While Lanolin is definitely her own character, it's pretty clear she's meant to fill the role Sally played as the level-headed field commander, just without all the baggage from Archie and the shipping drama. But he said that fro IDW Amy too soooooooo..........Whats happening here is Amy and Lanolin just clones of Sally cuz Ian refuses to be original? Or is Nick as usual over analyzing characters as he always does?
@@somedudewhodraws9377 I don't think so. IDW Amy was kind of written into that spot because there was a role that needed filling and there wasn't really a character for it, and even in the story they made it clear Amy wasn't the right fit for the part. Lanolin's personality is much closer to Sally's, both being more level-headed and strategic-minded commander types to play off of Sonic and Tangle's more impulsive personalities. That said, while Lanolin definitely fits the same archetype as Sally at first glance, the details are still different enough that she can stand as her own character, and hopefully she'll become more distinct with further stories, just like how Surge grew more different from Scourge the more we saw of her.

@@kenanmeral8891 Scourge honestly makes more sense as a person that Surge. Surge is a looney toons villain stuck being a mockery of the real thing, which is ironic since that idea canonically breaks Scourge's mind.
Tangle is a Sally clone because of similar hairstyles. Amy is a Sally clone because she has leadership skills. Lanolin is a Sally clone because she has tactical skills. Blaze is a Sally clone because she's a princess. Anytime a female Sonic character is put into a good light, they're automatically measured up to Sally. Without biting my head off, I want to ask a question. Does anyone understand the frustration some fans have with measuring a character's worth by comparing them to Sally Acorn?
I definitely understand the frustration of measuring them up to Sally, but that's mostly because SEGA had to take out Sally in the first place. A lot of us fans want her back. She was great in the SATAM show AND the Archie comics (both pre-reboot and post-reboot). And the writers also love her as well, but SEGA doesn't really care and forces the writers to "make up for it" with other characters such as Amy being the resistance leader/organizer during Forces (Knuckles was the commander), but it felt strangely out of place for her to be like that. It just makes us miss Sally all the more... :( (Hopefully this answered your question. This is just my personal perspective on the matter, so I may be completely wrong.)
Yeh Nick is obsessed with Archie Sonic and he needs to stop comparing the 2 as IDW Sonic is basically a restart of Archie altogether or rather a Reboot. The way he always jumps to Sally compared with Lanolin and Amy is freaking disturbing the way he talks about it.
Yeah, it's never "Elise is a Sally clone because she's a princess who is written as weak and helpless for a not insignificant amount of time so Sonic can look good" or "Knuckles is a Sally clone because he smacks Sonic clean across the face".
My personal take is that Sally showed what a good female character could be, then vanished. The reason so many people compare to her is because she left a positive impact.
idk. Whisper has been incredibly well received and I've never seen a comparison there (also this comment is the 1st time im hearing about Tangle comparisons too).
Idk why but that panel of Tangle rolling down the hill with her tail really makes me want to see a game with these newer characters. Idk her moments just fit so well in a game design aesthetic sense haha
As someone who does have their gripes with the Sally comparisons fans make, I do understand that it comes from a place of longing for characters that older fans have had a lot of time to attach themselves to, and not necessarily from a place of snobbish nitpicking that other fan bases would be more inclined towards. My main issue is that, outside of Lanolin, most of these comparisons are of very superficial traits, I mean, people saying Jewel is a Sally clone? How is she? They are decidedly different personality wise, and Jewel isn’t even leading a rebel group, more like a damage control clean up crew tasked with rebuilding places eggman nukes to the ground. This leaves really only one comparison to be made between Sally and Jewel, which is that they are both leaders of an organization and are both female characters. Really shallow surface level comparison that disservice’s Sally as a character, and only serves to undermine Jewel’s credibility as a distinct character. Which is why the constant comparisons fans make with Sally and “female character of the week” leaves a sometimes sour taste in my mouth. It’s like some fans can’t let characters share a similar role or archetype, even if they’re as different as can be, fans will reach and they will reach HARD to find a connection and complain the character isn’t original enough and a carbon copy clone of another character that’s been around longer and thus more popular. Apologies for the rant but it’s been bugging me for awhile and it has absolutely nothing to do with Lanolin. Mainly just people comparing Tangle, Amy, Rouge, and Jewel that irks me to no end.
I agree with you, constantly comparing Sally to any female character in IDW feels annoying if not down right obsessive, I get that Sally is loved by older fans but can you imagine what it's like to be a new one and not like her? I got into sonic because of Unleash and sonic heroes, I always heard of Sally but the Satam cartoon never aired in my country while I was growing up nor did the local comic book in my town sell the Archie comics, everything I knew about Sally and the freedom fighters was told to me by TH-cam I occasionally came across (heck I thought scourge was a fan made character because the idea of a evil sonic that was green and used sunglasses with a leather jacket just sounded... fan made at the time) I like IDW Sonic, a lot of people do but this constant comparison with Archie just isn't nice, the IDW comics are canon now and that's the reality older fans of the comic have to accept. I saw some toxic behavior from Archie fans (one in particular just felt biased and hateful of the official canon) but while I can't fully blame them for acting this way, I also can't defend them for this unhealthy gatekeeping
@@mateushenriquepinheiro3197 same, I only read the post genesis wave Archie comics, I wasn’t really attached to Sally as much as the other characters (hell even Scourge rubbed off on me, all things considered) But oftentimes the sonic fandom tends to be very particular about what they want and yet also not know what they want either. To the point where it feels like fans don’t actually want new Sonic games, shows, etc. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt and assume they just want to have more of the characters they really like, which is something I can understand and sympathize with. But it’s also kind of annoying how much it happens 😅

