This video shows how to build a homemade go kart axle, also known as a dead axle go kart. It also shows plans to build a live axle go kart and compares the pros and cons of live axle vs dead axle.
The instructions I have on my website for free plans include the dead axle, one wheel drive go kart. I also have $20 go kart plans that are for a live axle go kart kit on the plans page.
There are two main types of go kart live axle kits:
1) converting a go kart to live axle
2) building a live axle go kart from scratch, which includes all the live axle go kart parts as well as the tires, wheels, steering, brakes, throttle, seat etc.

Hi just what I'm looking for I have a smoker that I need to build a cart for because I very heavy and I'm living it to a concrete only I need something with bigger wheels so I would like to make a wagon style cart to set my smoker on so I can pull it around the yard can you help me out with the axles

I think the title is wrong. He talks about the live axle briefly, but showed how to make the one wheel drive dead axle.. Maybe he planned on showing how to make both.

I have purchased the live axle plans and am working on the deluxe-upgrade version. However in the plans it is not clear how it is assembled, what is welded and where, and where it is even attached to the frame. This video said it would cover the live axle but it did not. Do you have a video that covers this or anything that would go into more depth on how this is assembled?

What type of metal (stainless, zinc plated, galvanized, grade 8 steel, etc) is used for the bolts that make the axle? If it's being welded to plain steel, does it also have to be just plain steel?
Bolts can be grade 5 or grade 8
if i have a 500CC Snowmobile motor im gonna use will i still need a torque converter
snowmobiles usually have their own style of torque converters.
Typically, you would see a comet 94C or 'duster' drive unit with a
similiarly named driven unit. These were meant for the high rpms of a 2
stroke engine.
I'd be going mental doing all that work and then not doing a live axle! One wheel peels are definitely simple and have a place in the Karting world but once you drive a live axle kart its all over. Its more money but makes more sense. Then again, so does centering the motor over the rear end 🤔.
Anyone else have trouble finding dead axle kits? I want dead axle, but with 2 motors (independent of each other).

Also what size bolts (other than 4 and 6 inches) did you use for your custom axle? Like what's the thickness? Head size? And metal type? :D

Yes but it would be hard to steer and requires jackshaft.

hi, I have a question. I have a dead axle go kart. right now I'm looking to replace the drive wheel but am stuck. my cart uses 3/4 bore sprocket. I can't find a wheel online with a sprocket attached with a 3/4 bore. this may be noob question... but is there a way to attach a sprocket to a rim. my current wheel being replaced has the sprocket welded. so I can't replace the sprocket that's attached to it. so I have to get another rim that will fit the 3/4 axle and have a sprocket.
+Austin Geary yeah, there are 1 3/8" OD bearings that have a 3/4" ID sprocket is attached to drive wheel via flange/bolts, usually with a brake drum too.
how do I jump start a live axle kart I buyer a kart 2 days a go and it won't start on ground coz when I pull the pull start both the wheels move on floor and carnt pull it proper and when I lift bk end up and start it when I put it on floor it cuts out strate away any idea
no idea, its called "bump starting" and you can see on wiki how.

no, a live axle is the exact opposite. What you are wanting is a differential.

Is it not bad to weld a bolt? They have coatings on them that vaporize when you weld and I'm not sure grinding it really removes it all.
No it’s not bad. The coating is zinc and even if you didn’t remove it there isn’t enough of it there to have a measurable response to the exposure. You don’t get metal fume fever from welding two bolts.

Another question - I'm planning on using an 1800w motor for mine, and it has a T8F sprocket. ok so I just got a live axle go kart but I have no tires except for the ones off of my other go kart which is dead axle. I was wondering if the wheels would still function. basically my question is could you take the wheels off of a dead axle and put them on a live axle?

