    At 53 I just found the joy in house plants and growing flowers! It takes patience and grace and I think sometimes that comes with age.
    I so enjoyed this video! You made me smile and I have done that in awhile.
    Thank you, God bless.

      That's so lovely to hear, thank you 😊. There's just something about plants and growing that takes you to another realm and we love it for that as well as the beauty. I don't know where I would be with the garden and nurturing plants. It's therapy for the soul. Thanks again 🙏

    Zip lock plastic bags are great for putting plant pots in for cuttings.

      You're right, we prefer to use the zip bags too but don't always have them as we use loads for work lunches etc. We try and re-cycle the clean ones for the cuttings though 👍

    My Cosmos were leggy too this year. I've still got loads to plant (even though I've given a lot away) as I always sow too many. The birds seem to like the young shoots (they destroyed lots last year) and I've found some of my plants have been completely ripped out of their pots this year. I really like the dwarf Sonata variety but also grow the tall Sensation and Purity . Cracking little plants that always do well. Paul, I know what you mean about being in the garden early in the morning with just the birds. It's so peaceful when none of the neighbours are up. Hope you and Andrew are both okay. xxx

    • @MadAboutGardening
      @MadAboutGardening  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the same for us but with tomatoes this year, we'll have enough to feed the whole avenue! We really need to be more restrained next year. That's a shame you've lost some of your cosmos. You never know what the creatures and animals will take a fancy to. It was such a pleasure getting out early in the morning as we find filming difficult with so much background noise later in the day. We love this time of year. We're both well and Andrew is currently enjoying a week off from work due to half term. He's recently began working as a primary school teaching assistant and loves it. I think he's finally found his calling. Take care Wendy xxx

      @@MadAboutGardening Yes, too many tomatoes for me as well. So tempting when sowing to just add more in case the first ones don't germinate! Glad that Andrew's loving his new job and the wonderful thing is all those school holidays. Just think, six weeks off in the summer. Mind you, everyone deserves it as children can be very tiring and hard work. I admire anyone who can hack doing a job like that. Take care. xxx

    Thank you, Paul! I followed along with you today as I planted up my cosmos seedlings. I have to confess I was nervous about nipping out the tops! But, I know your advice is excellent. Should I nip out the tops on a steady basis? Now, a good feed and watch them grow and flower! Wishing you the best week!

      That's great the video was perfect timing for you so you could follow along. Once the growing tip is initially nipped out, there's no need to do it again. Just deadhead the spent flowers as you would normally. Have a great week too.

    Thank you, this is the first video of yours that I have come across. I am growing Cosmos for the first time this year and and my seedlings have popped up after 2 days so I am ecstatic! I could see some white hairs at the base of some of the stems which I am thinking is the exposed root so I have covered the hairs up and now is the waiting game to see if they will be ok but they look healthy other than that. I am now a subsciber :)

    Wonderful video. I have a Cosmos in a pot. He seemed to be doing good, but then flowers all faded and dropped. So I moved it to a sunnier location. Flowers with vibrant color just exploded. Then again, the faded, shriveled and now the plant looks like it's on its last leg. Do Cosmos like to be watered often? A lot? Or a little? I keep trying different things, which brings the plant back, but then dies again. Thx for sharing your knowledge. I didn't know abt snipping them back. I am going to do that today. Cheers!

      @MadAboutGardening  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Cosmos need frequent watering and as much sun as possible. They don't like to be waterlogged though so good drainage is needed wherever you plant them. Thanks for your kind comments, they are much appreciated! Happy gardening 👍

    Hi there, my Cosmos which I have planted direct into the ground are doing really well and look fab. Unfortunately I have about 4 which are lovely green and lush but not producing flowers. Is there anything I can do to get them to flower? I have trimmed them back but to no avail. Were they just mutant seeds? Any advice greatly received cheers

    • @MadAboutGardening
      @MadAboutGardening  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They just might be a bit slower than the rest for some reason or growing in ground where there is a lot of nitrogen, which promotes foliage. I would try giving them a feed with a high potash fertiliser, something like tomato feed, and see if that helps to get them to flower. Hope this helps.

      Some of the taller varieties may need staking. The ones we grew last year did need to be supported. We did this just using garden canes and twine.

    Is it safe to plant cosmos seeds after there is no frost, but the night temps are still reaching 45 degrees F?

    • @MadAboutGardening
      @MadAboutGardening  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So long as the risk of frost has passed they will be okay but harden them off first for a least a week before planting out. Hope this helps.

      @@MadAboutGardening what is harden them out mean?

    • @MadAboutGardening
      @MadAboutGardening  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's a term used for getting the plants acclimatised to outdoors when they have been growing indoors. You just need to put them outside during the day and bring them back in at night. It helps prepare the plants for the change in temperature and prevents them getting shocked.

  • @michelleminer2190
    @michelleminer2190 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Do you have to have a certain amount of leaves above the first set to do this? Mine are smaller than the ones you grew but I made the mistake of putting too much fertilizer in the soil I think. They are small, stopped growing and never got real bushy or flowered. I also have them in a pot with other plants so I'm scared to try and move them. I feel it would likely traumatize them though being smaller?

    • @MadAboutGardening
      @MadAboutGardening  หลายเดือนก่อน

      We pinch out the tips when there are two or three sets of leaves. We grow all of ours in pots but we feed with a high potassium fertiliser fortnightly to encourage more flowers. So long as they are not overcrowded by the other plants I would leave them where they are. Try a tomato feed to give them a push to flower better. Hope this helps.