@@slimeprivilege Yes it does. Eggman even strikes the same pose after firing it as is done in the anime. (made a mistake if you were talking about the SEGA Dreamcast Visual Memory Unit)
You know, I never considered her to be a Sally archetype...but the people who do must have some...words. Especially after all they've said about IDW Amy.
Sally fans are weird to me, but I don't have any nostalgia for Satam or Archie to begin with. I only started reading the Archie comics last year and I don't see what the big deal is, there is good characterization at times but the comic never stays consistent enough or even grounded for it to work, I got confused so many times while reading it and the art style changes didn't help at all. It's like the comic itself couldn't decide what it wanted to be half of the time
Well, it's at least comforting to know Sally and the Freedom Fighters are still remembered by creators as well as fans and they are inspirations for new characters in the comics.
I honestly just hope that SEGA doesn’t try to get rid of these characters, too. (I don’t know what’s gonna happen with the Freedom Fighters, but I know we’ve still got strong characters no matter what.)
I swear they do this every single time, constant comparisons with Archie comic characters are just annoying to me right now. The moment I saw someone compare Saint Geoffrey to Rough just because they are skunks! Most of these comparisons are surface level at best, but since the Archie comics came first and we're around longer, I guess they feel obligated to make these comparisons I don't want to offend any Archie fan, but the way they talk about bring these characters back just doesn't sit with me. I like the freedom fighters but that doesn't mean I want them back, it feels wrong for me to say that because so many people like them but I am of the opinion that Sonic doesn't need then to work in the modern age and that their time has passed. Hopefully everyone can understand what I'm saying, I don't want to be crucified in the comments for just saying my opinion
@@Whatcha_ Rough is a IDW character, he and his brother are skunks with their gimmick being that their are always making rhymes revolving around their names Example: "You think you're tough..." "We're gonna make you humble..." "Get ready for Rough & Tumble!"

