I am in Florida and decided to begin Cosmos from seed in pots. When they got about 12 inches tall after pinching I decided to put them into the ground. Meanwhile a couple days later I noticed two of the 6 plants were cut off by 8 inches, decapitated and leafless. Next thing you know all of them day after day were victim to the same thing. Chopped off and only a stem 5 inches remains. What do you think could have done this and do you think they will grow back?
thank you ! never knew you could clip them back. mine self seed in zone 5b. I, usually spend two weeks digging seedlings out of my lawn and transplanting them back into the flower bed...one year close to a hundred !
We often deadhead some of ours to prevent so much self seeding, however, at least they are easy to pull out if not wanted. The pinching back makes a much bushier plant.
I planted 3 seedlings on my lemon plant and they are doing great so I'll wait a bit longer and then transplant them on the patio, hopefully, they'll do well!
It is the warm soil temperature that is the key around 25C (77F) So germinating them indoors or with some heat is needed in cooler climates.... Good luck and let us know how it goes.....
Thank you for the video, I plant cosmos every year and I absolutely love them, They have such beautiful flowers! Last year I collected so many seeds that I have thousands of them now! Happy growing 💚🌱 Oh yeah! Did you get a chance to upload the video of the elephant bush?
I grew cosmos for the first time this year. Put the seeds in the ground later April. Now I have these massive cosmos bushes. Still haven't had any flowers come out and don't even see signs of buds.
The three main reasons that Cosmos do not flower are: Lack of sun, they need lots of sun to set buds. Over fertilising. Too much fertiliser leads to lots of foliage and no buds. Cosmos like a poor soil. Over watering. They need good drainage and not a lot os water. Hope these hints are a help.
@@johnnyAGardening thank you. They’re in full sun so it may be the compost or my watering habits in the heat wave. I started reducing watering on them about a month ago.
I have orvala at the back of the border which gets big and flowers from Early April to May then I chop it to the ground and plant cosmos around it to fill the gap.
Orvala ? Do you have another name for that or is it Lamium orvala? Whatever you are growing sound like an interesting solution and we would like to follow that one up.
I removed the spent blooms while they were green and dried them in a bowl. Lots of dark seeds fell out after they dried. Do you think those seeds are still viable even though they didn't mature and dry on the plant?
Yes seedlings require thinning. The general rule is to plant them at 12 inches (30cm) apart. As you prune them early on they branch out/ We sometimes plant the small growing ones closer, in good soil usually 8 inches (20 cm)
@@johnnyAGardening 12 degrees Celsius can bear it! @@alya4064 Hello Ayla, so 25 C in the daytime, down to 10 at night. It that is correct you should have little trouble. These are from Mexico and grow well in the summer, and its fairly hot in Mexican summers. Good soil, a little extra water and it's certainly worth trying them. Would be interested in hearing how it works out.
@@johnnyAGardening Thank you very much, but is there any advice you can give me for faster germination of cosmos seeds?! Today I placed the seeds and covered them with a net in the semi-shade area, so that the seeds do not dry out and covered with a very light layer of soil!
@@alya4064 Only to keep them warm. So let the water you use warm up a little in the watering can or bottle before you water them. Maybe cover the container with some sort of cloche to raise the temperature
Im trying to grow the chocolate cosmos from seed and also purity, and one called cupcake. The seeds wont sprout! Im so upset! Only 5 seeds came this time for the chocolate! I accidentally weeded out my chocolate cosmos this yr now trying to grow it back! Other seeds pop right up just having no success with these 3. I felt like they dont like heat mats? So now trying with just grow lights and no humidity dome?
Chocolate Cosmos (cosmos atrosanguineus) seeds are generally sterile, propagation is by division or other vegetative methods. Purity and others should be OK and yes lower the humidity, just a little moisture.
Another tip: you can root the cosmo cuttings. They root easily in water or just stick them back in the dirt. Love them🌼

Hello Ellie, appreciate the comment. Pruning back to create a bushy plant is perhaps the best tip of them all.... and this applies to many plants.

Usually we would say no, however we would try them anyway as the seeds were dark, they may be OK. Would love to know if they germinate.....
I planted the yellow ones a long time ago and they take over my whole garden by dropping seeds everywhere.
Yes, you do need to deadhead to prevent self seeding. We do, and leave some seed heads and collect the seeds for the next season.
Do they seedlings require thinning? How far apart do you plant the transplanted ones? Thanks!

after plant have to wait how long. until the flower bloom?
Depends on climate usually 3 months, plant in spring, flower in summer.
Great video ! いいね!
Are open pollinated cosmo true to type or do they hybridise when crossed with other varieties?
Generally speaking NO, however sometimes they do. We are trying some seeds collected this year, from this video. SO MAY do a report video on that.
Could I plant cosmos inside my home? I don’t have an house and lives in an apartment where I don’t have a garden or yard?
Very difficult to grow unless they get full sun, so maybe on a balcony.
Hi, what are the appropriate degrees for germination?! Does it withstand moderate weather, meaning when it reaches 12 degrees Celsius?!
Hello Alya around 18 - 20C for germination. Do you mean 12C as a minimum ? Best over 16C below 13 C will inhibit growth..

Do they do well in vases?
Yes, pick them when the buds are just about to pop open. Should last 5 - 7 days.
In what kind of soil should I plant ?
We grow ours in the garden, just well drained reasonably fertile soil. We also add a thin layer of mulch.
