What's honestly a shame is that it's not the writers who horribly messed up Shadow's character in the comics, it's SEGA themselves. According to (I think) Ian himself, that one infamous Shadow scene initially played out differently, but due to SEGA's ridiculously tight mandates on the character, they were forced to change the scene to what we have now. The mandates are also the biggest reason behind why we don't really see Shadow all that much throughout the comics. The writers love him, but they can't write him in the way that they (and we) want.
This video felt so much longer than 16 minutes long in the BEST way possible! Ive always found the sonic fan base to be very polarized about most sonic media (understandable to an extent given how vast the franchise is genre and tone -wise) and the idw comics are certainly no exception. it feels so so gratifying to hear someone express their love for the comics (of which i share) but also have a nuanced take including fair criticism!! I agree so hard with everything you said here and I'm honestly shocked you don’t have more subscribers! This video script is seriously tight- you articulate your points in a really engaging way!! It's been a little bit since you've posted, i hope you continue to make videos but if not, thank you for the ones you did make! I'm excited to peruse the rest of your catalog.
I think the only two things I disagree with is that I actually feel like the comic actually makes the Deadly Six, or at least Zavok, far more interesting than he's been in the games. I actually find him kinda intimidating at points. And I feel like Dr. Starline's arc wasn't really that rushed since recent issues, mainly the recent Bad Guys and Imposter Syndrome miniseries, have put a lot of focus on Starline transitioning from just a lacky to someone who wants to improve on Eggman's flaws, which I think was what Ian intended for the character all along. Frankly, he's my favorite original character in the comic so far. But I do see where you're coming from. Ultimately, I agree, the IDW comics, when they first debuted, were the best things to happen to Sonic since Sonic Generations, and so far, have still been remained at a consistent quality, and I'm really interested to see where things go after issue #50 gets here.
I finally got around to watching this! So glad you've enjoyed the book as much as I have, I just finished reading Imposter Syndrome and really liked it. Can't wait for the trade paperback with #50 to release.
Shadow's characterisation is, unfortunately, a SEGA mandate. Shadow is not allowed to be more than a Vegeta 2.0 now which SUCKS, and even Ian has openly stated that he is a little frustrated that they can't make Shadow more. He has to be a loner, he has to be emo, he's not allowed to have friends (that is to say, he's not allowed to express understanding OR appreciation of having friends; for him he has no friends, and unfortunately this portrayal of Shadow is a SEGA mandate, so the writers can't do much about it AT ALL. They are very constrained and restricted on how to portray and explore Shadow in IDW). Who knows, maybe now with Shadow Generations coming out this October, the writers will be able to explore him more and portray him better. I'm not counting my flickies though.
Always cool to see someone give the IDW Sonic comics some love. I still favor the Archie Sonic comics more (grew up with them), but the IDW Sonic comics have been extremely solid in their own ways, but it still feels as if they go under the radar of many Sonic fans. Not sure if that's just because it's a comic book medium and people don't want to read, but you can tell there's a lot of love and passion put into the comics due to the creative staff being big Sonic fans.
I personally hope we see Sage make her debut in the IDW comics. The comics take place after Forces. Though, the writers would need to do a bit of work to implement the events of Sonic Frontiers into the current IDW timeline. The events and timeline match up, the few questions are rather-when and how Sage would be implemented into the IDW storyline. Ian has done an incredible job regardless, of humanizing the mad doctor that is usually as callous and cruel as his creations. If she does appear in the comics, I’d be curious to how she would interact with friends and foes post Frontiers.
Maybe they’ll make an arc adapting the events of Frontiers in the future. If they did it with Team Racing, I don’t see why not. Also, I’d love to see Sage interact with Belle. Maybe it would show that part of Mr. Tinker still lives within Dr. Eggman, given how she made him view his creations in a whole new light.
it's so nice to see you back in the swing of things!!!!!!!! i loved your videos so much when i was 12 and i'd go back to them constantly for years. your appreciation of sonic is something that is equally infectious and thoughtful, and your perspective is one that resonates with me a lot. gurren lagann is also like one of THE foundational pieces of media from my teenage years and i would not have experienced it without hearing you talk about it, and i cannot thank you enough for that. i'm turning 20 this year and if anything i feel like my appreciation of sonic has only grown. since i've been an active participant in sonic's fandom and the discourse surrounding it there hasn't really been a time as hopeful as this that i've been around for. even if forces wasn't great i'm really happy for the kids growing up with sonic today, and i feel very optimistic about what the future has in store
13:03 Sonic X wasn’t that bad. Honestly it did the SA1 arc better than the game did but I’m sure if it ever got a proper remake with more care poured into it then it could one up it.
4:51 "I'm aware of the general consensus that Sonic has great characterization in Unleashed, but I highly disagree. He becomes a much more boring version of himself inmediately after the opening cutscene." You're welcome.
The IDW is so much fun: the art style was great and was lovable, the story was fun and especially the metal virus arc made me feel so many emotions that no other comic has made me feel, the characters where almost all fixed after Sega fucked the, up and EVERY SINGLE NEW CHARACTER IS GREAT!! The designs and everything about them was just new and stylized. And the art was the best part! Every scene has wallpaper/pfp level of style and fun and it is all just like candy for the eyes! The dialogue is SA2 level great and the characters work great together!
In my opinion, and as I’ve been gushing to my friend, the IDW comics aren’t anything ground breaking but they’re stable, there’s things to talk about and enjoy and I feel like there’s more to it then the recent mainline games and shows. There’s something to be said about just enjoying something. I keep telling my friend that it’s simply satisfying seeing these characters be treated competently. Oh the other hand I do adore where they’re taking this story. Is it a little rushed? Sure. Do I enjoy near every panel of it still? Heck yeah. I hadn’t entirely noticed Tails hadn’t got much development because I was just happy to see him implementing his established development in these past arcs but now I think it’s starting to drag a little and I hope they take advantage of this coming arc to start really developing him. And of course Starline and the deadly six/mostly just Zavok have gotten their due diligence in the issues after the release of this video.
Excellent video once again, it’s been a long time so I forgot how much I enjoyed your videos! Although I’ll always hold Ian’s Archie run as the peak of the series narrative I’m curious to see how IDW compares to it & I think this video is my incentive to finally check it out. Hopefully this love for the character and story is really there in Frontiers now that Ian Flynn is behind it.
Well the recent IDW Sonic's free comic book issue opened up some potential story ideas for Knuckles with him learning more about the mysteries/secrets of Angel Island and whatever that could lead to. As for Shadow one idea I've got is him, Rouge, and Omega(Team Dark) go search for the Chaos emeralds before someone like Eggman or Starline find them again.
While Archie will always hold a special place in my heart for how weird and expansive they were, the IDW run is really interesting in how much more streamlined the storytelling is. It feels like the world is less fleshed out but its limitations make the characters feel more consistent. Except Shadow. Shadow just acts like a dick in this run. Great video man!
In my opinion, metal virus arc was very regular to me, it started good and it had good concepts, but then it was rushed and also , after all tha virus drama, apparently everyone acts as if nothing happaned.
Great video.👍 Say it'd be too generic, but I would love if we got a long game with the plot of the IDW comics. Mostly the small Neo Metal Sonic arc to the Metal Virus arc. Would be amazing, and even better to add a few new bells and whistles for gameplay purposes.
In Idw comics, I which Ken Penders will just give up so they can add Shade The Echidna. That way they can make another arc that can compete or top the Metal Viru, as Well if they Add Cosmo the Seedrian and new Metarex and have like a battle between planets, I don't know exactly but I want Shade, and Cosmo lol
too bad its doing awful in sales, and the zombot arc was good until it got dragged out to the point i dropped it to read back archie sonic then came back after the zombot arc ended