Yeah, right? Any attempt to put them in universe has always felt weird to me, outside of maybe the movie cannon, but that's adapting an entirely different kind of ring
18:15 oh my god I love this, especially Silver's reaction. I think those were the super big annoying mini boss like ones from Heroes? Looks like it, anyways Silver great whenever he shows up in this... you did most of the work... just... how? Love that yeah they are noticing how powerful Amy is, like Mighty sure they're both speed characters... but you don't want to be on the receiving end of one of their attacks... dang... now I want Mighty and Ray to get in on these comics.
Rings don't show up in IDW because they are apparently non-canon in the current continuity, reading between the lines. Ian first said he didn't see them as anything but game mechanics in several episodes of his podcast. When Prime (which is as canon as IDW) came out he kind of danced around it for a while. Eventually pointing out how the Rings were only in the first episode, flashbacks to those events, and then completely vanished. Seemingly implying that Prime's use of the rings was a continuity error that was fixed but the first episode (and flashbacks to it's time frame) was the exception to it being fixed. So, it looks like for now rings only exist in the games until Sega changes their minds.
Lanolin was also the name of a female sheep in the Jim Davis comic strip "US Acres," and that's the only thing I think about when I see anything related to this new character.
Glad I'm not the only one. I can only assume that since it's been forever since U.S. Acres got any sort of anything, Jim Davis's trademarks have expired. Sega isn't stupid enough to step on Paws Inc. I'm honestly surprised Ian & Evan got away with it -- MOST Americans of a certain age remember Garfield's Lanolin!
Oh that mystery object looks a heck of a lot like the Dreamcast MMUs. They're like Memory Cards, but you can also play small games or manage the memory with the buttons.
3:53 I just noticed Lanolin's left hand is missing in this shot! 14:35 I love how Tangle is drawn here. Her exaggerated cartoonishness gives me Teen Titan vibes.
I'm a diehard Sally fan & personally think Lanolin is a good character with lots of potential. I also like the irony of a sheep being a leader. I just hope it's not foreshadowing for a"sacrificial lamb" moment.
I agree with that last part, solely on the grounds that a hero's sacrifice would be too much dignity for her. She needs to survive, so she can face the consequences of her shameful actions with sincere regret and humility.
@@brandonprater4613 Hey, you die as you live. Starline died a loser because he lived as a loser, and he was a loser because he was arrogant and chose a loser as his hero. Lanolin is kinda like a Starline for Sonic and Friends. She was inspired by them, she became disillusioned to them by their faults, and she automatically started acting like she knew better than them despite being far less experienced; this shows that she is arrogant. Unlike Eggman, though, Sonic and Friends are winners. Still, her arrogance is what is pulling her toward the path of a loser. It's one thing to make a mistake; it's another to not admit the mistake. Until she can swallow her pride, as Sonic and Tangle did in the near past, the disdain toward her from the fans will continue strong. Some may continue to hate her even afterward, but reasonable people will forgive her if that happens.

Maggie being paired with Lanolin is definitely a nice touch. This wisp obviously is influenced by sound, maybe the wispon cowbell can create different frequencies to make different effects.

I love the idea of Lanolin she is such and good character and does represent some characteristics from sally like how she wants to protect people and the ones she cares about it will take some time to get use to her since sally has been a favorite of mine but honestly I'm already loving Lanolin
Was Sally the least experienced of her friends? Was she cruel and callous to them? Was she a total nimrod? Did she blindly trust strangers? Was she pompous? Did she act like a "bad cop"? Did she almost get a lot of innocent bystanders killed in a ruthless pursuit of justice? Were her friends unable to trust her be? Did she lack literally ANY AND ALL likable qualities whatsoever?! Are we even looking at the same character?!
Well it make sense given the fact that Ian find inspiration in all sonic media espically due to his late run on Archie after the penders fiasco with Sega headquarters
never though about it (since the feats don't compare) but Lanolin being put in Sally's role can be pretty good Mainly freeing Amy from that (she REALLY didn't fit being the leader for what they showed in the games) but also because a character that could keep up with Sonic AND slow him down (not with romance) is needed; 06 Shadow is pratically dead so yeah ... he is out of question now let's see what comes from this, always hyped for the future of IDW (hope it lasts long) and these characters (like Sega let me see Tangle in the gamed already)

Regarding pairing a sheep and a wolf together, I've said it before elsewhere, and most recently on Jehtt's June 10, 2023 video, but *every* major Sonic team includes an animal and that animal's natural predator, except for Team Dark. For the Hooligans, it's debatable based on what you consider Nack/Fang and Bean to be: weasels eat ducks, but jerboas don't eat birds, and wolves don't often have overlapping territory with woodpeckers. EDIT: I gave the date to help myself refind that video if needed. TH-cam's search features suck.
A heads up for issue 59/60 if it doesn't get brought up; according to a recent Bumblekast Mini with KaiZenAmen, Evan spoke too quickly about Shadow's characterization being loosened up. The story had to be re-written after being shipped off to SEGA, including limiting his presence in the story.

