  • Distance runner and former Featured Performer guest of The Physical Performance Show Zane Robertson has been banned from all sport for eight years following a positive test for Erythropoietin (EPO) and providing false documentation in his defence.
Zane was tested at the UK’s Great Manchester Run in May 2022. His sample returned a positive result for EPO, which was later confirmed through B-sample testing. An additional charge of Tampering with Doping Control was added when documents submitted by Mr Robertson in his defence were found to be fraudulent.
Show host @brad_beer sat down to learn more about the situation.

I appreciate Zane's honesty even if it came a little late. Many mistakes were made, but I hope he can forgive and heal. Running is a part of life it is NOT LIFE. I hope he can get the help and support he needs to live a long, healthy and happy life. Best if luck Zane.

I'm not sure if doing these podcasts is the best option for Zane post-coviction. He needs a PR person who could've drafted him a short statement he could release before moving on with his lifer after running. I've listened to two of these now and they're a rough listen.

This is a tough listen. Wish Brad had pushed back on some of the answers and lack of Zane’s genuine acceptance of his actions. Feel like he used your podcast to wash his reputation.

Dozens of Kenyans are serving bans for doping, so it's not really a shock that a white guy does it too. It's seems fair to legalize EPO and put a limit on hematocrit like 50% while testing for plasma expanders. An athlete who is over like 51% would just sit out a race or draw some blood to get below 50%.

its not a good example or standard to set for young people to feel like they need to take a bunch of drugs to be able to be competitive. unless you want these drugs to be legalized so that they can be administered, sourced and monitored more safely.

@@visceraeyes525 if the rules can't be enforced, then cheaters win. That's the reality and message being sent to young athletes. If labs are using the method developed in 2021 by Martin et al, then detection window is 48 to 72 hours after maintenance microdose of EPO. If not, it's only 12 to 18 hours according to a 2011 review paper. WADA allows athletes to miss 2 tests per year and specify a 1 hour time window each day. Atypical ABP requires all 3 experts to agree or nothing happens, and according to scientific literature altitude is a confounding factor.

You have to understand the reason it is banned is because it's a dangerous drug with short and long term complications. If it were like aspirin it wouldn't be illegal.

Really feel for Zane, as I've never really heard the 'inside story' on this issue - so wish him all the very best going forward.
Did make me wonder though that now in so many sports it's ok to be male and compete against females & break all sorts of female records because you have an unfair body advantage. Even IOC condoned it & Athletics NZ sent Hubbard to the Olympics - he/she failed to perform on the day, but that is unbelievably a wrong stance in so many ways by them - I can't help but see some parallels & hypocrisy by the governing bodies

Honestly what I got was this - ‘everyone has been doping for absolutely ages, I finally thought I would try & even the odds by doing it myself but unfortunately I was just unlucky enough to get caught’

  • @PerryScanlon
    @PerryScanlon ปีที่แล้ว +4

These professionals are in a difficult position because it might not be possible to compete with those using EPO and possibly AICAR, and WADA rules and science make it unreliable to eliminate EPO, nearly impossible to catch AICAR if anybody can afford to use it.

tough to listen too I do feel that he's making excuses to take peds . And we wouldn't be having this conversation if he hadn't been caught !!!! No one is perfect I mean since 2011 over 50 plus Kenyan athletes are serving bans don't take drugs . He got caught and yep that was it really . But I do hope he gets support for mental health and suicide isn't a joke . Bro take care kia kaha

I think we need to be realistic where any money at all is involved there will be people wanting to win for their livelihoods their kids etc. There's no money in anti doping so it will be a battle that can never be won.

Sad to hear his answer that he doesn't believe that anyone can win a major marathon without drugs. Hopefully Kipoche will not be the Lance Armstrong of running and go from hero to villain. 😢

    • @charliewatkins4571

It's basic math. You will always run at least 3% faster on EPO. And yes, that leaves plenty of room for many of the elite runners we know by name to be clean. Obviously if you are at an alite age grade of 93-95% age grade, you can definately be clean, although many aren't.
