It's debatable whether the different varieties of Occitan are languages by itself or dialects, or even if Occitan and Catalan really are different languages or close enough to be considered the same one. I don't have an opinion on the topic myself, but I want to learn both and more than one different variety of each of them, so maybe in the future I'll be able to tell.
Here's what everyone misses: this is close to Old and Middle French. It sounds Spanish...but it is true old French. It has more words in common with Spanish than Parisienne does--the languages do have common ancestors. Too many make remarks about languages they do not understand.
It does not sound Spanish at all, it sounds more Catalan-French. It's got sounds and words present in Catalan, as well as sounds and words (I suppose) present in French. But, by no means, it sounds Spanish. I speak Catalan, and I understood only the words that are identical or similar to Catalan only.
I hope France's educational system stops suppressing schools from teaching Gascon and other regional languages in France like Breton, Occitanien, Provencal, Basque, Lenga d'oc, Alsatian, Catalan, Corsican, and Gallo.

Ezekiel Elkin that isn't true, Occitan-Romance languages (Occitan, Catalan and Aragonese) are as closely related to the Ibero-Romance languages (Portuguese, Galician, Astur-Leonese, Castilian) as they are to the Gallo-Romances languages (Oïl languages, including French, and Franco-Provençal), and of course are much closer to them than they are to Romanian or Tuscan, since Ibero-Romance, Gallo-Romance, Gallo-Italic and Occitano-Romance languages form the Western Romance languages, Tuscan is part of the Italo-Dalmatian languages, in the middle between Western and Eastern Romance languages, and Romanian is an Eastern Romance language, which diverged really long ago from the Western Romance. As a Castillian speaker learning Occitan (the Aranese dialect) I find it quite easy and similar to Castillian, I almost can see the dialect continuum that existed before they startes divergin more than a thousand years ago between the Latin spoken here and the Latin spoken in nowadays France.