Anyway, fair and valid points and opinions all around, I can see where you’re coming from in regards to the Freedom Fighters, which I could agree with too, to a certain extent, I will look forward to see what you cover next.
I'm kinda pissed that Penders caused a character purge which then drew the attention of Sega of Japan who caused the removal of the Freedom Fighters from the comics as well. Then the setting was far more nerfed compared to the Archie comics. And Sonic became a celibate man child with his character progression thrown out the window.

view lanolin's character as a close cap off to the resistance as a leader not being burdened with other duties or game character(or not making sense like knuckles/like for amy it fit with her game version wanting to show her dependence.:3). since i agree with the team about the freedom fighters being redundant(which the archie comics till near the genesis wave had a huge problem with as the game characters were constantly fighting for screentime with the ff making it cluttered for some, though would be down for some of them returning.) as sally is 80's-90's cartoon leaders like leonardo or lio-no that i don't feel she's a grand high stand to constantly compare to(plus compared to sonic mostly being a in hindsight a creepy jerk to sally like sonic's snarky but does get humbled to ease up.).

I'm hoping that rings being introduced to the IDW series will actually be a big deal. Seems like a neat way to introduce them, rather than them just being a fact of life already, they have an entire story arc about them.
as much as i like hearing your thoughts on these issues, I feel like you show enough panels and dialogue to where many use these as alternatives to buying the comics themselves. For future videos, maybe it would be better if they leaned more into the analysis side of things rather than the full on story summaries
I did actually have those worries myself many times while making these videos, but I've had honest conversations with comic creators, some over at IDW specifically. They've been incredibly supportive of the format. Sometimes it turns people on to the comics, sometimes those people were never going to buy the book anyway. Either way, I still hold off where I can, and generally wait for the books to be out for a while, but at the end of the day I'm not an IDW employee and I'm not going to approach the videos like I am. I apologize if that sounds defensive! Just wanted to share my thought process on that particular topic. As it is, sometimes I do character analysis, sometimes its more story summary, reaction, review etc. Sometimes its both just depending on what's available to cover and analyze. In this case, Lanolin has only just started but it immediately sparked debate and conversation, and I wanted to share mine based on these two issues. I generally don't do deep character analysis unless there's a bigger body of work, and if Lanolin gets more evolution from here, she will likely had a more focused video down the road as well.

(Hopefully this answered your question.
I KNOW RIGHT?!! I thought the exact same thing when I saw it! It's like her own version of a spindash
I would love to see these new characters pop up in the games sometime!
Tangle has learned a new move!
*Tangle Roll!*
Imagine swinging and jumping around. That would be fun
As someone who does have their gripes with the Sally comparisons fans make, I do understand that it comes from
a place of longing for characters that older fans have had a lot of time to attach themselves to, and not necessarily from a place of snobbish nitpicking that other fan bases would be more inclined towards.
I got into sonic because of Unleash and sonic heroes, I always heard of Sally but the Satam cartoon never aired in my country while I was growing up nor did the local comic book in my town sell the Archie comics, everything I knew about Sally and the freedom fighters was told to me by TH-cam I occasionally came across (heck I thought scourge was a fan made character because the idea of a evil sonic that was green and used sunglasses with a leather jacket just sounded... fan made at the time)
I like IDW Sonic, a lot of people do but this constant comparison with Archie just isn't nice, the IDW comics are canon now and that's the reality older fans of the comic have to accept. I saw some toxic behavior from Archie fans (one in particular just felt biased and hateful of the official canon) but while I can't fully blame them for acting this way, I also can't defend them for this unhealthy gatekeeping
@@mateushenriquepinheiro3197 same, I only read the post genesis wave Archie comics, I wasn’t really attached to Sally as much as the other characters (hell even Scourge rubbed off on me, all things considered)
But oftentimes the sonic fandom tends to be very particular about what they want and yet also not know what they want either. To the point where it feels like fans don’t actually want new Sonic games, shows, etc.
I try to give people the benefit of the doubt and assume they just want to have more of the characters they really like, which is something I can understand and sympathize with. But it’s also kind of annoying how much it happens 😅

