazz drummer, session musician, professor, and author. He received fourteen Grammy Award nominations.

This recording (radio broadcast) that was only briefly put out on CD is my favorite recording of Mel. The mics on the drums and his playing is perfection. Too bad that can't release this properly on vinyl or digital.

Is that the Live in Paris 1969 (Vol1) on Royal Jazz? Assume there was never a release covering the whole show?

Jazz micro brewed and aged until it became beside itself. As a banner extension of the core groups, and forms of Jazz, this joyful, lovingly, and reverently curated (true to the form of the traditions) group and material was updated to it's most MODERN element at the time... AND hasn't aged a DAY!

A testament to the era of the global, world-class U.S.A. SUPER BANDS in various genres in Jazz. The provenance of the roll call of brilliant players is priceless. An organization of such premium musicians would be impossible to source out in today's marketplace. Although we have hope in many of the young musicians out there now, the times and places, and then the mindsets and scenes, have all yet since morphed and fluxed. Wow what we once had; a group, among several others at the time, exemplary of the epitome of 'the way we were'! HEADY!!!

Does anyone know where the lick at 1:18:30 is from? Roland reuses it several times throughout the concert and it generates a reaction from the audience/band

It’s from the count Basie tune April in Paris - probably because thad played a trumpet solo on that recording