Unfortunately, no. Have you tried looking on Craigslist and eBay for a used one? That's probably your best bet.
+KartFab yeah I have an they r still really expensive and hard to find.
Just have to be patient. I was able to buy a dingo for $100, $250, $80, and $80 (keep in mind that this is searching frequently for go kart and they were in bad bad shape, had to spend a lot of $ and effort to get them running and driving)

or just add two engines and rig it up to where to throttle is equal on both wheels so you'd technically have more power

I can't weld but I need an axle like this but I'm putting an engine on a skateboard and will only need one wheel, the other problem is even if I could weld the base of it all is made of wood, basically, how do I attach a very short dead axle to a wooden board
yeah, you will need to weld some gussets to a plate and bolt the plate through the wood.
where did u get the bolt from. can't find them eny where. is the axle u use there 1 inch??
Its in the plans in the description. I got it from a hardware store (tractor supply). Any place that sells hardware should sell bolts like this (in the US at least).
How do you know what size axle to get? I see some kits have different lengths of axles ?
Between 36 and 44” is about where I have seen them. 36 for narrow 1 seat go karts and 44” for two seaters.

I would have ground the head of that bolt enough to slide in the tube. Plug weld inside and bead outside, much stronger.

Lol just use a straight rod with two bearings and a welded sprocket on the rod any how how much is Steel at steel places is it cheaper than buying at lowes?
+LOLitzDanny if you use a "straight rod" it will likely bend. You should never weld an axle. Steel at a metal distributed is many times cheaper than lowes.

You buy a FNR gearbox and run the clutch to the gearbox and figure out shift linkages.

Axle hangars are because pillow blocks are usually bolted through tubing, compromising its integrity.

I just bought a live axle kit from GPS and the extra flustered me a bit. Have you played around with they're predator 212 engine mounts?
The “extra” is for different types of hub mounts so it’s compatible with mounting more things to the axle. I’ve used the predator mount on the mini bike you see in this video. I’ve also used their bigger motor mount for Honda gx390/predator 420 engines. Good mounts to weld onto frames because they have that lip on them so they don’t flex like a flat plate.

+Jonathan Torres the hub is part of the drive wheel, it is the rim. So the drive wheel assembly contains the rim/hub, brake, tire and sprocket.

+creative channel yes but generators usually have a tapered shaft. You may need to double check and other an adapter for the shaft.

Won't there be a steering differential with a one wheel drive?
A tiny bit of torque steer, but you are dealing with a little go kart engine here, not a car engine so its barely noticeable.

Does it matter if the metal is 2" by 2" rather than 1"by 1"
+InTense Snpr1 the axle material needs to be 1"x 1" in order for the bolt to be welded to it safely. If you were to use 2"x 2" material for the go kart axle, you would probably need to add a section of steel plate to to the ends and weld the bolt to that steel plate. If you have enough fabrication know how, you can make most things work.
Think of it this way, buy a piece of 1"x1" steel for at most $2/foot and you are going to spend about $6 max with no headaches, or you can try the 2"x2" and see how it works.

Curious why you dont just tack it with your welding squares in place
The welding squares are magnetic and it actually messes with the arc when you weld. You often times get really weird things happening when you expose the welding arc to a magnetic field.

Can I use a live axle with the free plans?
+Jordan Avendano they have the standard live axle kit instead of the free plans kit, which is almost identical to the free plans (brakes are set up differently, brake rod, and live axle weldment is set up differently, engine mounting is centered with a special piece of steel bar) So........other than that, they are virtually identical. If you got the deluxe live axle kit, you would be in hot water and need to buy my live axle plans to follow it. the standard live axle plans come with my deluxe live axle plans. Its up to you if you want to go without the plans, I just offer support for those that bought plans, not those that did not.
+KartFab oh well I'm just a high school kid with a budget so I had to choose the free plans, but I appreciate the input, oh and your videos are really helpful I've been working with my teacher in my welding class to make this go kart I just hope it turns out well. Once again thanks for the info

+brandonfix engine turns clutch, clutch turns chain, chain turns drive wheel sprocket, drive wheel sprocket turns drive wheel assembly. Drive wheel assembly has two bearings on it that ride on the longer bolt.