Yeah, right? Any attempt to put them in universe has always felt weird to me, outside of maybe the movie cannon, but that's adapting an entirely different kind of ring
That explains all the suggestive fanart.
Beep that sheep damn it.

I love how Tangle is drawn here.
@@videogollumer ✌️🙂
There's little to no dignity in sacrifice IMO. It's far more honorable to live for a cause than to die for one.
@@videogollumer ✌️🙂
I was just saying that sacrifice is (to some degree) tragic & only done out of necessity, it's not supposed to be Plan A. Which is why I agree that Lanolin should deal with her mistakes instead of sacrificing herself for them.
@@brandonprater4613 I never SAID it should be a Plan A! I'm just saying it would be too good for her! She'd get positive recognition for that! She needs to feel HORRIBLE for the horrible things she's done! She needs to feel so horrible that she wants to resign! It doesn't matter whether or not she goes through with it, but it's a display of sincere regret for something horrible that she NEEDS to show. She hurt her friends for no good reason. Is there anything worse a Sonic Hero specifically can do than mistreat a friend?
Maggie being paired with Lanolin is definitely a nice touch. This wisp obviously is influenced by sound, maybe the wispon cowbell can create different frequencies to make different effects.

I remember lanolin being an earlier character because I got a shirt from a friend that had one of the sonic IDW covers on it and I was like. Who are these people
Sally is a leader, Lanolin is a quatermaster. Sally is Lawful Good and Lanolin is Lawful Neutral
The whole “growing city” thing reminds me of Mechagodzilla city from the Godzilla anime trilogy.
@GameApologist The device at 6:50 appears to be the Dreamcast VMU, it's kind of a neat little detail they put in as an easter egg.
never though about it (since the feats don't compare) but Lanolin being put in Sally's role can be pretty good
Mainly freeing Amy from that (she REALLY didn't fit being the leader for what they showed in the games) but also because a character that could keep up with Sonic AND slow him down (not with romance) is needed; 06 Shadow is pratically dead so yeah ... he is out of question

I wonder if that's connected to Sonic Frontiers in some kind of way.
The analysis is my favorite part of speed reading, cause I’ve never watched an IDW one before reading them. Analyzing is the new stuff for me.
Eggman probably made these Chaos crystals due to the Chaos Emeralds scattering(again) after the Metal Virus ark, and between Rouge collecting them and the Doc's other projects he hasn't had time to track the real ones down himself.
It would be a waste to let a well designed character like Lanolin be just a nameless bystander

All jokes aside, I wish people would stop doing these comparisons or at least explained them better.

Lani is easily my favorite best girl, shes just so cute and i want to hug her lol
I've seen her in the background of these comics alot and always loved her design. Glad she has the spotlight.
as much as i like hearing your thoughts on these issues, I feel like you show enough panels and dialogue to where many use these as alternatives to buying the comics themselves.
I can imagine the prowler meme going along with whisper 5:06
That device the hover wisp takes up high is DEFINITELY designed after the Dreamcast VMUs. Its DEFINITELY not exact. But the inspiration is there, what with the port above the screen.

Great video Nick! Always enjoy my dive further into the ongoing IDW narrative 😊
Lanolin was a character in the IDW Sonic series during their Zombot pandemic. I don't think she's a Sally...but she could be pared similarly to her.
The reason why we haven't seen Rings in IDW Sonic is because SEGA has forbade them from using the Rings in a narrative sense.
Judging by one of the mandates, I'm not even sure there's a form of currency, which is weird since the Chaotix are always taking detective jobs for "money".
It's good to see Lanolin join the cast officially and I'm looking forward to see how she leads the Diamond Cutters going forward.
