Four years ago, they shocked us all. Expected to merely make up the numbers, in 2019 Uruguay instead gave us one of the Rugby World Cup's greatest upsets, and made us all so proud of their country. And now, they're looking to go one better. With the World Cup just months away, what are Uruguay building, how have they developed since Japan, and could they shock us all again this November?

Uruguay having teros as their emblem mascot is great. Probably the only rugby national teams whose emblem are literally born on the rugby fields they play.
Aa a Brazilian living in France (specifically from the southernmost state, Rio Grande do Sul) I love seeing your content and enthusiasm with Uruguay. I hope that they can break some paradigms this world cup and hopefully we can see great results from the three Latin American powers at the WC in France. On top of that, Uruguay rugby was always my inspiration, so they will always be close to my heart

Just watched the Uruguay sevens today in Singapore, and they were fantastic, defeating Kenya and even group favourites USA. Obviously not the same group of players in 15s, but it really seems it is growing over there similar to Argentina a while back. Excited for the future!

Its so out of fashion for you but a squidge video on the most recent dallas jackals game (first win in franchise history) would be the most amazing thing to ever happen. Its got some fantastic clips including crying coaches
Decided to cheer for Uruguay as the underdogs at the 2015 RWC and my housemate picked tighthead prop Mario Sagario as his new favourite player.
On a whim, I emailed the URU asking for a contact for Mario to see if he’d record a birthday message for my housemate. He got back to me very quickly and said he’d be delighted do the video but had some important stuff going on so it might take a few days.
Turns out he was in the process of signing a short term deal with Munster. Even in the middle of the biggest move of his career to date, he took the time to record a very lovely and funny video for my housemate… who is a Munster fan from Limerick!
Have loved Uruguayan rugby ever since.

Superb review of uruguayan international rugby. I am argentinian, and I love Uruguay in many ways. It may be true that argentine coaches helped to develope their game, as in Chile, so far, but I am not surprised at Uruguayan talent, and least at the determination. They never surrender! Not so long ago, any of their teams would be beaten quite easily by a good argentine side, be it club level or international. Nowadays, they regularly beat argentine and chilean sides, or make it very hard to be beaten. I will not pretend to not say Argentina has a lot to do with this progress, but since the talent exists, if better coached, if getting more often exposed to quality competitors, no one should be surpised. And Squidge, smart observer, spotted this. Having said this, I must say that to advance to a higher level could demand many years. It is a road to follow, and to remain true to.

Not as flashy? If you mean the way they play, they play some of the best attacking running rugby of any international side. If you mean as a team to talk about, they’re higher than Uruguay in the rankings, have a bigger population, have more chances to integrate with European rugby in tournaments and culture etc etc I would argue Portugal are on of the flashiest tier 2 teams to talk about right now if not the most

Would love to see the US and rugby Americas start a champions cup style competition. It would benefit all these emerging nations!!
World Rugby should be encouraging all the emerging nations in the America's, Europe and Asia in the direction. Something similar to Super Rugby perhaps, with franchises built on regional amalgamations would probably provide the greatest quality increase.
MLR and SRA merging together at the end of their respective seasons is a must, it makes things more interesting

@@fumie4996 Well I think that is a cheap shot without much investigation. Crowley was still learning about the players, and also his Achilles heel of his love of Brex. If he had played the team that thrashed Romania the would not have been the result. (The centres being Zanon and Menoncello). He shoe horned in Brex pushing Menoncello to the wing where he was clearly exposed.