I like the deadly six, and yea the comics makes them more cooler in my opinion
Just started and caught up with the IDW comics myself, so I love hearing other's fresh thoughts about it. Great takes!

I really appreciate you using Intervals as the background music. They're a band I would love to see contribute to a Sonic game soundtrack.

Who wrote The murder of sonic the hedgehog?.

Honestly, I like Boom Amy. She was pretty damn funny

Sonic team should really consider adding these characters in the next game 💯

Honestly these comics are the best Sonic content we have had in years alongside the movies

sorry to tell you shadow can't go forwards because of SEGA mandates and knuckles might get his own ark about exploring angle island
This is a good review. I think the comics are average, but a nice change of pace from the years of tonally confused games for years and years.
Great video.👍

Clifford Isle
Good video why does he sound like hes constipated or holding his nose tho
Wonder if he knows that Sonic Frontiers’ story is being spearheaded by Ian Flynn?
I had like 4 idw vols in my amazon cart and this video made me hit purchase

Roger Craig smith is easily the best voice of sonic. I have no idea what makes you think he’s miscast
too bad its doing awful in sales, and the zombot arc was good until it got dragged out to the point i dropped it to read back archie sonic then came back after the zombot arc ended
It's doing awful in sales? I thought that it's doing pretty well.
si
So the comics are now better than the games?
Why are the games crap now & not as good as the comics????
Stupid producers at SEGA
